Bacchanale, Samson et Dalila, Phantom 1991.
No.

After the 2009 season i think BD and Crown have a little rivalry going on
Aren't rivalries based on some level of competitive balance with each side winning occassionally? Has Crown ever beaten the
Blue Devils?

This sparked a new idea....
As a possible ad campaign (using the physically fit as a theme) one could run an ad campaign about Drum Corps that is more out of the box/unconventional?
Where would these ads run? How much would the ad campaign cost? Who's the audience? What's the message? What's the desired result?

When a man loves a woman with a Michael Bolton voice effect on the synth.
Not just no but hell no Michael Bolton.

I wouldn't mind a return of Jesus Christ Superstar. How long has it been since a top 12 corps like Madison (that sounds good doesn't it) has done a Broadway based show?
Cadets 2009 West Side Story.

I think BD missed an opportunity to do 12-tone music this year seeing as they had 12 championships going into the year. To some people's ears (not saying mine), they were close enough anyway as it is
You'e off by a year. BD had 13 championships going into this year and now 14 heading into 2011.
-
Just for the record, BD is the only corps to finish in the top 4 in brass each of the last five years, winning the caption three times and finishing second once. Crown and Phantom have three finishes in the top 4 and Phantom has finished 6th the last two years.

Garfield 84. Musically mildly interesting, but the drill is very unattractive. NOT the mold-breaker everyone seems to think it is IMO.
Totally agree. Had heard so much about this legendary show and then when I was it a few years ago in one
of the Countdown theater shows I was hugely disappointed. Couldn't figure out what all the acclaim was about.
RE: Crown 2007, not a boring show. Definitely a cheesefest, but not boring.
-
2007 was, as I and others have maintained, STILL one of the finest units ever fielded in drum corps history. And I maintain that it took 2007 BD to snag the Championship from 2007 Cadets. A little less energetic performance by BD and this thread doesn't exist.
2007 was a very good show for the Cadets but BD was clearly better that year winning quarters, semis and finals. The Cadets problem that year wasn't too much energy by the Blue Devils, it was too much narration by the Cadets. Get rid the annoying narration and that show could have won.

I guess what we need to boil down, then, is what exactly BD did the last two years that other corps aren't / didn't.
Win.

Mahler's 8th.
Going from Symphony of a Thousand to Symphony of 150 but I like the recommendation. Great piece of music.
-
Could you elaborate? Allowing, of course, for the problem of a given audience having a disproportionate number of home fans for any one corps, why shouldn't the opinions of those who pay to be entertained by the shows be given more consideration?
If that was the case then the Bridgemen and Velvet Knights would have won a bunch of championships.

Cavies took 1st 5 times this decade, BD only 3. Oddly enough, they both placed 3rd and 4th exactly the same number of times (2 3rd places, 1 4th for each).
And 2010 is not part of the 00's decade, so we're starting over now.
Decades run from years ending in 1 through years ending 0. The calendar started in year 1 AD, not year 0 so the first decade ran from 1 AD to 10 AD., etc.
So the Cavies have won 4 titles to BD's 3 with the a potential fourth of the decade for the Devils or fifth for the Cavies coming tonight. The Cavies 3-peat doesn't count for this decade since one of those wins occurred in the previous decade.

Wrong forum. THis should be in Open Class,
-
Regardless, still on the verge of something center.
Absolutely. Back-to-back perfect seasons and being less than 0.3 from three in a row and a 4-peat is an exceptional achievement.
-
They really are on the verge of something special: two undefeated seasons, and in three seasons losing only 1 show (albeit the most important one).
BD lost twice in 2008. They lost to the Cavies at Allentown by 0.25 and then at finals to Phantom by 0.025.
-
Also, is this the highest a corps has been pre-quarterfinals?
No, it's not. BD is at 97.05. Santa Clara and Garfield tied with a 97.1 at the US Open a week before finals in 1985.

1. emotional reaction - does it appeal to your gut? Does it evoke a range of emotions?
2. engagement - does it consistently hold your attention?
3. communication - is it clear what effect the performers are trying to achieve?
4. memorability - does it stick with you?
5. audience reaction - not just intensity, but whether positive or negative.
Interesting but maybe too subjective to be useful.

What criteria would you propose for evaluating EV?

The organization has been based in Alabama very recently, and used to be associated with Jackson State University in Northeast Alabama.
Spirit was associated with Jacksonville State University in Alabama. Jackson State is in Mississippi.

Scores as of 8/3
1 Blue Devils : 95.6
2 Carolina Crown : 93.1
3 Bluecoats : 92.8
4 Cavaliers : 92.4
Your top four scores are wrong. It should be:
Blue Devils 95.65
Bluecoats 93.75
Crown 93.15
Cavaliers 93.1

90's - 91 Star. Again, not a fan but they raised show design to another level.
I have my doubts about this one. Was Star 91 really a departure or a refinement of what they unveiled in 1990?

As far as college sports are concerned though, its gone way beyond its original intent.... equal scholarships doesnt mean you are meeting need equally.
There's nothing in the Title IX regulations that requires equal scholarships or equal expenditures.
