Agree 1000%. I ,have seen it all too often...referring to scores or points by a staff member can lead to a lot of problems. The staff and members have zero control over those elements. All they control is their performance. I always tell my kids this at least once a season...

"There are three things that determine your score/placement:

    1) How well you perform

    2) How well the other groups perform

    3) What the judges think

    You only control number 1)."

These three points are very important in life and have applied for me as a businessman.  Only the third point would apply to management in a sense.  Great points MikeD.

A follow up question to all.  Do staff have the responsibility to discuss or teach the competitive aspects of the activity, actually touch on it and talk about it with members or allow for a natural understanding by the members themselves?

2 reasons... 1) what your motivation was... and 2 ) it seems obvious to most ( to me anyway ) that " competition "is a most, fundamental component to DCI Drum Corps. Understood as such, by all. So I did not know where you intended to go with this thread topic.

That said, perhaps you could respond to your own question here, and let us know what your thoughts on it are. Maybe I was a bit too abrupt with my response, and my frustration too easily showed as I was  not sure what you were asking us, and where you wanted to go with this thread topic. So I'll be still now, and allow you to perhaps respond to your own question for us...  so you go...

I had no motive when asking the question.  I was seriously interested to read anyones position on the competitiveness of the activity with each corps culture having different approaches. There wasn't anything nefarious with my intent.

My personal view is that I certainly understand the need to fully develop a given show to it's fullest potential and that the learning experience is paramount, but I do believe that competition and having a competitive edge can be lost at times.  It is a competitive sport.

I'm not quite sure what the OP's question is for us here.  Why would anyone want to pay money to sleep on gym floors, sit cramped in busses, work at practice from sunup to sundown, to then go around the country to do what ?.... 20-30 unscored  exhibitions in a 9 week summer period ? Only totally friendless people would want to do such a goofy group thing as that. 95% of normal kids wouldn't, thats for sure. I would imagine that if we deemphasized the competition aspect of the activity, then the product itself would quickly erode in quality too. Whats the incentive for the perfrmer to get better ? There is none. They are not paid.. If they don't get paid or receive scholies,, and there is no scores, placements, grades, competition, then who cares what your youth MB/ Corps sounds like in Greensfield, Iowa on a hot, humid summer nite in front of people you'll never see again in your life in about another hour ?  I didn't join Drum Corps in my youth to do unpaid, unscored, non competitive, exhibitions for my summers. If that was the offering, I'd have decided to go paint houses to make a buck in my summers, or some such instead. Do 20-30 exhibitions criss crossing the country to towns 1500- 2,000 miles from my home ? No..lol!,... I don't think so... lol.... Nobody I knew in Drum Corps would either. So why is the OP asking us this silly question ?

Why ask what my original question Is, only to write an entire #### page answering the question and providing your feedback?

I asked the question because I was honestly interested in everyones opinion regarding the importance of competition because each corps culture is different regarding the same.

    Geezzz

Alright, I guess I'll be the first 2018 WAY WAY WAY Too Early picks:

    1) SCV- Cause they just have an amazing staff and will dazzle us again.

    2) BD- 2017 was a great show, just a hunch that magic will be harder to replicate, or they'll just win #19.

    3) Cavaliers- Just feels like the Machine has returned. A little better vehicle will get them there.

    4) Crown- Kinda feels like they slipped a bit this year though they medaled (2017) and I personally loved the music. It will be interesting to see what they have in store for 18.

    5) Boston- Yeah these guys will be in the top 3 in a few years with more experience. The staff and corps improvement is mind blowing.

    6) Bluecoats- Such innovation in such a short amount of time, like Crown just feels like they've hit a wall.... so much cool stuff designed in their shows each year, hard tonkeep up that pace.

    7) Blue Knights- 60th anniversary, can't wait to see what they come up with. Honestly BK could have a top 4-5 corps next season if every aspect of the design is spot on. Very definitely a wild card.

    8) Cadets- Kinda felt like they got a bit of a pass this year.... They stepped up, no doubt, but the corps right below them were just about to catch up. They've got the most questions going into the fall I believe.

    9) Phantom- Right path for Phantom just still lacking in design. 2017 was a very difficult book  and drill that the members got at the end, but the design idea was just ok?!?

    10) BStars- likewise to Phantom, with a better vehicle to drive they could be knocking on the top 7-8. Feels like the corps needs concepts to match the maturity of the hornline playing, drumming and spinning going on.

    11) Madison- They really could rise next year or  drop right back out. A wild card, but I think with the growth from mid season to end the Scouts will be a force next year

    12) Crossmen- Harder and harder to move up... Xmen have great corps now year in and out, but need to move design concepts farther forward or be in danger of dropping.

    13) Mandarins- Oh so close again but just short

    14) SCVC- Feels like WC finals is in the future

    15) Academy- Can they recapture the magic of 2016?

    16) Colts- Harder and harder for great quality corps like Colts to move up

    17) Troopers

    18) Genesis

    19) Pac Crest

    20) Cascades

    21) Oregon Crusaders

    22) Spirit

    23) Jersey Surf

i will eat crow next August I'm sure for being way wrong:)

    Wes P

Where did Crown slip?  Third place.  Jim Ott.  Best percussion in many years.  New staff in guard but still top 6.  If that is slipping then wow, what a year 2018 will be

Mm I agree and disagree. I do agree that they perform it so well that it sounds robotic. BUT part of the reason for that IS the arrangements. Crown 2012 had one of the greatest hornlines, and definitely the best of that year, but they never sounded robotic. That's because they were playing music that was technically challenging but was also melodically sound. The technical moments flowed with the music rather than being abruptly interjected.

Think back to 2013 when Crown formed a big line and performed that long run up and down the line. It was impressive, yes. But, how did that make any sense with what was being played before and after? It was done to flex some technical muscle -- an overt self-pat on the back -- but it made no sense.

And since that year, Crown's been doing it a little too often. They did it in their 2014 closer (though they ended up watering it down because it was too difficult with the drill), they did it in Dies Irae in 2015 mid season, and they did it a few times in their 2017 production. I found the 2016 technical passages to be a bit more tasteful.

I want to see a return to the pre-2013 type of arranging that made Crown famous, and it does not look like I'm alone on this.

So, essentially be like everyone else and do nothing to differentiate yourself in brass from anyone else.

IYou are going to need to explain why playing almost technically perfect runs need to be curtailed? While were at It, let's just mic 12 members of the brass line or stand there and play layered whole notes for only 3 1/2 minutes.

Nah.  Crown is in a league of their own in brass and it is a comfortable place to be.  Young people come to Crown Brass each summer to be challenged in just the way you believe should be changed.

  6.  Once again, certain DCP hacks had Crowns placement and success wrong for the sixth year in a row.

AND for the 6th year in a row, I laugh and laugh at their ignorance and complete lack of knowledge about Crown and the activity as a whole.

Congrats to all of the participating corps and their members for a wonderful 2017

  7. Crowns show from the video I saw felt a bit shaky in places.  I imagine all of the changes will take a few shows to refine.

BAC has a great show and I take nothing away from them but as Crown continues to lock in all the show changes and feel better with meter/tempos throughout the closer, Crown will pull away.

BAC 2017 is a far cry better than last season.  Hats off to them!
