  1. Since woodwinds are not in DCI, it is a complete hypothetical. In fact, this whole thread is nothing but hypothetical. If you aren't gonna go to a DCI show because of woodwinds, I think you are missing the point of drum corps anyways.

It doesn't matter that woodwinds aren't in DCI. The numbers taken are actuals, not hypotheticals. Second point: what is the point of drum corps then? It seems that 3/4 of us don't know.

  2. What if drum corps had always included WW? Are you saying you would not have joined because of the mere existence of a flute player?

You should never pay for something you dislike, of course, nor should you force yourself to attend a show if you are not entertained. But...you can only speak for yourself, not for these hypothetical 'thousands'.

No hypothetical about it. From the attendance thread. There were 17,500 people at a championship show. There are 3-1 votes hating woodwinds in drum corps, from this thread. Take the 3/4s of 17,500 and you come up with 13,125 that hate woodwinds. Now take half away for people that don't care and you still have 6562 people that would hate drum corps. So who is hypothetical, a known number being divided by a known number, or your presumptions? If my math is off please enlighten me. I never claimed to be good at it.

  3. And let me say again, I suspect that DCI is accumulating attendance numbers for the whole season, and it makes sense to do so considering their recent emphasis on regional shows that finals attendance is less important than the whole season.

Anecdotally, our show, just 10 days ago, got the final tally of attendance and income/expense numbers. And our show was July 11. Regardless of why it took us so long, I can see why it's taking DCI so long to accumulate the season's numbers.

Patience is a virtue. Does it really matter that we have the numbers NOW, and when YOU think they should be available?

The off-season runs for another few months, after all.

No it really doesn't matter. You are right, i have to be wrong. I will be patiently waiting for those numbers. See you in a couple decades.

  4. Allow me to help you here. Major league baseball is different than drum corps in many ways. Off the top of my head...they use bats and a ball, they have 3 bases and a home plate. They have innings. Also, they are for profit. Their athletes are paid millions of dollars.

That's just off the top of my head.

Short format...baseball does not equal drum corps.

Color it any way you want, it still isn't hard to know how many people came through your gates. How many tickets sold. They don't know this, really  ? Not a very sound way to conduct business.

  5. Numbers for 2008 were just under 17.5K

    2009 were 15.5K

    2010 were higher than 2009.

Why does DCI owe anyone the attendance numbers? I don't get that. When the news is good, DCI will trumpet it. When the numbers aren't so good, they don't share it. Sounds like smart PR to me.

They don't owe their fans anything. :worthy: This is an attendance thread, why is everyone so upset with the request for those numbers. Smart PR? So you are saying the activity is hurting if they don't release their numbers? Why do they release them at baseball games, every game? Not just the good games. Like I said earlier, when you have nothing to hide, you hide nothing. Done with debate, the numbers won't be released and it doesn't matter.

  6. patience...

2008 was over a looonnnngggggg time ago and the numbers aren't out for that, yet the numbers for the Cubs game will be released by the 8th inning of the game that day. Someone wants the numbers kept under the rug, for some reason. This really isn't my fight, but I find it funny that every year people ask the attendance question, and it is never released. WHY????? Lots of speculation and no answers. I will keep waiting patiently

  7. DCI has evolved into one mysterious and paranoid schizophrenic organization. They're acting like attendence figures should be a closely guarded secret of national security, among other things.....

When they guard something so simple and asked for, then ya, you might be right. If you have nothing to hide, then you hide nothing.

  8. Brass Band is an entity of non-change.

Drum Corps is an entity of change.

...and Ive already made the claim that current drum corps (brass only) is already perceived by the masses as a souped up halftime show, or battle of the bands. My 16 yr old niece called it such this summer...with pride! "Wow, this is like the Olympics of Battle of the Bands! Only the super excellent are here!" She didn't even notice it was brass only...nor care. I had to point it out to her.

It's the insiders that want to protect the brass. The outsiders just want to be excellently entertained.

How many outsiders go to a show WITHOUT an insider? Would your niece have been there without you?

  9. I wonder how similar the poll results would be if this were asked 10 years before amps, 10 years before the switch to Bb, etc ;)

There are too many positive things about the activity to remove my support bc of WWs. To me, it's actually a little selfish to think you'd stop supporting something that was of value to you when you were young...simply because you don't like the different sound. The activity is more important than a brass only sound vs. combined sound.

Yeah, what he said. You should for sure spend your money and time listening to something you don't like.

  10. I'm not a huge sports fan but this time of year central Ohio becomes abuzz with Buckeye Fever. The season opener is this Thursday night. Tickets are something like $70.

As I was thinking about whether I should bother going to the game...it's a school night (gotta take my son)...it'll be hot (sat through that at our drum corps show in July, and I'm not a big sports fan)...it'll be expensive ($150 plus dinner? Times how many games in the season? And some say drum corps is expensive!?)... You get the drift.

Yet, getting down to the stadium will be as tough as it is for the OSU/Michigan game; you won't be able to drive. The roads will clog three miles away from the stadium and, when you get to the stadium, the mass of people will mean shoulder-to-shoulder "surging" that will amaze most and irritate some. Crazy parties will abound, with tailgating 10 blocks from the stadium. It is "An Event", like many others, that will run repeatedly for the next ten weeks. But this game? Really?

The Buckeyes are something like 20 points ahead in the line. Marshall, a proud and tough team, doesn't really have a chance of winning, yet even Buckeye fans in the crowd will applaud and honor Marshall's players when they make the inevitable great play. And Marshall will lay they're best on the field for a full four quarters (not 3, as some early corps performances seem willing to accept). When they're done they'll likely be proud of the effort and begin to focus on changes and "cleaning" (sound familiar?).

Is it really about "the game"? Maybe for a few, on the outside chance that Marshall will upset the Bucks. But for most it's about "the experience", the fun, the excited crowd, the history, their memories.

I'm not much of a sports fan but being in that crowd, from the time we get on the bus to head to the stadium, is intoxicating. I know that feeling well because I usually take my son to a game courtesy of my father-in-law's gratis tickets.

But I also know that feeling well because I, personally, feel it every year when I go to finals. That Buzz, that excitement, the history, the memories. Do I care, really, if Cadets beat 'Coats in July? Not really. As the season progresses does competition become more exciting? Yea, you bet. But I go see a July show with just as much excitement as finals, not because I think Troopers will beat Phantom, but because of "The Experience".

I realize that the judging aspect of drum corps needs work (unless you ask a BD honk like Plan9 () . But The Experience keeps me coming back while those problems are fixed; I still want to see Marshall play well, as I do Crown in July. To make July drum corps more attractive it has to have a great "Experience". Having a compelling competition by the time of finals week makes The Experience just that much better.

DCI would do well to focus on both, and not be fooled into thinking that one is more important to spend resources on than the other.

EDIT: to add the cheap shot at Plan9

Really well thought out. I wonder if the paragraph police will arrest you? Too bad this thread was hijacked with inane my team is better than yours mantra. My team stinks, but I will always back them. Now what were you saying about some experience?

  11. i think if he went back he would shoot for an even higher corps bc at the time guardsmen came in around 11th (which is about where glassmen r at). so he basically wants me to aim high but i dont think he realizes how difficult it is to make a snare line

Shoot for the corps you like, NOT the one with the best placement. You go for placement and you might have a long horrible summer. Life isn't about placement and the sooner you learn that the better. Remember this: Only one, ONE corps goes home the champ. Roll the dice, OR march somewhere with the corps you relate to musically and stylewise.

  12. I don't think that's what the potential member was thinking. Perhaps a certain corps was one of the first ones they saw that really connected with them. In the formative ages, such experiences are quite powerful.

I am merely pointing out my answer to his question. Somewhat tongue in cheek. I hate ring chasing. Too much is lost by people limiting their experience to only the top 3 or so. The closest I came to top 12 was 17th, ( 16th if you count a DQ, I don't ). I am still living those summers over in my head. The fun we had and the memories we made.

  13. having the Floridakid posting on this forum asking for ideas on how he can get an opportunity to march drum corps next summer tells me drum corps is most certainly NOT DEAD.

Actually that concludes that it is indeed dying. A few years ago, he would have been able to find a corps very close and in a very reasonable price range. Not so anymore. Now you have to SEARCH for the corps to join. They used to come looking for you.

  14. You gotta love ticketscammer. Maybe attendance would go up if they were gone and people could hand pick their seat and not pay a convience charge for the convience of dealing with a computer picking your seat. I am sorry, I forgot, all technology is good technology and everybody benefits from it, right Mike....
