  1. "Good technique" for Drum Corps maybe but if you want to have any kind of career in music you need to play with a technique that’s good for the other 99% of music that includes solos, orchestra, small ensembles etc. The amps in the Pit have really made drum corps a practical application of Classical Percussion Technique and overall helps students (like me) improve on techniques that they can very readily use in other realms of the music world. Amps by far improve the musicality, technique, and sound of a drum corps that pre-amp days would never be able to achieve. Without amps drum corps was not a progressive medium for mallet percussionists which is why it was often looked down upon in the 80's and 90's but amps have given more credibility to mallet percussion instruction in recent years.

And for the students who aren't looking at music as a future career at least the amps allow for them to learn proper mallet technique and be proper musicians rather than just solely drum corps musicians.

I would say that this is a good answer, but for the love of God. TURN THEM DOWN. I could hear them before amps, now ALL we get to hear is the amped pit. Unless your in Lucas Oil, then you get to here this.... WJUDSEBYVWEVHJ^YSWY&GVDZTRVSYBUHGFWAGACK.....

  2. yeah I can't imagine a judge speaking out against DCI publicly

The judges have already spoken out about the sound in the article that had them saying how there was NO SOUND problems at the stadium. They had no problem judging everyone fairly as the sound was FINE. Go back a few pages and you will find their comments. The article appeared shortly after the article by DCI saying how they are working hard to fix the sound problem.......that their judges don't acknowledge.

  3. If ww's were legalised (which I still doubt will happen) they'd only be used in the pit with amps. No way you're gonna add the numbers you'd need to balance the ww sound with the brass sound acoustically -- just isn't gonna happen.

This is exactly why the powers that be enacted a rule to allow small ensembles to be mic'd. You never really need to mic a brass instrument so why the rule.......... so when woodwinds are voted in they already have a way to mic them out in the pit.

  4. This is just came to me when I read some of people's comments in the Lucas Sound thread.

Are we sure that "boycotting" DCI World Championships will really get things to change in terms of improving the sound quality of Lucas Oil Stadium? I mean fixing the problem would involve money and if people boycott DCI's biggest cash cow then where is DCI going to get the cash to fix Lucas Oil Stadium? I feel that it may just be vicious cycle where DCI gets to a point where they see they need to change but thanks to boycotts can't afford to do the changes they want!

Couldn't a lack of adequate attendance at Lucas Oil put DCI out of business before they even have time to fix the problems the general public has concerns about? Not only Lucas sound issues but other organizational issues, that if solved, could make DCI a better organization and drum corps a better activity?

Please, if you can go Lucas Oil, GO! Its sucks just as much to play in the dome as it does to listen to people play in it! But, I think it’s in everyone's best interest to attend DCI World Champions. By all means, make sure DCI knows that the sound sucks, just don't do it in a way that could potentially topple the organization! I personally think that the more revenue DCI has the greater the chance they will be able to make positive changes to the activity. Starving them won't make it any easier and you just make the problem worse! Think of your ticket as an investment to a brighter future in DCI.

Give DCI the money they need to fix the problem, give the performers an audience they deserve while performing their final shows, and give the future of DCI a fighting chance!

GO TO DCI WORLD FINALS AT LUCAS OIL

I give you credit for your passion, even when you are being offered an inferior product for higher prices. So I will take you up on going to Lucas a second time if you pay for me. I promise I will go, I just won't pay for it again. Fool me once shame on you, but I don't give you the second chance. I can wait for DCI to move in 8 years if DCI is still around and without woodwinds, then I will go, if DCI isn't around anymore due to their foolish 10 year commitments, then that is survival of the fittest and I will find a different avenue to be entertained by. Hope to see it flourish without my money, but I won't help in this losing cause.

  5. I emailed DCI directly with the question of when this show will happen so I can make vacation arrangements and 72 hours later I still have no inmail from them. I think they say they get back in 8. Guess my family won't be heading that way this year. Thanks for your speed in response DCI. :sigh:

OK, so its been over 8 days without a reply. Nice job with your fans DCI. You know, you could have easily replied, " We are currently working this situation out", and that would have sufficed. But NOTHING?????????:devil:

  6. While I would hate to see woodwinds added to the mix, I am shocked that the majority of voters (as of this time) would be so selfish as to say they would prefer drum corps to die rather than add in woodwinds. Nice to know that your hurt feelings about changes in drum corps are more important than the thousands of kids who would be denied the experience due to your selfishness.

You don't get the point. Drum corps would BE dead, it would then be nothing more than another band circuit. What is the ONLY thing keeping drum corps form being band?????

  7. OK, I will play nice in this question. I think that the usage of synths was good last year. I didn't want them and didn't like to see them voted in, but the usage was good overall. I think Teal did a great job and Spirit fought through a lot of bad publicity and did what they wanted. I give them alot of credit for that. The only true downfall I heard was all the fake horn parts being doubled. As if the fan is too stupid to tell. Why would a judge give a hornline any kind of good score with fake horns. Overall a well done useage all around with synths.

  9. What an ignorant statement. I freakin' learned how to teach from watching my drum corps instructors, many of whom are respected music educators in their day jobs. No education in drum corps? Whatever, dude.

Before getting overexcited, read the rest of the posts and note that it was already addressed and very well put to bed. The only ignorance in it was someone spouting off before reading the whole argument amd keeping a mistatement alive......... dude.

  10. Honestly I was just formulating a hypothesis out-loud (dangerous on dcp haha) but I think my point was missed WHY is it cuts seems to just give up without marching somewhere that is more their speed to work them-selves up? Some the best, and smartest, drum corps "youngsters" I know started in DCA or and open class DCI and worked themselves up.

I guess what I wanna leave here for those of us with A.D.D. (I can make fun of it I have it haha) is WHY to so many people try out for upper world class then give up? :worthy:

I would venture a guess in that it is the cost of doing so. They want a certain corps ( usually a top one) and if they can't have that, they keep their money for other things?

  11. You know, there's no point arguing over this. None of you are corps directors/board members who vote on this stuff so this really doesnt matter. You're getting worked up over what THEY thought will be BEST for the corps this season.

As for the pre-show and age rule. If you read them, you would understand them

This is known as a chat room, where people chat and express differing opinions. That is the point of arguing this, expression of opinions. We know or I should say feel, that the directors of corps and DCI itself could care less what we think. It is evident every time they do anything. The customer is never brought into the discussion. They are just expected to swallow the changes put forth and LIKE IT. Then you get some directors, one in particular who contemplates quite extensively, " what is wrong with drum corps today", but doesn't see the forest through the trees, and doesn't look in the direction of the forest when shown by the fans who live there. If no one argued over anything, this would be a really boring chatroom. IMO.

  12. and out dated equipment used forcing groups to buy another set of horns if they wanted to keep up for the Jones'

God Bless the corps thats got their own

But that doesn't matter cause we all know it has been said many times by one person who knows EVERYTHING EVERY corps has ever thought or felt, that it is good even if it killed off those that couldn't afford change mandated by those that either got free horns or heavily discounted horns. All change is great no matter how many corps disappear as a result. He knows...........:thumbup:

  13. If there is a plus t the 150 member rule, it's that it is virtually impossible to tell the differance between a corps with 145 members vs 150 members. There is the hastle of closing holes, but I seriously doubt any of the top corps will be filling holes with less than desirable members just to put bodies on the field.

No corps should be at less than 150. Weren't we all told of the hundreds of members corps were turning away? Wasn't that why they went to 150? A corps like Phantom will have no problem finding what they need by the time they need it.

  14. While that is often the case, it is not universally true. I know several cases in the last 3 years where a kid got cut and went somewhere else. (One actually moved to a higher placing corps, then got a call form the corps who cut him to offer him a spot. Ooops.)

This can't possibly be true. Its already been stated on here by someone who personally knows that no rule has ever done anything but benefit EVERY corps. Its a done deal, get with the program.

  15. No rule change has forced a corps to do anything they do not want to do.

Actually a size rule change cost some lower placing corps members, so that in itself hurt that corps. Corps that did not change their horns to everyone elses specs, hurt that corps. There is more, but I don't think that anyone would believe it because it has been said that no rule ever hurt any corps, so it must be.

  16. I respectfully disagree with this statement for one reason only: I believe if drum corps get much bigger in size it will limit their ability to clean effectively. Of course we'd ALL love to hear 120 member hornlines LOL.......but I can't see it being refined to the precision we all expect from our top 12.

I don't believe that you will still have a top twelve if all corps can march any number they want as there are only so many members available. You may have a top 8. Tell me that BD and Garfield march 200, where do you think those extra 50 are coming from? It is already evident in corps size with the recent shift to 150. The top 6-8 may have that number but the rest can't field a full corps anymore. Why?

  17. Yes, beneficial to every corps. "Can't handle"??? Why should I have to 'handle' snide and sarcastic personal comments?

Sarcasm was intended to respond to anyone who thinks they can speak personally for every single corps out there, that every rule has benefited them. Had that person stated, "IMO" then thier point is taken as it should be, (edited so as not to offend anyone), but to pretend to know personally that every corps benefits from every rule change is just plain arrogant( for those that think that way). I can't say anyone is wrong, because I don't speak for all corps like some people think they do.
