They indeed have put out ballads that I would rank in the top 3 for each of their respective years since 2014. Pretty interesting because prior to 2014 and since 2008 (the year where I think their style really changed to its current iteration), I never thought of BD as a corps with fantastic ballads

wow.  i could never imagine saying that.  guess it depends on how long you've been listening.

And that's highly unlikely IMO. I predict Cadets and Crown will both be top 5.  If Cadets move back up, someone has to come back down though.  And I have no idea which corp that would be

Honestly look at this list.  There are two new names on it.  I know a lot of people (esp. those in team Fla) would like to believe that KP./LM  constituted the entire Crown design team but it's just not true.   In fact it's going to be very interesting to see what that team does without the rest of the names here.   Music is a huge component to the visual design.  It's the canvas on which you write and can strongly affect all the visual captions -- esp. the guard.

    Design Team

    • David Starnes (Design Coordinator)
    • Michael Klesch (Music Director / Arranger)
    • Jeff Sacktig (Visual Designer)
    • Rick Subel (Artistic Coordinator / Choreographer)
    • Ron Hardin (Visual Caption Supervisor)
    • Thom Hannum (Percussion Director / Arranger)
    • Jim Ancona (Arranger - Front Ensemble)
    • Frank Sullivan (Sound Design /Arranger)

I think there are as many questions about Crown as there are for Cadets. Great brass and drill as I said before may get you 4th but a great visual design and guard pops you into top 3. When cadets had a top 2 guard, they had a pretty successful season in 2014. Once that guard slipped even with an OTT award Brass line, the story changed in 2015.

Questions surround both teams?  Absolutely.  More for one than the other?   We will both chose to look at things half-full for one side and half empty on the other:-)  Crown lost visual design and guard.  We lost Tom but the rest of the perc team stayed.  OTOH Cadets needed to reload the entire staff except the guard  (who after last season have to be considered a big question mark).  Basically Hop and Kristy were left :-)

Anyway I think both teams filled all  the vacancies well.

If Crown drops to 6th this season,  I'll agree with you :-)

BK is fairly new with their current design team/stylistic approach. A bit early to be stale but agree his arranging at Cadets was getting redundant. Looking forward to some new energy.

I guess the point i'm making is that arrangers work within the constraints of the design.  Perhaps the design choices were  poor but I don't think I'm ready to point the finger at Jay for that (and his work elsewhere supports this).   IMO Sacktig/Bocook were the absolute best team in drum corps.  But the supporting cast of creatives on the design team all left (for whatever reason).

BK is doing what many consider cutting edge work.

And we Crown honks anticipate amazing stuff from Jeff Sacktig at Crown.

Because there's a great team surrounding each of them.

Will the new team at Cadets produce great work?  Anxiously awaiting that answer.

It's been a bit repetitive stylistically (I'm guessing that has more to do with the ethereal feel they've been going for more than the arranging itself) but not sure about stale. He seems to mesh with BK's style more than he did with the Cadets.

    But what do I know

yeah it would be hard to call BK stale.

There are many reasons staff stay as well as leave corps. Some have had a revolving door with some great people. There are always reasons including money, chemistry among staff, even upper management not allowing the inmates to run the asylum. Perspectives can be very different and depends where one sits. The best outsiders can do is wish all concerned well and move forward.

I agree.   And having heard some of the story from both sides,  it probably was time for a change.  But listening to the interviews was entertaining.

It's just fun to watch the BAC homers all sit up and bark if you mention the word money.  WOOF!

I'm optimistic that this years' Cadets will have more energy. Call me crazy but I found Bocook's arrangements to be getting very stale, I'm excited to see some new blood in the corps.

What do you think the arranging at Blue Knights?  Stale?

It wasn't particularly well received on this forum at the time. But that year I treated a group of fellow employees to tickets to the Massillon show in August, all of them new to drum corps, and while most of them were split between "E=mc2" and "Side by Side" as their favorite, I remember one in particular who just adored this show, starting with the military parade opening.

They were brave enough to do an Americana show that was not overtly patriotic.  I thought it was pretty amazing.

Let's just wait and see.  A dear friend is teaching them this year.  Be kind.

well commenting on a uniform is not quite the same as crapping on the corps.

in fact Spirit was getting pretty good reviews here 2011,12,13.  just sayin' :peek:

Ronald Regan HS used Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" this year at Grand Nationals. From what I remember, it was tastefully done and well pulled off in their show. There was a nice guard uniform change during the hit too. Too lazy to find the link. 2002 Pride of Cinicinatti Winterguard used it as well as their soundtrack. Hoping Colts do well with the piece, assuming they use it.

always think of this version when someone brings up the song.

I think Crossmen, Academy, and Madison are the corps to watch if we're talking about who are the most vulnerable. Blue Stars' captions are too solid as is and they're only improving staff and Boston has the talent and new staff to jump-start the corps from what was a relatively weak season for them competitively.

But then again Academy looks like they'll be just as good as last year, Madison is likely to bounce if they can fix their design from last year, and Crossmen have been relatively consistent lately.

looks like you've got all the angles covered

agreed - hoping this works out for folks as well as it has (in most cases) indoors

the less $$$ corps need to have a base uniform that they can alter for about 3-5 years for the show theme

if you haven't seen the Cadets plan it is quite different to say the least lol

    to say the least :ninja:

BAC is up on field pass (FB) with SCV.

pretty funny to hear all the awkward pauses in these interviews (some on MRT and now here).

Q: So why did you leave XX corps?

    A: <awkwardly long pause> well..er...it was...it was time for a change.  yeah that's the ticket.  time for some cha-ching -- i mean -- change.

of course in real life it might have been more like this .

top corps can easily afford the base and then alter it for 2-3 seasons for the show concept

top corps being the key word.  annual budgets rapidly scale down as you leave the top 6.   depending on how a corps has arranged their uniform renewal cycle,  the switch to printed lycra / spandex may or may not make a lot of sense.

the other item to consider is durability.  how many uniforms need to be repaired over the season?   do you have to keep more uniforms in-stock because the damage is often not repairable by the sewing moms?

lastly form-fitting uniforms can be  a challenge.

will corps choose to use the guideline "this uniform makes ALL of our members look good" or will we see kids unable to march due to body type?

imo the issue is bigger than dollars and cents.

Based on the numbers, I'd say Crossmen would be the ones in the 13th spot.

Over the past 3 years they've been 12th, 12th, and 11th in GE. The over placement rarely strays too far from that ranking.

I don't see Crossmen dropping out of finals based solely on the extremely evident quality of their performers last season  Very mature and polished compared to their nearby competitors.  Unless they really mess up on design,  I don't see the Crossmen moving from their placement.  If anything,  they could be taking a step up in the rankings.    It's a very strong team down there.

I predict that I will be unhappy with a lot of corps' spandex uniforms and pretentious show designs.

the only saving grace to these mistakes will be that the uniforms are much less expensive than traditionally constructed uniforms.  they're not quite disposable, but they're not long term investments either.
