Am I the only one who feels as though Crown's hornline is maybe not quite what they have been the last few years?....
YES, You are

Yeah, I've been going to spring training for a few years now at GWU and that's the worst condition I can remember seeing it in.
Great thing that the grass is being replaced with a turf field

Clearly one on here tonight that likes to see themselves post

lets not base too much on one read at the first show with Cadets missing a snare... ok?
So, the line can't execute with a snare missing? Really? Or. Maybe Crown had a strong night?
-
I hope we can avoid a lot of slotting this year. It gets a little old when the placements are nearly the same every show. Hopefully there is some movement up and down to make things exciting.
A dream many of us have had for over 30 years.
-
The gap on the field was about 1 point - it just got swelled by the 5 judge panel. Cadets drums are insane for this early
They aren't as strong as last year and Crown is .1 behind. This is a fact that should have some corps worried.

It isn't a sprint it is a marathon. Crown has no worries. Good show Cadets.

I dont care how many runs you can play. How much double tonguing or triple tonguing. If thats all you do the music will sound the same. I want things i can sing not just runs. I feel like brass has turned into we can play loud and play alot of notes but the notes arent really melodic its just dadadaadadadadadadadada and done.
No, it's Crown can play allot of notes and play them wonderfully, with outstanding pitch and tone quality, and can vary meter and plays dynamically. Yeah, that pretty much covers it

It has a long way to go, but it was a fantastic first run!
-
So I count one concert Bari and one Concert French Horn? That right?
-
There is such a gulf between Cadets and the shows before them it's shocking
-
Cadets' opening statement was more powerful than all of Phantom's show.
Thank You!

George says "By God, if I can't have strings in my corps, I will use the Keyboard" LOL

I like the visual package. In fact, this may be the best visual performance this early in the summer for them since 08'. Brass is a big step up from Cavies. For me the show is just eh. It's June, a theme I will repeat the rest of the night. I thought back battery percussion had a rough run. Cavies were better, and maybe even Troopers in battery performance
-
Glad to see the all black uniform. Wish it was like that the entire show
-
I don't know how the judges saw it but Troopers had a better tone quality and center of pitch than Cavies did. I love the marimba feature as it will be a great moment all summer. Brass had a rough go of it. Let's face it. A MUCH stronger start than 2013! I think the brass will be OK but drill design doesn't relay the theme yet. It's June :)
-
Ouch. Intontation rough in the initial hit. :(
-
Powerful brass sound. America The Beautiful tag in the closer a goosebump moment! Awesome TROOP!
-
Yeah - I got my first frozen video of the season!
Sorry. Spoke too soon. So did I and it didn't go back live
-
I gotta hand it to DCI, they have really stepped up Fan Network. This is just too cool!
-
anything up yet?
-
107Mg speed here at home. Let's do this!
-
1. Carolina Crown - 74.7
2. The Cadets - 72.3
3. The Cavaliers - 70.6
4. Phantom Regiment - 70.2
5. Troopers - 63.1
Scores may be slightly lower but I think you may have the spread dead on
-
These are my predictions:
1. The Cadets (71.25)
2. Carolina Crown (71.10)
3. Phantom Regiment (69.75)
4. The Cavaliers (69.35)
5. The Troopers (64.20)
Bold prediction. It has been A WHILE since the Cadets topped Crown. Won't happen tonight either
Crown's hornline?

I get that this show isn't your cup of tea, bmjfelts1988. It is clear that you feel the show and the performance of the same are it seems over-rated in your eyes. You asked in your original post if it was yourself or is the brass weaker than previous years and I simply answered it wasn't. I answered it was you and the brass isn't weaker than last year.
I must ask was your question rhetorical in nature or were you looking for an answer?
you have been provided well thought out, detailed assessments from several folks about their takes on the Crown brass book and the performance of the same. If you happened to see the show announcement on Youtube from actual members of this years Crown brassline prior to spring training, most all of those members in the announcment confirmed a higher degree of difficulty of this years book compared to last year. one mellophone player actually saying "if you thought last years show was hard, you ain't seen anything yet" or something to that affect.
So, the bottom line is that you asked if it was just you or was the Crown brass line off from recent years?
1) current members indicate it is more difficult than last year
2) for the most part, those who have seen it live indicate a wonderful sound and a much more difficult book than in previous years, including 2013
3) Many fans of Crown and several of those who have been around for a while that are general fans of the activity have determined that the brass book is harder than 2013 and is still being performed and achieved at high levels, especially for June and there is a long way to go and summer ahead.
4) several fans that are clearly honks of other corps have confirmed that Crown picked up where they left off from last summer in terms of difficulty of their book and quality of their sound
so I feel that your question was answered throughout the thread. There are several corps having standout brass performances already this summer and it is just your own personal feelings and not that of the vast majority of people out there that Crown took a step back in brass this summer
