  1. I really didn't want to reply, but there seems to be a lot of idiocy in some posters statements. Thirdcoast: You ask how I could find Madison 2010 boring? In my thread I tell you directly that I didn't attend a single show in 2010, so I didn't find them to be anything. Another person thinks this leaving statement is an ego boost. I am leaving because I don't go to shows, so how can I have an intelligent debate about said shows that I no longer attend? You are exactly who I have no further use for. As for the Hollywood statement. If I paid fifteen bucks to go sit through 11 straight boring movies just to see three minutes of excitement, then YES, I would stop going to movies. The arrogance of some of you is stifling. I didn't say that the drum corps movement as whole is bad. Its just something I no longer have fun with. Alas, I have never once you tubed any corps for any reason. I am not a young pup with time to waste. I don't live for yesteryear, I can only live day to day, and today is gonna be a good one. Also a launchin pad for personal stements comment: Their was an ENTIRE THREAD about whether or not someone could leave altogether, and I am showing that, yes, someone can and is. It is funny to see some of the anger and hatred for someone to say they are leaving. Don't hate me for leaving, celebrate that there will be one less donor to any corps, one less paid attendee to any show, and one less bored person in the stands. Have a great life, and learn not to hate so much. It is your hatred that drives people away more than any boring show ever could.

  2. It was asked in another thread if you could really walk away from drum corps completely. I have thought long and hard about that. I have to say yes. It has been a great ride, but the car I am in now is just not working for me. I think the shows are extremely well done, but very boring, over used keys and amps that make it hard to even hear the corps. I gave the amps a chance their first year and wasn't too fond of them but could live with it. I gave voice a chance and then heard Yowza. One more straw on the camels back. Then came the hornline doubling synths. I just can't enjoy it anymore and find that I won't be attending shows any further, and didn't at all in 2010. With that said I really can't in any sense of honesty come on here and debate the shows or their direction any longer. I will miss drum corps but I am saying goodbye to it. Also want to thank a lot of you for intelligent conversation and spirited debates. It was fun, but now it is over. I only wish you all well.

  3. I would actually be more interested if they went back to '80s style.....or even back to the '70s. Let's carry our instrument and march!! (Sorry pit, just my opinion, can't say you marched drum corps if you didn't "march")

Guess that wipes out all corps members then because guards haven't marched since they became professional dancers and horns and drum are either running or prancing. Where have you been?

  4. Would I walk away? Absolutely not--in fact, I would start spending more money on tickets, merchandise, etc. Personally, I feel the activity NEEDS a return to the 80s and 90s formats in order to break up the blandness and sameness we see and hear from corps to corps today.

Why? You don't like this years new title from corps x. This years show will be titled, "Palpable feelings of neurotic monks on planet Mars, with mirrors and a door in three phases of moon." With snippets of unrecognizable music by thirty eight different composers. Now sit back as we blastingly resort to putting you into the nicest deepest tranquil sleep you ever had.

  5. Many drum corps fans have their "if DCI adds X, I'm pulling my support" statement. It's different for various people... but I wonder how many people are REALLY going to give up this activity so easily?

In my opinion, I think most people on here make a lot of noise about WW's, Amps, and Bb horns...but I wonder how many people are REALLY boycotting DCI completely?? That means no merchandise, no shows, no DVDs, no CDs, no Fan Network, no downloads, no donations to ANY DCI corps, and no tuition sponsorships since your "X" was added to DCI?

Fess up now... and keep in mind that I'm not looking to ridicule anyone, just curious. I think the number is very low. I believe that it speaks to the true power of the activity, that no matter what form it takes and no matter how peeved a certain vocal minority gets about the evolution of the activity, I think 99.9% of the fans stick with it because their love is that deep.

So I put it to you now...who's for real? And please keep in mind that I WILL be looking for anyone who speaks up at every DCI show in the country. :angel1:

I like how you seem to be able to speak for everyone and say their is a vocal MINORITY, yet the poll on adding woodwinds had a tangible number saying almost 4-1 people woulod leave if they add woodwinds. I for one am not a blow hard. I gave amps, bass guitars and the ilk a chance and saw it as an epic fail. I never saw a show this year, didn't buy a souvie and have no plans to buy dvds of corps using 20 tubas with a synth overlaying the same hornline. I left, FOR REAL. I am actually planning on leaving this site as a contributor too. That ones hard to do. I will do it when I get the willpower. But don't think for one minute that people aren't doing it. My question to you is where are all the new people coming from? I don't see an increase in attendance, so people must be walking away.

  6. Here's where we agree. I think it fully appropriate to change the name, now that the genre has changed. I'm with you on this topic, MikeD.

We should not call these musical units " Drum and Bugle Corps with a Color Guard". It is simply disengenuous, as well a inaccurate description. Frankly, its not fair to these current musical marching bands, nor to the " Drum and Bugle Corps" that preceeded these fine musical marching units of today.

We've be told that " change is good and/ or inevitable ". If so, then why is there the relunctance then by so many who support such radical transformations to likewse not support the change in the name as well ? I never understood these folks logic. Why do they have a problem calling these units " marching music dance bands " or some such, when in reality this would be much more more accurate (and honest ) than calling them " Drum and Bugle Corps with Color Guards ". In other words, shouldn't transformative " change " also apply to the neccessary and logical changing of the naming of these DCI units too now ?

Cause they want the cake, ( that we baked ) and they want to eat it too.

  7. Michael: If the major goal is to just "raise attendance figures at Finals", and the all corps attending all of the Regionals system hurts attendance figures at Finals, then of course get rid of the all corps at all Regionals system. However, if the goal is to "increase overall annual revenue for DCI as well as increase overall ticket sales nationwide for DCI", and the all corps at all Regionals / Finals system actually provides both of those items, even though Finals attendance might drop due to that system, keeping the all corps at all Regionals system would be wise.

With that logic then have all the corps at every show, yet have less shows and money will follow. Right?

  8. I don't think they are increasing because of the changes, but I don't think they are decreasing because of them either. I think corps getting smaller are more economy driven. I think actual facts, not hunches, would convince me.

Yet, a poll of drum corps fans, albeit megafans, say almost 4-1 that they would be done with DCI if ww get adopted. That is just a hunch? Honestly? Did they just lie? Or do we not get to count them?

  9. I'm in the real world. I'm not trying to convince the planet of what is right, I just haven't seen anything that would support the claim that people are leaving solely due to accessibility. I'm unconvinced.

I actually respect your opinion, yet I ask: Are you convinced that the numbers are increasing due to changes made? Is there no correlation to the member limit going up and smaller corps getting smaller or disappearing altogether? Would anything actually convince you? Honest questions not intended to be pointed.

  10. But they aren't based on anything real, so no, they are not 'actual' in any sense of the world. DCP polls are not truly indicative of anything activity-wide, so your numbers are meaningless.

Yeah, your right. People say what they want in a poll and it doesn't mean anything. They all lie anyway. Keep that head in the sand, it will all blow over. So people that voted,YOU ARE NOT REAL. :guinesssmilie:

  11. Yes, as one change among others to continue the decades old process of changes to keep drum corps relevant and attractive to audiences. Not "electronics=more people", but rather more relevant and contemporary drum corps = more people". IMO the two are not the same thing.

So with audiences shrinking, maybe change has caused all of that. Cause and effect, right? What exactly is "relevant and contemporary?" How is that working for the masses?

To keep being relevant to the audience. What audience are you referring to? The one that gets smaller each year? The one that has shown stagnant growth to the point of DCI not saying what attendance was. I am quite sure if the audience was growing we would have that idea pumped with stats to back it.

  13. Simply, WOW. Please tell me you are attempting to make a joke or write some form of satire.

No. That is the real plan.... the kid marched in the Devils and they had a boring show that most drum corps fans didn't get, so everybody is a hater and has no class or manners. Just go back to 08 and talk Devils manners, or go to Cali for the champs and see what kind of class there was. Typical for their kind. Hows that for a big brush?

  14. I thought it was exciting. And half the crowd leaving is a function of LOS/mid-west and it's ill-mannered, sore losers (if one of their own isn't the winner). Period!

If you want exciting and crowd interest...move it out of LOS and preferably another part of the country that knows how to act with class at one of these performance judged events!!

Wow the Devils have to be proud. That is why everyone left, they were sore losers, and have no manners. You really are unreal. :guinesssmilie: Saddest part of it all is that you probably even believe yourself.
