I really think this group knows what they are trying to do for this season.

Phantom top 3 is not in thier aim..

They are trying to do a new course  of phase in thier trajectory... let them get it right as they always do and see how this pans out over the course of a planned program.

Much like Boston, this is a program that takes time.

I'm so happy to see regiment back at it... can't wait to see what their finals position this year brings them next year 🙌

Nothing good happens over night... give this corps time.

They always make it with a few years under their belt.

Maybe so, but achieve and “maintain” top 5 and win some captions needs to be their never ending top priority that drives every decision they make.  They need to win at least one caption per year, especially brass and percussion.  Sponsors will be easier to get and it will attract more experienced, more mature talent.

I would rather still be called “the best corps to never win” with a continuous top 5 presence than the peaks and valleys this corp is consistent at, and their valleys can be quiet wide at times.

Not sure what you want rewritten in the closer but I am pretty sure they will be making some dot changes for Allentown for the closer.

We can see things coming to the show but its all about execution.

I have no faith that they will move up at all in ranking (as much as that pains me to say). The show isn't what Judges want any more. Can they clean and add dynamics to the brass line? Sure but all some corps around them need to do is walk on the field and they are already penciled in higher (Mandarins scoring higher by a point in Brass is embarrassing for DCI personally).

The future could be bright however I dont' think they will be a destination corps for another couple years. Perc wont really improve and the issues with guard is widely known.

I guess I'm a pessimist but I love the corps and will always support them.

“The show isn’t what the judges want anymore” is an excuse that dates back 30+ years ago when I marched and beyond.  I heard it all the time.  The bottom line is, the corps in the top 5 just have better, more experienced players.  Music selection, arranging and instruction aren’t the issues, it’s all about execution and the top 5 corps do it better because they have better performers.

What a great performance! I thought they wouldn’t be able to top last year for me, but this is such a great show. I think this will be one we fans are listening to loooooong after this season. I also have to say the guard has really stepped it up in the last week. There is some killer rifle work going on. I’m not a huge fan of pumping up the volume on the front ensemble, nor the ethereal ahhs, but I am old school. I loved ‘93 when they were out in the field. However, I love the bass reinforcement, and the bass drops add a lot.

Lost me at amplification.  Nothing makes brass sound more unnatural and off tune than amplification.  Apparently, lung capacity must not be what it once was.

You ASSume too much. I worked IT and lot of my job was to work out “if we did this what would happen?”. It’s called thinking ahead.

If people don’t care enough about the activity to ask questions then the activity is screwed. IMO “whatever happens, happens…” is not where we want drum corps to be.

I don’t believe if/then logic works well in an emotionally charged forum such as this.

…. How would it affect the individual corps?

For you Marvel comics fans, gonna play “What If?”

What If? DCI got clobbered with a major lawsuit that zeroed out the books. Or What If? The board decided to disband the organization.

How would it affect the individual corps in both WC and OC? IOW time for the alternate history

    (getting popcorn)

The activity, as we know it, would vanish.  It’s evident, by the many “what if” type posts like this, that there are many who long for such a fate to this activity.

  6. If it’s more difficult to decide which is better these days, it’s because there has been a monumental shift away from the fundamentals of what drum corps is.  There has been so much more complexity and palaver added to show designs in the pursuit of creating a 100 yard theater setting which counters what drum corps is and makes judging it accurately a next to impossible mission.  You could throw darts and likely do just as good as today’s judging.

Heaven forbid today’s staff and members found out about that the golden days of DCI actually included the occasional post-show fisticuffs between corps to further establish superiority, despite the scores.

A few items on my 2022 wishlist...

    - JD Shaw continues to lead the brass caption.
    - Let the design team get weird. The 2020 show was going to be Mahler's 5th, so not exactly weird, but certainly something new.
    - Allow electronics to be more substantial than choral voiceovers. Rob Ferguson leads Matrix Percussion for crying out loud - "he's a peacock, you gotta let him fly."

Unplug that crap and let the horns do what they’re suppose to do.

  8. Either I’m looking in the wrong place or DCI has posted very little about what’s going on in Indy this week on its web site.  Where are the lists of corps participating and the schedules?  All I’m finding in their schedule are the regional events over the past couple weeks.

Assume they can use all the same arrangements and save money...?

Let’s hope so, no electronic instruments and sound systems.  Definitely a year for complexity reduction to save resources.  However, the 2003 horn book will require some very strong lungs and robust embouchures to get that sound today.

Not in its past form, no. Those days are gone. Covid will not dissapear, just become manageable.   The new model, starting in 2022, should be theatre and concert hall shows, borrowing from Blast, and other Star of Indiana productions.  80 member corps--each performing for around 45 minutes. 3-4 corps per show.  Advantages: No more need for high school and college housing. No need for football field usage. Hotel stays, offset by much lower fuel and bus charges and school rentals.  No more rain-outs, which cause big financial losses for the home corps. Time for DCI to think towards the future, while keeping our beloved activity going.

Your concept definitely will mean the end of drum corps.

It’s the pessimism that keeps me coming back to this site.

From what I've read, one of the problems with developing an effective vaccine for covid  has always been  the speed and frequency that covid mutates.

I heard on the news this morning that they're already working a third dose "booster" for the

    South African mutation.

The flu virus(s) does the same thing and more-so as there are more strains and a large portion of society never gets vaccinated and we’re still here.

  12. I would sure hope that most 23 year olds have a full-time job, if not, they sure should.

Most grad / PhD students do so part-time while employed full-time, unless in med school, where they have no time for DCI.

Most DCI members are either in high school or college.  No need for any additional requirements.  It’s an amateur activity, leave it that way.

In 92 we had a contra player that was sent home two weeks before Finals. Luckily they were able to bring in a vet who, until he got the call, had planned to take the summer off.

The exact same thing happened in ‘91, also.  Sure it wasn’t ‘91?

I wonder if it would make sense for temporary rules limiting some of the items that add great cost to tour budgets to help corps field shows next season. With the ongoing issues many items that have been incorporated into shows  have increased tour cost greatly. Many things you need to keep in mind are the costs behind the scenes to transport, build , and purchase these items. Trust me I LOVE drum corps today, but for the good of the activity should it be considered for things like props, electronics (except for miking keyboards) and uniform changes ect..... Would it make sense to preserve DCI tours by making it easier to go on tour, the trucks, the volunteers, and additional staffing that need to be fed paid and transported, the initial costs are a huge burden to bear as well.

Just a thought, we cant lose these amazing performers or it will take years to rebuild, if at all, I can tell you my summer stinks, and no Indie!, crap

No.  Temporary rules rarely remain that way.  The last thing anyone needs are more rules and regulations.  It is the responsibility of each corps to make these types of decisions.
