  1. I heard through the grapevine that Troopers will not be adding any props to the field other than some tarps. When I was watching their show on FloMarching I was wondering if there were props to come because the show seemed very much designed with only the field in mind, without props. We'll see how this plays out in the coming weeks.

  2. I wish more corps could afford to do what the BD organization has been able to put together for so many years. It's such an important aspect of drum corps that people keep wanting to see more of. Maybe someday other world class organizations will be able to put together small local teaching programs again. (if there's a market for it)

Thank you to the BD organization for continuing to do this work. And yay BDC!!!

As much as I hate to say it..  I have a couple of gigs I am performing in tomorrow. I need to get some rest... I absolutely feel horrible for going to bed right now, but....

I am proud of The Cavaliers!!! GO CAVIES AND KICK SOME BUTT!!! Splooie!

WIMP! (just kidding - I took a lengthy nap just so I could maybe stay up late enough to see everyone. And I don't have to get up early.)

  4. I'll also go by decades. But if I have to pick just one..... Man, that's tough. I'm going to go with Bloo 2016.

1983 Garfield - the first time I saw the Z pull I lost my mind. Love that show!

1986 BD - this show was like being hit by a musical freight train, what a monster!

1995 Cavies - Why? because PLANETS, that's why

2006 Cavies - Machine was just freakin' awesome as a concept and the show design really made that concept work

2008 Phantom - some folks will claim those of us who like this show just liked that BD lost. I actually loved BD's "Absurdity" show in 2008. A lot. But Spartacus 2008 was really well crafted, and the energy of Phantom's run up to championship night was just as electric as it could get

Crown 2013 - So much yummy stuff in this show that makes goosebumps happen for me

Bloo 2016 - Down Side Up was brilliant and made me want to watch it over and over again. And that makes it my #1 pick.

  5. Housing options are definitely a problem, but there are solutions that the drum corps community may have to adopt:

    1) Stop expecting to get a venue all to yourself with 2-3 football fields for rehearsal

    2) Be prepared to travel to a rehearsal venue (district football stadium, or a larger HS stadium near an elementary/middle school) for visual blocks shared with other corps - this could be organized by performance order or random draw

    3) Be prepared to fairly share a large campus and all rehearsal facilities with another corps (this may already happen - it used to happen a lot with so many corps on tour when I started marching in the 80's)

As for your endgame question: I honestly don't know.

  6. 1983 SCV - for very personal reasons: It was the first "big drum corps show" I ever saw and I was mesmerized. The large amounts of Copland in the program, especially Appalachian Spring, opened up the rabbit hole for me into symphonic Americana. Copland became a huge focal point for both listening and study, including my masters thesis. And in 2009 when they brought back Appalachian Spring the way that they did, I was so happy.

  7. Wish list: Troopers in top 12. Yeah, I know that's a stretch but I'm open about my home corps bias. 😄

The hard part about this topic is that for someone to move up, others have to move down. The good news is that there will be great shows that run the gamut of placements, top to bottom. I'm looking forward to San Antonio so I can see them all!

First Troopers show I've been interested in ever. If you are still excited after changes to tradition then it's gotta be a good one.

I've been looking forward to a break from certain traditions for a while. It was going to take a huge leap of faith and courage to do this. It's finally done, and I'm so incredibly proud of the Troopers for making this move. Now I have to go listen to source music! Their premier show is tomorrow in Fruitland, ID. I wish I could be there!
