  1. I do not consider that necessiarily true...there are many variables; such as the hornline size itself (10 would be too many for 48 horns, i.e.) ; the style of music done (heavy classical/contemporary calls for darker sounds; jazz more brilliance); and arranging style and depth of harmonics (split contra parts, for example). If your music calls for a lot of power you MUST have the expanded contra line; for there is where the power lies. It also takes more air for a contra than it does a soprano voice; therefore you need to have ample players to cover for breaths on longer phrases; and to maintain the sonority of the sound.

I can see 10 STRONG contras being fine for a 64-man hornline; but my preference would be 12 (20/12/20/12 split in the choirs). When the numbers go up to 150 I would go for 80 horns (24/16/24/16 or 22/16/26/16 for darker/heavier books) and steal 1 from the pit for numbers.

So many more corps are marching more than 12 mellos though a lot 14 .... some 16.

But now you see more 70 - 72 man hornlines. So thats where those extra numbers are coming from.

  2. You know this website never seizes to amaze me. All y'all talk about are the Cadets, or bd, or cavies. Never a corps lower than say 6th place .. then all of a sudden a corps that hasnt gone over like, I dont know 6th place goes away .. the world ends .... Its sucks that esperanza is gone ... but really; do you really care? .. no.

  3. Ok just finished watching all 23 corps. Phew.

    Pioneer

Very dirty. Its cool though that this corps is still very alive ... with actually what seems to be the biggest hornline they've had in a long time. I hope they still keep on truckin'

    Esperanza

Also rediculously dirty. This show didnt have much to it, the members looked really tired towards the end of the show and it shows through the sound. Horrible percusion line.

    Pacific Crest

Fun show could see where they were oing with it. Seemed a lot easier then corps before them on the DVD. I actually would have had them at about 19th or so. Not bad ... for a weekend corps.

    The Magic

Started out really good ... then defenitley let me down. Not good.

    Seattle Cascades

Good guard. Nice show concept as well. Good hornline as well as drumline.

    Southwind

Amazing show! Loved this show one of my favs from this season. Shouldnt have placed that low at all .... I would ahve had them at about 15th or so. We need more corps pushingthe envelope like this corps. Great show!!!

    Mandarins

Small corps. Good show wouldnt have had them before south wind though. Dirty guard drumline not good ... alright hornline for that size. Dont remember much.

    Capital Regiment

Not a fan. Feel like that show has been done before. Thought it was really cheesy. Very good marhcing band show though.

    Crossmen

I actually do like this show took me a little while to get used to it. Neat concept and very fresh idea also. Loved the show.

    Blue Stars

Thought it should win the lamest show award ever. Come on seriously lets have another america themed show. Boring .... the only show I fast forwarded.

    Colts

Great show. Really should have made finals somehow. Good guard.

    Spirit

Fun show. Not bad concept. Good 12th place show.

    Glassmen

Eh didnt get into it. Good and cleanish. But boring.

    Boston

Hahaha also a very good marching band.

    Madison Scouts

    ###### drill kidna dirty but very happy they beat Boston.

    Carolina Crown

Good brass blah blah blah. Easy show.

    Blue Knights

Cool music very mean and powerful, great soloist. Really like the closer.

    Scv

Cool show nice drill ideas. Great brassline.

    Cadets

Best ballad of the year. Actually really like this show. Might make more sense if I was tripping on acid. Other than that. Awesome show.

    Bluecoats

Alright dont really get into bluecoat shows. Bad gaurd. Great other sections though.

    Devils

    Nice show. Very BD

    Phantom

Ill say it ..... should ahve won AMAZING SHOW.

    Cavaliers

Cool dril. Cool moves. Getting boring ... anyone else??

  4. This is a topic for Reviews of the DVD's ... Maybe for coprs members that havent seen the shows til now. Maybe some new reviews from people that saw finals but looked different on the DVD's.

    Mine:

    Disc Three:

Spirit: Very entertaining show. Liked this one a lot. Can definetly see why they were so far ahead from colts. For the most part very clean drill. I remembering hearing the title in the winter seasons and saying this wont go anywhere ... very good.

Glassmen: Although pretty gawdy I liked thegaurd unis. Beautiful tuba solo in the ballad. Not bad on the classical music scene. The song though after the ballad not really that cool ... didnt get into it. Staging and things like that. Over all definetlyplaced where they should have been.

Boston: Eh ... I haventreally liked Boston since 2000's Bolero. I do however remember seeing a BOA show quitelike this one in 2005. Its not really as entertaining as Boston usually is. This was the only show I actually fast forwarded. Just didnt get into it. Not bad drill pretty cool. Gaurd was good. Thats all I got.

Madison: There were definetley a lot of drill issues and phasing. I mean really cool drill and really intense but a little on the dirty side. Cool music ... really enjoyed the opening gaurd blanket things.

Crown: It was tough to see the differences between this corps and BK. Crown seemed to have a really clean show. But it maybe seemed easy to me ... I am sure it was hard to march or play but it seemed like they could have had more. I would state the obvious that they have a great hornline ... becasue they really do. I am a brass player myself but I really dont see how their percussion is holding them down THAT much ... it seemed alright to me ... but obviously not to the judges. Beautiful gaurd. Clean Drill. Good ballad. Neat drillmoves.

Blue Knights: This corps got a lot of crap this season especially after beating crown on finals and being booed. But this is a good show and what seems to be a harder horn book than crown or any previous hornline so far. Really intricate show ... Ifyou havent heard the original ofbarberspiano concerto op. 38 you need to get a hold of acopy its an amazing peice and Bk sticks really close to the original without corpstizing it. Beautiful hornline movement throughout. Good gaurd and coollooking flags. Good show and entertaining .. dosent deserve all the crap it gets from people on dcp. Nicehorn book. Best BK show Ive seen since 2000.

alright havent watched the other discs yet but ... will have a review soon yall!
