Um, yeah, OK, like what do you mean intellectual show?
Often “intellectual” shows in drum corps means a show that doesn’t connect with the audience that is then berated as too stupid to understand the corps ‘art’
I don't mean anything by it because they only played the Pre-Show music. Just repeating the comments from Jim Coates when discussing the possible/ likely show concept with the corps....simply reporting the facts.
Time will tell............

Like someone said in an earlier post…there are many things that make a piece difficult.
But on that note here is part of communication I had with Bertrand Moren who is the Composer of the “Dreams” piece Crown did in 2012……………he responded with ”I was absolutely impressed by the very high quality of the players of the Carolina Crown. The brass and percussion sections are absolutely fantastic !!!! We played the piece "Dreams" a lot of times here, and it was already difficult to play it when sitting on a chair in a concert. Carolina Crown play it during making a so great show, so I think it is absolutely fantastic !”.

I've heard a few camp recordings and some inklings as to what their source material will be, and I must say I'm excited for them. The music is very mature and the design team seems to be going for a more intellectual show.
I have been at both camps and Phan89 is correct it will be a very intellectual show. I'm very interested in seeing how this show develops and the growth during the summer. It's going to be an interesting ride.
They had the Pre-Show and into the opening statement at the December camp and it put a HUGE smile on my face!!

From one of the members, thank you! Everything you've said is how it felt on the field too. Obviously I can only speak for myself, but plenty of the other members said the same after the show, after retreat, and at banquet the next morning. It was the performance of a lifetime and a phenomenal way to cap off my drum corps career.
THANK YOU for the "MAGICAL" Finals night

composed something specifically for Crown to play in the future.
my thoughts exactly. Think of the possibilities.
-
When the composer himself thinks you kicked ###, the opinions of judges kind of become irrelevant, don't you think?
there were many who shared the exact feelings.

After spending the past 10 days volunteering with Crown- I just want to say “THANK YOU” to all the admin, staff, volunteers and mostly to the members of the 2012 Carolina Crown. It was a pleasure walking along side of you as I swelled up with immense pride as you took the field nightly. The highlight of my time there was where I got to personally witness something very very special Saturday night that I will never forget as you had a beautiful and moving performance I guess one could call it "Magic". To CrownBaritone, Nick Starr and other 2012 members that visit these forums- again I want to say THANK YOU and I’m so proud of what you did.

After listening to the design team run rehearsal over the past few days, I have to say I'm really glad my kid decided to march at Crown. They've really got their act together! They're ALWAYS teaching (and not just brass, perc, and guard!) but always with mutual respect and admiration. There's a reason those performers would literally do anything for their staff and it's this: the staff will do anything for the performers. All of them (staff and performers, admin and support) truly are super heroes ! For the Common Good is really gonna be something special in Indy !
Well said and agree as I am able to up close and personable.
The greatest feeling is being welcomed by the CMM as an alumni. Very happy days.

i think we should all rock these at finals:
Nice. Could it be at finals? Time will tell.

He is a Charter alumn and brass member. He is guaranteed to punch his "inside the circle" card.
ahhhhhhhhh......you forgot the old, has been and washed up part!!!

Only if you're allowed. ;-)
If not....I can go and cry on Crown's food truck as I'm slinging hash.

Corbin- THANKS for PM-ing me.

I took a three year absence from 15 years of successive drum corps as I had to come to terms with amplification. I returned to my first show, Charlotte, this time with my 8yo daughter. This was her first exposure beyond you-tube and dvd's. As with any generation, first hand experience with a drum corps event such as a show with the magnitude of this line-up can not be over-stated. Caveat: for all you other old-timers like me who have or had difficulty with electrification of drums corps, let me just say that I have missed the activity terribly and Charlotte did not disappoint, at all. I have learned something about myself and about change in itself as it pertains to drum corps and life. This point was driven home to me last night in Charlotte as I watched my daughter's first experience into the world of drum corps. Not to overstate other reviews, and not to oversimplify the tee shirt that I saw last night that said "a bad day in drum corps is better than a great day at work." There was not a weak corps last night, yes each corps show design varied in maturity and execution, but, man were they awesome. I marched in the early 1970's, and what I learned is that these corps and DCI have taken the seeds sown from the past and have grown it into some kind of wonderful. Yep, they are vastly different, but, if you observe the expression of the younger generation as they absorbed what we absorbed in Charlotte, what a show. The old timers laid the seeds of today and now the broader audience base can enjoy it. Amplification, I admit I have hard difficulty, but it was reasonable and appeared it was professional in scope for each corps, and ultimately added value to each show, yes even the amped brass solos. The nuances that once could not be heard delivered layers to the pageantry of drum corps. Now, my daughter. What I saw in her eyes is what I experienced many years ago. She at times had difficulty containing herself, and as she applauded and cheered at the impact points along the way for each corps, she would look to me for reaction. I told her if it moves you let them know. She did. While I won't review each corps, let me jump to SCV. Since she loves drama, the impact of interweaving phantom of the opera into the closer was not lost on her as her face lit up with happiness and appreciation. Cadets. Christmas music, yep in July. This show was electric and the crowd approved en mass. My daughter was so ecstatic with the guard dance and use of props, simple props with exaggerated impact, This show was so well done and exciting. If you have not seen it yet, it is worth the price of admission. The colors. the snowflake, the drill, the music left her giddy with excitement. She ran down to the lower wall after the show wanting to touch the members. Is this not what it is all about? Reminded me of when I marched (poorly) with the Purple Lancer Cadets and was in awe of the "big guys, Auburn Purple Lancers" whenever they were around (for those of you who remember). Money will get you a ticket, but, the corps provide the ride. Seeing drum corps like through her eyes was a piece of heaven for me. Maybe that is what I had forgotten...those fleeting moments that bring such joy. In the end, I had placements correct not scores, not that it mattered, but, yes I had to say. I am still beaming for her, and yes she went to school today excited to tell her friends. Dedication? Maybe, Inspired? Yes. A future corps member, who knows, but I would bet that she will be back Last night I too was inspired and was helped in reminding myself that though I have past the point of no-return the remaining trip can and will be filled by the many spectacles that life has to offer, children, family, yes to me and once again drum corps. Thank you Crown, Blue Devils, SCV, Boston, Phantom Cavies, Bloo and Cadets. Having seen the light, my heart and ears Thank You. Great show!!!
VERY VERY NICE!!!! I have now taken my daughter to her 3rd NightBEAT and I always get asked on the way home when is NB next year? Everything old becomes new again when we take a step back and look at things through a child's eyes.

Can't wait to see them at East!
I tested my new (company issued) iphone for sound and video quality monday....so I'm locked and loaded waiting for my time "In The Circle".
-
Love it. I can't wait to see them in Allentown. This corps is hot and making things exciting.
I stood on the sidelines and WOW
I cannot wait myself to witness personally the final push…I get to go from “slinging verbal barbs” to “slinging hash” as I’m joining Crown as a volunteer on the last leg of their 2012 tour starting in Allentown.

Am I the only one that feels they need to stop changing and just clean? I love this corps to death but cleaning seems to be a huge priority.
I spent some time Monday watching them in Charlotte......they are spending a lot of time cleaning and breaking things down.

Be glad you didn't march with Crown. Otherwise, the Crown blind loyalist would be taking a lot of frustration out on you like they do on me for saying the same general thing you have in this message.
Corbin- I will (once again) offer to met you to discuss.

Many of the people commenting on Crown in this post should be glad that a couple of die hard Crown loyalist are at Nightbeat tonight and not on DCP, otherwise you all would be getting a lot of negativity from a least one person who bothers me on a continuous basis :P. Some people take loyalty to their corps as a life and death issue. SO STUPID!!!!!
Stay Classy man.....

I'm glad for the organization that the show was success.....I guess in the neighborhood of 7000 people in attendance. As far as complaints about the stadium.....What do you expect from a facility that was built in 1939? yes it's a pain getting into and out of your seats. But unfortunately (currently) there are no better places to hold the event (the NFL stadium will NEVER happen). Now with that said...the local university is building a football stadium- now could that be a possibility in future years? Time will tell.
One thing no one has mentioned......the field timps/ bass in "Fanfare" were DEAD LOCKED IN from my side A 45 yard line (back against the press box) seat location.

My dad and I are flying out to NC from California on Saturday and I have 2 questions:
1. Where is CC practicing?
2. Where would locals eat real NC BBQ?
THANKS in advance!
-Kevin
1. Memorial Stadium Sunday & Monday
2. Charlotte.....close to Uptown (Memorial Stadium)- Mac's Speed Shop, Penguin and Pinky's Westside Grill are very solid choices. If one want's to venture south into the Fort Mill area there are there are 2 very good choices....PM me if interested.
