  1. With all of the G-7 talk from the recent DCI meetings the rule proposals that were discussed this past weekend by WGI have gone un-noticed.

Many interesting proposals including a removal of all rules for the world classes and a removal of the limit to the number of members for an ensemble.

What are peoples thoughts on the WGI rule proposals?

  2. I think SW prelims are not in the Dayton arena this year. So if you are one of the 2-3 guards that does not make the cut for semi finals in SW this year you will not get to perform in the arena at all.

With the size of IW this year...I am in total agreement with you Mike. The more performance opportunities in the arena the better.

  3. The A class sheets are weighted 70/30 towards technique and training....however the judging of that technique and training is still subjective. Once promoted to Open class the sheets are no longer weighted in the same manner. Based on the statistics from 2009 it appears that the transition from IA to IO is the easiest. 5 out of the 6 promoted guards made finals at WGI.

  4. Scores from different parts of the country cannot be truly judged against each other. The only true judgement is when guards see each other in head to head competition.

Ranking websites are interesting but not truly accurate. Not all guards improve at a rate of 2 points per week.

Colorguard judging is subjective. When you take away the subjectivity of judging things get boring. Look at figure skating. The new highly non subjective scoring system has taken away much of the creativity, magic and spark of the sport. It has also encouraged participants to play it safe instead of taking risks.

  5. 1992 - "Amazing Grace", 1994 "The Four Sections" and 1999 - "The Great Divide". Of all the shows put on the floor by Emerald Marquis, these are the three that I feel would still do very well if they were performed in today's world class.

  6. I was at the first Eastern Mass show of the 2010 season. In my opinion a guard to keep your eyes on this year is the A class team from the Blessed Sacrament organization. The show is set to the song "Chasing Cars" with a floor design reminscent of the paintings of Keith Haring. The entire ensemble spins flag, rifle and sabre with the signature training and technique that we have come to expect from the Sac world guard. A giant step up in maturity from previous seasons from the design team and members. This is a show that I can't wait to see over and over and that I feel will do very well in Dayton this year.

Congrats to the Blessed Sacrament organization and best of luck this season!

  7. The A class sheets are written to put emphasis on training and technique and to take away emphasis on innovation. While I think that many guards that did not make finals in A class had more interesting shows, I can see that the guards that were in finals had great technique and training.

Everyone wants to make finals and be on the DVD. In most cases to do so you need to play the game.

In regards to the music clearance issues...I will never for the life of me understand why an artist would not allow a non-profit performance unit from using their music. If anything it is free advertising.

  8. I actually love a really good pretty show.....the problem I am seeing in A class over the last few years is that the majority of shows that make finals are slow and pretty. What I would like is to see a little bit more diversity....some pretty, some fun, some aggressive, some intellectual, some strange all thrown in the mix.

  9. Last year I sat through all of IA prelims. I few guards that I thought broke the mold just missed finals. A few that I thought did not get the credit they deserved were Les Eclipses, St Brendans and the University of Louisiana. I think that the 70 / 30 weighted sheets in class A have taken a bit away from the creativity. Shows written to the sheets make finals....shows that go a bit outside of the norm come close to finals but miss the cut in the end. I will say that the training in the A class has improved...which I guess is the intent of the sheets.
