I think the Blue Stars have made the right decisions by hiring Kevin Ford and Michael Shapiro. These additions to the already steller staff should give them the additional adge they need to make World Class finals.

Seriously....Crown 6th in guard.

I would have to disagree on the statement about the majority of the guard audience being participants. Even if every unit had the full 30 members, which most do not, they would not fill the Dayton Arena. World Class colorguard finals were completely sold out and have been for the last several years.

I had this happen a few years ago. The band was taking a trip to Europe and the guard went from 16 to 42 in one year. From a budget perspective you just need to cut corners wherever possible. You can make or buy solid colored silks for much cheaper than more complicated designs. If possible charge the students a costume fee. This will help cover the cost a bit. I found in my situation that my biggest asset was my veteran members. I relied on them to help teach the new students as I could not possibly have done it all myself.
Good luck. I big and inexperienced guard is a challenge!

I will never forget Phantom walking on the field for Semi's in 1996. After a somewhat flat run in quarterfinals you could feel the intensity and emotion coming from the corps as the walked on the field before ever playing a note. I new at that very instant that they were going to give BD a run for the title.

I understood what the concept was supposed to be from reading there website early in the season. I found the soundtrack to be muddled and hard to understand which made the concept hard to read in the Dayton arena.
-
DCI also shuts out some of the lesser known World Class corps in news stories on the web page. A great example of this is the recent article about DCI corps with winterguards at the WGI championships. The article was all about the SCV and Phantom winterguards (both of which were stunning). It failed to mention the Academy (Open Class - Bronze Medalist) and Seattle Cascades (A Class - World Champion).

Was I the only one who did not understand Flanagan's show concept? The kids were very very talented (albeit they had multiple drops / breaks / half catches in finals) I just didn't understand what the floor / soundtrack etc had to do with the concept of post secret.

When the six corps that have gone under in the last few years were active how many people supported them? For many of the corps that we have lost, people (including most on this board) talked about them as inferior to the corps in the top 12 and complained about the product they were putting on the field. Go back and read some of the posts from this past summer regarding Seattle and Southwind and you will see what I am talking about. Sometimes we the fans are the worst enemy of the activity.

I personally found the staff from Odessa to be distracting. I spent the whole time watching them in their silly outfits and listening to them scream, hollar and wimper right behind my seats about every five seconds during the performance. This really took away from what would have other wise been a steller performance by a talented group of kids.

Rankings mean nothing when it comes to WGI. Kennesaw Mountain was perfect example of that two years ago. Going into WGI if you had said they would be anywhere other than dead last people would have laughed.

Go Sonnor!! Love the show!! Absolutely stunning. I will be there to cheer for you guys on Thursday. Hopefully we will see you again on Saturday.

I think the problem with Carmel, at least from what I can see on Replay is that half of the guard spends most of the show playing with pillows and balloons. I all seems a bit gimmicky to me.
-
I don't think you can truly experience Alter Ego's show on Replay. The emotion connection between performers and audience is what makes this show. I saw them live twice and both times was left in awe. The video shot from 100 miles away does not do this show justice.
-
From what I saw on replay I loved Rancho Bernardo. Not what I expected from a Charlie Chaplin show. Absulutely beautiful.

From my dear friend Carol when someone dropped a flag at the Boston regional.
Six feet of pole, five feet of silk, thirty square feet of opportunity.
-
This exact show and concept was performed by St Anns winterguard about 5 years ago and won class A at WGI.
-
The other site that I used was www.gauchopants.com...no I am not kidding.
-
I bought them from www.metrostyle.com just a few months ago for $15 a pair. They have all sizes. I was very pleased with them.
-
Amen to that!!
-
From watching the regional in Salem this past weekend the song of the year is "The Moment I Said It" by Imogen Heap. 3 out of 35 shows used this music.
-
I disagree with your point about WGI charging more for less. In the past we got to see about 1 minute of a select few finalists. Ussually only the world class finalists and the winner of each open and A class. This year they are offering full length clips of every single finalist. I think that $35 is a very cheap price for all of this coverage.

Thanks Mike,
I have always loved Sonnor when you perform to emotional music. I am in awe of the lyrical flag work that you put on the floor.
I must also say that last years show was hot!! The rifle book was so intense. We sat in the front row and watched you guys work it in Dayton. I honestly believe that you should have made finals.
Take care,
Jeremy

Star of Indiana changed uniforms almost every year to fit the theme of their show.
