  1. Ever had one member that was just a cancer on your corps? You know the one person that came along, drove everyone nuts, brought morale down, ###### people off, and would not go away? How did you or your organization deal with it? I mean I know you have to learn to accept different personalities, different ways of thinking, and different lifestyles especially when you are in an All Age corps, but I am talking about individuals who actually began to affect the corps in a very negative way.Do you excise the tumor or do you try to shrink it until it goes away?

Hell yeah!!!!!! We had one but the "powers that be" booted him and then brought him back because members were needed.

  2. Blah, Blah, Blah ... this is just for fun ... usual disclaimers.

(Parenthetical summaries for the shows I've seen).

    1. Reading Buccaneers

    2. Minnesota Brass, Inc. (Depending on how their guard performs, MBI should see an increase in vis. performance/GE. The musical ensemble is top 3 for sure.)

    3. Connecticut Hurricanes

    4. Hawthorne Caballeros

    5. Empire Statesmen

    6. San Francisco Renegades

    7. Bushwackers

    8. Brigadiers

    9. Alliance

    10. Kilties (Good musical program, improved visual: How 'bout this year, guys?)

    -------------------------------

    11. CorpsVets

    12. Music City Legend

    13. Rochester Crusaders

    1. Govenaires (Plenty of room to grow. Surprised by the SSP/St. Pete scores, but can still see them winning.)

    2. Kingston Grenadiers (Saw a YouTube standstill performance. Top drums for sure.)

    3. Fusion Core

    4. Carolina Gold

    -------------------------------

    5. Vigilantes (After seeing their crowd-friendly show last weekend, they could be clean enough, and have the necessary GE, to make it into finals.)

    6. Sun Devils

    7. White Sabers

    8. Sunrisers

    9. Lakeshoremen (There's lots of musical demand, as well as plenty of good musicians ... just no battery.)

    10. Excelsior

    11. Shenandoah Sound

I see Corps Vets taking 10th.

  3. Govies, have always enjoyed this Corps. They aren't afraid of taking songs like "Hot for teacher"and putting it out on the field.

That being said, I don't know if it was the chart or whatever, it seemed to me that hornline struggled a bit with Hot for teacher, and it seemed kind of muddled.

Guard as always with the Govies doing big time work.

Drums, sorry but I'm not a drum guy so I really can't comment.

Overall a very enjoyable show. A show that could once again get them into the Big Dance.

    Kilties

As with Bob I am biased, being part of the Corps for many years.

It was my first viewing of the Kilties this year.

I was a bit afraid of all the hype about the corps, I had been hearing.

Are they that good? Am I gonna be dissapointed,Wowed,or what?

From the moment they stepped on to the field with the strains of Syne I knew It was WOW time for me.

One fact that has been haunting the Kilties for years is that they can't march well while playing.

Well folks I am here to tell you,It's true no longer.

This corps marches as well as they big guys.

The hornline sounded everybit as good as Brass tonight.

18 in the guard and as Bob stated I am a bit confused as to why they got dumped on.

Oh well I'm a horn guy.

Drums smaller and a lot younger line this year but they play a good book. And they move around a bunch, fast and more faster..

This years show is timing changes and a lot of them thoughout.

The corps has 2 more show's and another week of practice to tighten things up.

    Sidenote:

Mr. Ream: this year, watch and listen for all the timing changes.

Get that hot dog out of your mouth and put down the beer and really watch them.HEH...

Brass Exellant show, more movement than I have seen them do in awhile. That is with the exception of Mr. Grupp.Man if I had his drill I'd never retire. But I'm sure he's tired of hearing that one.

He's One of the all time Great horn players in the history of Drum Corps

1st time read-it looks great, looks big and it is definately preformed to generate a monster at Finals.

    They can only get better.

    Go get em Brass!!!

I almost forgot to add that The Kilties proved that with great promotion a show with only three Corps can be sold out.

They brought in other enjoyable acts and made it work.

They made a True Family Night.

ALL FOR ONLY $10.00, with the little ones getting in for free

I was at the show. The Kilties played good but to compare them with MBI......maybe. The guard was somewhat weak. Some of the members have difficulty with equipment and I believe one member fell. Just my opinion. Govies were a gas to watch. MBI- WOW!!!!!!!!!

  4. They are, indeed, amazing Keith!! Great stuff!! It's all about entertaining for South Shore. They are slated for about a 20 minute full metal to the pedal fan-pleasing performance routine.

Prairie Brass Band is really terrific as well. They are a 35 piece brass band leaning to the British brass band style; cool stuff!

It's going to be a fun evening!! It's unfolding to look like a 2 1/2 to 3 hour event; with familes and kids.....it will be a nice variety everyone attending can enjoy and not too long of a event so any younger kids don't get restless.

The Kilties are going to open the evening (after the SSB) with a stand-still concert of parade tunes and actual concert pieces, followed by Prairie Brass Band, then South Shore, intermission; then into the DCA field show performances by Brass, Govies and The Kilties. The evening will close with a encore performance by The Kilties. All this plus strolling pipers, some I & E.....going to be a nice evening. (annual "Kiltiepalooza" after the show!! )

Any indoor arrangements if it rains?

  5. I don't think the present can be considered a "Golden Age" particularly when:

-- every year sees the loss of yet another corps

-- the competitive season grows shorter

-- the number of shows continues to decline

-- we move farther and farther from the traditions of the activity

Certainly, to those currently on the field and to most younger fans, there's no time like the present. But, when viewed from a broader historical perspective I would not consider this a "Golden Age."

    Very well put,Chicago Fan

  6. Mike,

Apparently you are a little too far behind the times and outside the activity to understand the nature of performing and the personal (varying) reasons members of any corps have for performing and/or being a part of any specific organization; and that's fine. It is a total misplacement of energy to concern oneself about rank and placement over the defining factors of simply working hard, being dedicated, giving the very best you have all the time. I'm confident The Kilties will continue on another 75 years without your blessings and insights.

I marched for about 25 years and I know the nature of "performing and the personal(varying) reasons members of any corps have for performing...". My opinion is not slighting the Kilties All Age Corps. Just my opinion. Don't get defensive. Also if I came across curt, I apologize.

    Mike

  7. I think it's in everyone's best interest to sever this tangent right now. A random person making a random comment about their OWN PERSONAL OPINION is no excuse to bash or otherwise tear down any corps. Let's get this back on track, 2009 Rankings.

    Thanks.

Trash talking is part of drumcorps. I have been involved in this activity well over 40 years as a marching member,a parent of two kids who marched, and as a volunteer. Trash talking hasn't made me PC and I sleep well at night. It is what it is.

    Mike

    Looking forward to DCA weekend.

  8. "QUOTE (dci72 @ Jun 30 2009, 01:18 AM)

"That's news to me. Yes, we did have two performances this evening with the marching band show as a exhibition but not the Madison show last we heard; as told we were to be on DCA sheets.

Either way, The Kilties love to perform, and if the fans liked it......that's all good stuff; they pay for the tickets.

The fans were GREAT at both events this evening, and the corps had a GREAT time performing for them.

Personally, I'll take 4 to 5 spontaneous thunderous "standing O's" over any score. If one works hard, is dedicated, and focuses on doing the very best possible as individuals and a performing ensemble........good things tend to happen on their own."

The quote above was from Bill Roetzer,Racine Kilties. I was just using his post for the Kilties DCA status."

"I don't know what point you may be seeking to make, but as I mentioned, personally, if one works hard, is dedicated and focuses on doing the very best possible, etc...good things tend to happen on their own. That's just a formula for living life."

    bill

So if performing for the fans gets you pumped up,why compete for a score? Go the exhibition route or become an Alumni corps. Just sayin'

    Mike

  9. Looking at the posted DCA schedule, I don't see MBI competing against ANYONE until 2 weeks before the championship! And even then they are likely not competing against any of the eventual top 10 corps. Perhaps they should just form their own circuit, cause ain't no way they will EVER win with that schedule.

Got second place in 08. Maybe some of the NE corps should travel to the Midwest.

    Just sayin'

  10. Correct. There will be at least three central shows in August. Racine on 8-15, St. Paul on 8-22, St Peter on 8-23, and The Kilties are working to potentially bring yet another Central show to mid Wisconsin on August 16th.

    All will be fine.

Rumor has it that the July 25 show, scheduled in Wausau and/or Merill has been canceled.

  11. The Kilties are going to be fine.

There are three more positions still needed to filled with qualified applicants (one soprano, one mello, and one color guard with weapons experience) and then the corps is full; so if you know of anyone...spread the word and have them apply.

We have some new and returning members getting caught up to speed and by the time the corps hits full pace into the DCA portion of the summer schedule things should be all settled in nicely. Just as example, we are awaiting arrival of a new tenor drummer from Japan to be fitted into the battery yet.

If anyone thinks Scott Stewart is not going to strictly demand the performance best out of the membership as a whole and each member, you're on another planet.

All the best to all corps in the activity.

Nothing personal, bill but it seems that the Kilts moved two step backwards and one step forward each year.

    Just sayin'

Sparta's pretty easy to get to from KC...North on 35 to I-90 at Albert Lea, east on 90 through "The Holy Land" and Sparta's just east of La Crosse.

Verona is just SW of Madison along US 151..So going there from Sparta might be about 1/3 of the return trip to KC..

    Pat

Sounds doable for me. My sister is planning to go.

  14. I'm not sure which is funnier..........people making predictions in January or the people that get their panties in a bunch as if its gospel they speak..........

I will be in Rome, Italy over Labor Day this coming year - I predict I'll be drinking very good Vino and eating some awesome Pasta - take THAT to the bank!

Kay: I am 100 percent Italian and I am jealous.:tongue::tongue:

Guess people are passionate about the activity.

  15. If I have my facts straight, Kilties were DCI, they went inactive for awhile, turned Alumni, then went competitive.

The Kilts(jr) folded around 1983-1985, reformed as an alumni group in 1992, and went Sr./All age around 1995. But the alumni group formed in 1992 was a one time deal to get intrest in reforming the Kilties as a DCI group. But TPTB wanted to go the competive route. These are facts as given to me by Kiltie alumni.

    SHAMELESS BUMP.....

After the tease that the Staff gave us at the Banquet, I'm looking forward to hearing the repertoire for '09...

Of course, Boss Lady's Pumpkin Bars could entice me to show up...Like I really need them..

    Pat

My bud,Jim Lopez, says that the pumkin bars ARE ENOUGH to die for.

    Good luck in 09
