  1. It looks like most of the proposals are around creating a more even playing field at championships.

Several proposals to bring back double panels at championships. I agree with this. With a single panel one judge has too much power in terms of the results.

Several proposals about how to determine order of appearance at championships. I agree with the idea of a random draw for prelims. The current method of placing groups in blocks based on regional scores promotes slotting. I see this as the biggest problem in the World class. Being placed in block 1 is like a death sentance.

An interesting proposal regarding unit promotions. I could see a system of promoting only during the current season working as long as WGI was aggressive enough and actually promoted units mid season.

  2. I think a good example of this was a friend of mine that I marched with in the mid nineties. I recently took her to a show. She had not been to any winterguard performances since 1999. Her first reaction was disappointment. She felt like she had not missed a single year because it was so similar to when she left the activity.

  3. I would disagree a little. If you look at a guard from 1980 and a guard from 1990 they look drastically different. If you look at a guard from 1990 and a guard from 2000 they look moderately different. if you look at a guard from 2000 and a guard from 2009 they look almost identical.

  4. I got really lucky in the sewing department. I have a sewing mom who actually enjoys making flag silks. The funny thing is that her kids graduated four years ago and yet she continues to sew for us free of charge. She also has a real knack for color and design and offers many valuable suggestions as part of the design process. We are able to cover all of our silks for under $200 a season.

  5. I think what I am trying to say is the high cost of running a guard is not just due to inflation but due in part to our own expectations. National Guard Armories are much cheaper than a high school gym. Paying $40 - $65 for a single flag silk and $125 for a single costume is outrageous. We have so many talented designers and technicians in all parts of the country. Why is it now required to fly in staff from all over the country?

I know that guards have always folded due to financial strains....and that they will continue to do so. What I am suggesting will not solve this but could ease the pain a bit.

  6. Why have hotels become a requirement? Do schools no longer allow guards to house in them. We always stayed at Miamisburg HS during WGI weekend on the band room floor.

Why have charter buses become a requirement? If your guard is small enough rent a large van or two and get everyone to Dayton.

I think members have come to expect a fancy bus, a hotel room, designer costumes and flags etc.

I can remember going to the local fabric store and determining what color scheme we were wearing / spinning based on the fabric on the clearance table...and this was a world class finalist guard.

  7. I agree that the cost of putting out a world class guard has become a bit out of control. I think a lot of that is self induced. What happened to the days of guards sewing their own costumes and silks? What happened to staffs that were local and volunteered their time out of a love of the activity? What happened to guards car pooling to shows and sleeping on the floor, or at someones house?

In this era of high priced costumes and silks that come from a catalog, staffs that fly in from all over the country, flights to shows and staying in hotels it is no wonder that people can't afford to keep a guard afloat.

  8. Here are my suggestions for promotion, solely based on what I saw in Dayton from a design and performance standpoint.

    from IO to IW.

    Automatic promotions:

    Rhapsody

    Opus 10

    Juxtaposition

    Ars Nova

    First Flight

    I would also promote:

    Interplay

    North by Northwest

    from SO to SW

    Automatic Promotions:

    Marian Catholic

    Legacy

    Pope

    Mechanicsburg

    South Brunswick

    I would also include:

    Gates Chili

    Valencia

    West Johnston

    from IA - IO

    Automatic Promotions:

    State of Art

    Salem Blue

    O2

    FIU

    Americas

    Idendity

    Usurpation

    Elizabethtown

    Aureus

    River City

    I would also include:

    Central Independent

I would leave SA at the top 15 finalists.

  9. I watched the entire day of IA prelims on Thursday and found the class to be very entertaining and was impressed with the depth of talent. Come finals I was a bit surprised that almost every show in the top 15 was a slow ballad. I found finals to be very boring. I wish that more credit was given to uptempo and unique shows in this class. This in no way takes away from the talent in the guards in finals, it is more a comment on song choice.

For me the show of the weekend was both IO prelims and finals. This class is so strong from top to bottom. In my opinion they could have taken about 30 guards in finals.

  10. I emailed the folks at WGI about 10 years ago and requested access to historical prelims scores in order to start a site similiar to corpsreps. What I was told is that the information is stored in boxes and is not organized. I was told that if I was interested in spending the time I could have access to the information. It would make an interesting project......

  11. I was curious about how well the new promotion process worked from 2008 - 2009. Here are some status. Based on this it appears that independent groups handle this transition much easier than scholastic units. What are peoples thoughts on the current promotion system and what changes would you make going forward.

Guard promoted from Scholastic A to Scholastic Open

    15 guard were promoted

    11 attended 2009 championships

    3 made semi-finals

    2 made finals

1 moved to Scholastic World and came in 17th place

Guards promoted from Scholastic Open to Scholastic World

5 guards were promoted and all attended 2009 championships

    1 made finals

Guards promoted from Independent A to Independent Open

    10 guards were promoted

    6 attended 2009 championships

    5 made finals

Guards promoted from Independent Open to Independent World

5 guards were promoted and all attended 2009 championships

    2 made finals

  12. Please join your local judges association and go through the certification process to become a judge. Then go through the WGI certification process and become a WGI judge.

Once everyone who complains about judges has taken over the role everything will be perfect and everyone will always agree with the results of each contest.

  13. If the subcaptions were consistent from show to show everyone would still be yelling conspiracy, slotting etc etc etc. I personally was glad to see some movement in every class from prelims to finals. It proved that the judges were judging what they saw on that day and not basing their numbers on those previously given by others on different days.

  14. I was taught my Mike Sloan waaaaay back in the mid nineties. I can tell you that he can write a rifle book line no one else I have worked with. Not sure about his flag or sabre stuff but if you are a rifle you will love working with Mike.
