  1. Really? Or is that from the list of corps at the show from dci.org?

They did go on after the cavies this evening but that is not a hinderance. Going on early is really hard on your scores so the later you can go on the better. Cascades dropped tonight becuase they were WAY overscored last night. They deserve to be right where they are.

  2. Troop over Cascades?? I'd be shocked it that happened. It will be close though I'd think.

I feel cascades show if a bit more demanding and being performed at a higher level right now.

Prepare to be shocked then...Troop wins tonight for sure

Scades visual book is so dirty and their brass line sounds really rough. It was hard to tell what they were playing half the time

  3. I don't understand where some of you are coming from? You are knocking a horn line that finished 4th behind 3 GREAT brass sections. A brass section that scored a 19.0 (95/100). If you feel BD had so many problems, I can only imagine what you must be thinking about the brass sections of the 19 corps that finished below them.

Is it possible BD is being held to a higher standard than any other corps?

The placement of the brass line is not what concerned me nearly as much as the sound of the brass line. I am ok with BD finishing 4th behind the brass lines that beat them this year because those brass lines were amazing. What did concern me was the sounds that were jumping off of the field at times. Just the intonation problems alone were enough cause for concern IMO.

As far as the question about BD being held to a higher standard I think it goes both ways. There are times when I feel that people expect way too much out of BD becuase they compare them to the excellence of years past. This is obviously not fair to BD, but at the same time I do feel like they get a free pass sometimes as well. So, I believe thier past dominance in brass can serve as a double edged sword when it comes to how they are judged and percieved.

  4. Who was the previous barss caption head before? My understanding was that John Meehan has been a caption head for them for quite some time, and he's the only one listed as caption head on their website.

Well Wayne was the caption head before that. john was not named caption till last year. When Gino was there he was the main brass tech when wayne was gone (which was often). Gino had a way to make the horn line play like no other.

  5. From what I understand from the BD forums, a similar thing happened on 1998. They lost a lot of the good "lead" people from the 94-97 years and had a slightly down year despite a very good music book. However, they came back incredibly strong in 1999.

Yeah I was around in 98 and the brass line was definately down that year, BUT BD still won brass. I have even heard people list 98 as their favorite brass line of all time. While 98 did not have the talent that 97 did they still sounded great by the end. This year is a different story.

I do think that the visual demands may have accounted for some of it, but there were times when they were not flying all over the field that they sounded a bit rough. I guess what I am getting around to is they changed brass caption heads last year and since that change they have finished 4th both years.....Is this a coincidence?

  6. you really cant hear it?

to me it seems darker and louder...

I guess the scoring is a little bit different, but I still dont think that was the reason they sounded the way that they did. I mainly just hear a lot of intonation problems. It sounds a bit like they were overplaying (hence the intonation issues).

  7. 2006 Cadets Ballad...from season 5 of the West Wing. Season Premiere Episode entitled 7A WF 83429

I knew I had heard it before.

Yeah I mentioned this a couple of days ago on a thread about the ballad. I thought it was from the episode "25" though. I guess I was one episode off...oh well

I thought it was perfect for the episode with the bartletts standing in front of the window in the residence and people holding candlelight vigils for zoey. That scene would not have worked nearly as well if it was not for that song. I am too much of a West Wing nerd

  8. Lets not forget that this year they went for a different sound. they usually dont sound so deep... lots of bottom noises this year, maybe they just had trouble adjusting...

really? I dont hear a difference in the wind scoring in comparison to years past....but even if there is I dont think it should matter. Good brass playing and good pedagogy should transcend a book that is scored in the lower register

  9. Thank you for reminding us, Krista. Perhaps you could remind everyone else how ####in sweet The Cadets were this year too? Please?

    Dude

I have been defending the cadets/amps/vocals quite a bit on this forum but I must say that you are losing credibilty very fast.

  10. ....but I can't imagine them placing so low next year.

Neither can I....but I also cant imagine Cavies, PR, Bluecoats slipping either. Also, I would not ever count out the Cadets for top 3 in brass (especially with Gino at the helm). 07 should interesting....

  11. Still I think they should have been in the top 3 brass wise, which is pretty good considering the competition.

I would not have put them in the top 3 in brass but I was also not downstairs (or even at the show for that matter) but I would definately agree with you in the fact that the competition was great this year. I think that evening out of the talent pool may be part of the reason that other corps have caught up to BD in brass in the last few years.

  12. I just got done watching the ESPN broadcast (thank god for Tivo) and the most surprising thing to me was BD's brass line. I knew that they got fourth in brass but I was still really surprised at how they sounded at times during their performance. Now I know that the talent of the performers is as good or better than any other corps out there (including past BD hornlines), but the level of execution that you usually see from them simply was not there. Missed releases, poor attacks, and some moments that were painfully out of tune have not been trademarks of a BD Hornline.

    So, my questions are:

    1. Did anyone else here on DCP hear what I was hearing?

    2. If so, what are your opinions as to why this was the case?

    3. After finishing 4th in brass in back-to-back seasons is there any cause for concern? (i.e will there be some staff changes made)

  13. BDB does not use a Dr. Beat.

But we do use another metronome. It's a Korg or Roland I believe. Our DM also had a really cool mini clip-on metronome that he could clip on his ear or hat. Had all sorts of subdivisions and cool stuff on it too. I think he lost it though.

The term "Dr. Beat" in relation to drum corps refers to any metronome that is hooked up to a loud speaker

  14. For accuracy ?? to use crowd reaction in ones argument ?? you better believe it. People can appear high and mighty from behind their computer screens and never attend one single show.

    Its called credibility.

Had Mr Davis been at the same amount of shows I was, he would know for a fact Cadets show didnt go over as well as he wi#### might have. Same thing by reading the reviews here and looking at polls, but he will dismiss that as DCP is not a big part of reality, hence the refernce to the amount of shows he attended.

    ~G~

I dont think credibility has anything to do with the number of shows one attends.

  15. Actually....I know a lot of high school kids through the marching band arena. To them the Cadets are a laughing stock. I could tell them about how this corps did great things for our activity in the 1980s....but I figured not to bother. :)

    Really?

I work for over a dozen bands around the country and I have never heard this sentiment. That is over a thousand kids from all around the US and none of them have ever suggested that cadets were a joke. To be honest with you I have seen more cadets merchandise being worn by these kids than any other corps in dci. I never marched cadets and I dont usually like their shows as much as other corps but I would not ever consider them a joke. I apprecate what they do bescause it IS different.

  16. wait... OMG... are you saying that OTHER corps have had difficult times and staff issues in the past that they have overcome and gone on to be successful again???

You mean... you mean to say... ARE YOU SAYING... that Madison's issues this year aren't the FIRST ones to be difficult and seemingly bad in corps history??

And Blue Devils didn't FOLD because of the staff issues and members quitting??

OMG... it's a miracle!! I have been thinking lately (given what I've read about "similar" recent situations...) that any corps having issues like the one's you elude to

    are doomed to die.

    THANK GOD there is hope...

Very true. I have been saying on these boards that Madison will be fine and I truely believe it. IMO the only thing that could really get them in trouble is major financial woes....which they appear to have none
