  2. OK...here's the idea:

Alliance brings back the Grim Reaper and the bell for 2011.

At the start of the corps' show, the Cadets' Little Geoffrey character from 2010 emerges, twirling a rifle or whatever.

The Grim Reaper rings the bell.... Little Geoffrey keels over and is dragged off the field.

    Closure.

Man am I glad I wasn't drinking anything while reading this Fran. I would be buying a new lap top if I had been drinking anything. That was hysterical. Talk about good GE.

  3. Note: The upcoming comment is in regards to statements made by **PREVIOUS** Gold management and in **NO WAY** reflects on the current staff/management or mascot of the field corps.

A number of years ago when DCA South was first cranking up, Gold decided not to compete in the Southern circuit in any way, citing that they were not a DCA South (i.e. Southern) corps. We tried like fire to keep them around, but their staff and management offered that it was much cheaper for them to compete in the NE as a NE corps rather than a Southern Corps (nevermind Shenandoah coming to freaking EVERYTHING since the beginning, and they're further away...but I digress).

They, by their own actions and admission, are not a Southern corps and don't compete in the Southern circuit.

I would LOVE to have Gold in the Southern circuit. I have some good friends and acquaintances in that corps (Yo, Big Country!!!), and we would have some good competition with Gold, SD, and Shenandoah.

As for me, child of a Cajun family, original descendant on both sides and both sets of grandparents, true transplants from Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia; Someone who never heard his great grandmother speak english except when absolutely necessary, living among these Northerners in Georgia is disconcerting sometimes.

"Southern" is relative. I'm sure the folks in Antarctica are having a similar conversation even now.

Fran and Tom: Stick to topics you know. Maryland is like... what, another country? We have to go to some foreign land to compete now, is that it?

Those darned Mason and Dixon Yanks don't speak for deep southerners. :)

(Note: everything preceding this disclaimer is pretty much hyperbole. If you get your panties in a twist about it, I reserve the right to ridicule you openly and talk about your mother. I'm sure I don't know her, but I can make up just about anything)

BOS: How you been? Haven't seen you around in awhile. Been trying to catch you at a show but just haven't seen you. You doin' alright?

Jerald....this is one of the many reasons why I love you!!!! You are too freakin funny!!!! :dontgetit:

  4. I actually work with a woman that is from the stadium neighborhood originally and she said she is surprised that no one has come out and taken a shot at one of the corps while doing one of these concerts. She said it is one of the worst neighborhoods in Rochester. So I am going to say that I am glad the concerts are not going to happen. Besides.....it also means that we can get back on the buses sooner and get home. It's a long 20+ hour ride home.

  5. I just love this time of the year. No one knows how anyone is really doing but I still love to see how people do their predictions. I always come back to the prediction thread to see who was the closest after finals is over. I wouldn't even try as I am of course biased.

  6. Is it even possible to construct a patch larger than the old legion post patch we wore on the old CV uniform? I used to have a photo taken from the space shuttle over Rockmart during our home show and you could actually see those patches. True story...

I remember those patches and they took up most of one sleeve. You could see those patches before you saw the person wearing it.

  7. Hello,

Alliance drum and bugle corps in Atlanta Georgia is currently looking for 2 slightly used Bb baritones and 2 slightly used F mellophones. These horns must be Dynasty and in good working order. If you have these instruments or know of someone that does, please feel free to contact me at 404-226-6722.

    Thanks

  8. Just be yourselves!

In my experience (I've been through two of them) it is not an event where DCA is trying to trick or trap you. In fact, it's more of a give and take. In our experience we learned quite a bit about how others do things in addition to sharing our story.

It's a step in the right direction for your corps. Good luck and have fun!

  9. As our website announcements typically end up on this forum anyway, I have decided to be pro-active and announce ALLIANCE's intention to compete in OPEN CLASS for 2009, which was submitted to DCA management today. This decision was not based on our successes of 2008, but rather a challenge presented at the Rules Congress this past December.

Our original goal for 2009 was to not only defend our 2008 championship title, but to push ourselves to work even harder and design a more-challenging program visually and musically so that we could potentially score high enough in pre-lims to compete in Open Class finals on Sunday evening. This may seem like a lofty goal to many, but it is not the first attempt by a Class-A corps to break into Open Class finals. Now that challenge has been taken away from us and other Class-A corps who strive to be an Open Class corps as our organizations mature and grow.

During the Rules Congress meeting, a member corps submitted a proposal to separate the Class-A and Open Class corps in preliminary competition. The published intent of this proposal was to provide a separate championship for Class-A, as there was a statement by the submitting director that the number of Class-A corps that were aiming for Open Class had diminished. Well, I know of at least two or three Class-A corps that planned to go Open one day and ALLIANCE was one of them. When asked whether or not anyone from Class-A was not in favor of this change, myself and maybe two other Class-A corps voted against this change. Those of us striving to become Open Class corps wanted to have the opportunity to not only compete against our fellow Class-A corps, but also test our mettle against Open Class corps. This proposal was approved by a majority vote by the member corps, all of whom are Open Class corps.

In response, we have been forced to re-evaluate our goals and as such, we have decided to move to Open Class. That said, those individuals wanting to perform in an Atlanta-based Open Class corps now have TWO choices to pick from. We are seeking to fill the last remaining brass positions for the 2009 presentation of "DYNAMO" and should contact me via email - treilley@alliancedrumcorps.org.

  10. I have to put my .02 in here. We were sitting there watching prelims and this older guy comes up to our section between corps and proceeds to have a loud conversation through one whole corps performance. After they were done playing, we looked over and nicely asked him if he would please not talk during the performances. His response was that he hadn't seen this person in over 20 years and he was catching up. I then told him that the performers on the field deserved our respect and that he could talk to his friend in between corps or go downstairs and have a conversation. That seemed to shut him up. Some people just don't get it. You would think older people would understand but apparently not. We had the same problem with a kid from the White Sabers and we had to tell him to shut up. These corps don't spend an entire year practicing their butts off so some inconsiderate person can talk through the entire performance. Geez!!!! :innocent:
