How does alumni not get an “urgent assistance” email or this not made a “dire situation” in advance when there was ample time for a remote possibility?! As a corporate exec myself, ALL of the top is to blame and heads should roll. What an embarrassing #### show.
As an alumni, I’m heartbroken and furious at the same time how this was so mismanaged and communicated. Had any of us alumni known the actual current state, we could have, would have, made a difference.
Cmon now, as a “corporate exec” you should be smart enough to understand that every corps is hurting year to year. If they aren’t meeting fundraising goals there is only so much they can do. Can’t send out a “911 - Save the Corps” email every single season. If it wasn’t this year, was going to be next. If people need that to donate, that’s a people problem.
The drum corps community (and society in general) acts like they are so supportive, but most people aren’t donating or volunteering until it’s the worst case scenario.

Definitely not wrong, but also so much focus on the big corps and not enough on the little ones. More corps is better for the activity. More corps means more fans, more sales, more fundraising, more merch sales etc etc. But with the loss of the "regional" and "local" drum corps and more focus on national talent, there's not foundational support anymore.
With Open Class we aren't even guaranteed to get into the shows we want to - World Class gets first dibs and if they take up all the spots OC is pushed aside. The entire tour is set up for corps to fail.

Can't believe I'm responding to a thread that has been around longer than I've been on DCP.
Who the heck are these people?
I'd love to know how many people marching this season weren't even born when this post was made.

Honestly if I wanted to shed some light on some Open Class news/issues etc, I would probably post it in the World Class threads too.
Sadly, the open class forums are like LA Rams/LA Chargers home games...................no one shows up.
Agreed. If you want people to actually take notice of Open groups, the two forums should just be combined. Make the current Open Class forum one for SoundSport.

Not that it's an insignificant amount, but River City Rhythm dues were $2500 last season, and that includes a 8 week "full-time" tour from mid-June through DCI Finals. Their dues are on the lower end of all Open Class groups, especially those that have a full-time tour.

I understand. But the Corps can say 'This is what we can pay you', correct? And the contractor can take it or leave it.
The group I work for (albeit is open class so it’s likely a much different world than world class) pays by the day. If you break down the hourly rate it’s anywhere from $4-5/hr depending on the daily schedule. We already struggle enough getting people to teach for how little pay it is (most people have real life costs). Taking 10% off the staff budget saves a couple grand at best, but you’re probably hurting member experience by losing staff more than you’re gaining anything by saving minimal money.

That is an excellent idea - if shows are 10% shorter than they should cost 10% less to design, & 10% less to clean.
Yeahhhh not how it works. Unless move-ins/tour is shorter, staff aren’t being paid any less. They aren’t paid by show length. They’ll still be “working” the same block schedule/same amount of time while on tour.

If this goes through, It's only a matter of time before there's a proposal for all finalist to get a medal.
Pretty sure all finalist get participation/finalist medals. At least they did 15 years ago.

Ahhhhh ok. I see that. I attempted to comment on their YouTube but they kept deleting my posts. Not sure why, but it's fine. Thanks for the help!
Probably bc they’re too lazy to edit the video and don’t want people seeing their mistake.

Watching on my computer I had some streaming issues. Video buffered quite a bit. Computer is hardlined and I had 220mbps running, so not sure what the issue was.

Congrats River City Rhythm!
Go RCR!!!!!!!

I suppose it depends on which Open Class corps you are looking at.
At RCR this season there were quite a few members with little to no previous marching experience. The members ranged from high school freshmen to a few age outs.
With the price, again, depends on who you are marching with. RCR is less then half of what a World Class corps cost. And I know of places that are just as inexpensive. It's all over the board.
The best thing to do is to just check out a corps or two and see which ones fits you best!

With the launch of WGI's new platform today (that's FREE), how will that effect DCI's Fan Net. Will DCI ever considering offering up their product for free? While I understand the WGI streaming/championships will still cost money, it's great that they are giving us past products for free.

I didn't see a topic on this yet, but if there is one, sorry!

Bluecoats seemed to have toned down the synth and their preseason brass playing recording in their closer in that wow moment of theres from earlier in the season. I liked it better when they had that sucker cranked up louder earlier in the season.
I agree with really digging the synth sound. My understanding is that difference on the fan network for Ft. Wayne and La Crosss was due to the broadcast mic location - not that the synth was turned down. i hope that's the case because I really liked the sound of the full volume and brass together. It's epic and needs to stay that way.
It was cranked up at the Eden Prairie show on Friday! It has to be the positioning of the fan network mics, because I really don't think the corps is messing around with volume on a show to show basis (at least not as drastic as is seems on fan net)

I was thinking the same thing...

Was that the same drill sequence as angels and demons?

And for everyone, please correct me if Im wrong, but Im pretty sure Ryan has been the caption head for the past 2 years now.

I'm talking about the vis staff. And it's not a pile of crap, because some of it happened to a person I'm very close to.
Did you even read my post? i added this little gem, "Now, if we are talking about another section, I am sorry for my confusion. But the 2 instructors this whole conversation has been about have been nothing but amazing in and out of rehearsal." No need to get all offensive...
-
But from what I'm told, they really don't, especially when the public isn't around. I suppose that's all a matter of opinion, but screaming at and berating the kids for mistakes isn't the "professional" way to run a drum corps. Nor is making a member stand out in the rain for two hairs straight holding up a horn for letting a laugh slip out during rehearsal.
Umm This is the biggest pile of crap Ive read on here in a while. In my couple years marching Phantom Ive never once seen this, or heard Paul or JD berate ANYONE!. Now, if we are talking about another section, I am sorry for my confusion. But the 2 instructors this whole conversation has been about have been nothing but amazing in and out of rehearsal.

Word out of Rockford is that none it has to do with the '88 show
-
Does this mean JD wont be touring with the corps any more, and just writing the music???
-
Let's not forget, we also lost Jamey Thompson in 2007 and Nick Scotella after the 2008 Championship. So that's 4 major caption heads/designers in 4 years.
I just want to mention that Jamey left after 07 for family reasons and Nick was gone after the 09 season, not 08.

As an alumni, it makes me sad to see him leave Regiment. But I wish all the best to him over at SCV
-
I think it's going to come down to Bluecoats and Phantom. But I'm going to have to go with Phantom. They've been there before and Rennick knows what it takes this last week of the season to get it down.
Of course, if Regiment places anything lower than 6th, I'd have to say 'coats are going to take it...
