  1. Let me ask for clarity sake; you have ideas for the show but can't land on the music? What ideas would you have that now require music? Props, costumes, flags, rifles, sabers, etc., etc. I ask because I think it is more conventional or typical to determine the musical selections first and develop from there. The music being the starting point. That could then lead you in a number of directions but it first establishes your personality and how your group wishes to be preceived and presented. What is the group capable of? How talented or skilled are they? How teachable are they? What is your end goal? Can the teachers teach it to the group? The worst thing is to come up with a program that the group can't pull off. Best of luck to you. I am sure you can find out a lot from the DCP'ers. Theya re a helpful lot.

Yes, we have show concepts that we are liking and some music to go along with them that we believe our group could pull off, but we are having some problems figuring out additional music, or just some music in general for a few of our ideas. That being said, I'm not looking to DCP for help with choosing music (not that I'm accusing you of saying that), but I was just curious how people go about coming up with ideas or music for their own groups. On the other side though, we have a long list of music that we would love to put on the field but we're having problems putting a decent show concept together. We still have plenty of time to come up with our show, and I know we will eventually get everything worked out, but like I said, I was just curious about other people's process.

  2. I was just curious where show designers/coordinators get their ideas for shows from? I'm mostly curious about musical selections but also want to know about shows as a whole. I'm on staff for a high school group and we have come up with a few show ideas but have struggled with finding musical selections that we feel would fit the shows. We do have an arranger we are working with who has given us some ideas but I just thought I'd ask on here.

(I couldn't think of a better place to ask this question but if the topic needs to be moved, that is fine as well.)

  3. Remember, the judges do not have your actual score of the arrangement you are playing either. Right notes for practice and just in the chord for performances?

Really?.... Since we are just talking about drill, MY personal belief is that in a show, the form takes priority over your dot. But, when cleaning, using dots and trying your best to hit those dots is the best way to help clean the drill and to build consistency in how the drill moves. Again, just my personal belief.

  4. This is the quote that I came up with for the marching band I work for and it seems to work pretty well:

"Dots in rehearsal, forms in performance."

If in a show and almost everybody in an entire line or form happens to miss their dot but the form still looks good, but then you have that one person who goes to their dot and looks to be out of the form, then that one person who goes to their dot will look wrong. Remember, the judges don't know what your drill looks like....

  5. I got married on May 5th, 2012 but we didn't leave for our honeymoon until the day after. We decided to go to Las Vegas because it was fairly cheap (we paid for most of the wedding on our own) and it is close by. We got to the hotel, literally dropped off our bags in the room and headed right out to go and get something to eat because we where starving. Not even 5 minutes after we leave the hotel, we are walking down the side walk and out of nowhere, I see 2 people, one of which is pointing to my shirt and the other just says "HEYYYYY!!!!!" I only marched Phantom Regiment in 2006 but I was wearing my 2009 show shirt. As it turns out, they had marched Phantom Regiment back in the 80's (I was tired and still on my post wedding rush so I don't remember the exact years but the girl marched in the guard, and if memory serves me correctly, they where married). We talked for just a bit and then had to go our separate ways but we did give each other a big SUTA!!!

    I love my Phamily!!!!

  6. OK, now I'm getting concerned. I just went to PR's site to see if there was any shipping update for the 2008 On the Road DVD - its no longer listed on the DVD page!!! The 2007 On The Road is no longer listed either!

Meh... I wouldn't worry about that. It probably just means that they've already sold out!

  7. This whole thing is stupid and I think it's very sad that they have to edit a show that connected with so many people, regardless of whether or not that point in the show is important to the plot.

Situations like this make me wish that if somebody would just prove how many people love this show to the composer, he would just let it be used. I mean, come on, it's a World Championship event!

I saw a run-through in Farmington, UT, the show in Ogden, UT and I have the Fan Network. And yet, it isn't enough. I was way, WAY excited to watch the finals performance and the encore, and while I am still excited to see it, knowing that it won't be the entire performance is sadly turning some people away from seeing some amazing drum corps and supporting the activity.

I am planning on buying the On the Road DVD to see this historic finals performance and to support the corps knowing full well that the On the Road DVD does have the edit.

On a side note, I'm curious how many emails, be them good or bad, the composer in question has gotten on this issue. It seems like the issue is actually out of his control but it seems like some would just think it's all his fault and start sendin the hate mail.

  8. Some of it may have been said and some not but here is my input....

    Breathing exersises.

Buzzing on your mouthpiece, A LOT and making sure that you are in tune with just the mouthpiece alone. This will also help out a ton with your tone.

Work on different articulations in all registers AND dynamics.

Playing while marching, whether or not you know what style they march. I'd recomend watching videos of whatever corps you're auditioning for to get a good idea.

I'd find out what mouthpiece they use and try and get ahold of one of those. I auditioned and played on my normal mouthpiece for the first few weeks before we all got switched to the same mouthpeice. I know some corps have their mello's use trumpet mouthpieces so that would be a good thing to be aware of.

I hope some of this helps and good luck on your auditions!

  9. I was reading the thread about all the different shows that have Malaguena and decided to listen to 88 Madison Scouts! After that I'm gonna listen to a few more but that got me thinking...

How hard would it be to either make your own customized playlist of songs or videos on the FN or have the ability to add songs or videos to a quicklist (like that TUBISH site YOU go to) and then have them play back to back?

    Just curious.....

  10. I'll be at this show tonight!!!! I'm really bad with predictions but I'll say that Regiment breaks 85. If I remember right, it always seems that the corps that come to Corps Encore always have fairly big jumps in their scores.....

Anyways, I can't wait to see Phantom Regiment live tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!

    SUTA!

  11. I'm watching that show right now and it seems to be working fine. The only thing I've noticed is that the icons are more spaced out and so it pushed the video icon under the others, like so:

"APD" "VPD" "Listen the 1979 Guardsmen"

    "Watch the 1979 Guardsmen"

    Hope that makes sense.....
