  1. 2000 was the first year that Blue Devils used Dynasty percussion equipment after the switch from Yamaha. Methods of Madness was an EXCELLENT show. But, the sounds that the drumline was producing was horrendous and I'm not talking about the performers. Really happy to hear over the years that Dynasty has improved the quality of sound on their equipment. Just listen to the drumline closely during the entire show and compare it to the Cavaliers and The Cadets. Clear different in the sound of the equipment.

  2. I have no idea what exact music Churchill is playing, but I'm guessing the title of their show, and a good portion of the music, comes from Danny Elfman's Serenada Schizophrenia. BD played some movements from it this past summer.

    Winston Churchill's music included:

    Meditation - Samuel Barber

"Gallop" from Fancy Free - Leonard Bernstein

Symphony No. 1 - Samuel Barber

Medea's Dance of Vengeance - Samuel Barber

  3. Lame.

DCI isn't BOA (yet) . . .most of the time electronics just cover up for lack of musicianship or endurance on the part of the high school program. Nothing I've ever heard from Plymouth-Canton has stood out to me in the past few years, really.

Which shows have you seen from Plymouth Canton? Don Hill was PCEP's music arranger from 1994-2005. I highly recommend watching any of Plymouth Canton's shows from 1998-2001, L.D. Bell 2005-2007, and The Woodlands 2006. All masterpieces.

  4. I'm still debating whether to attend BOA Nationals. I went to eight in a row, but the last time was in 2004. With the Colts yet to win a game of any kind in the new stadium, BOA might be the best show to catch there until DCI next August!

    Matt,

Please go! It's shaping up to be another strong year at Grand Nationals.

L.D. Bell (TX) is coming for a third straight year and is back to defend their national title. Broken Arrow (OK), Tarpon Springs (FL) and Kennesaw Mountain (GA) are back again. And, strong showings so far from the Indiana bands at the BOA Sound Check at Lucas Oil where first-third place was seperated by .65---Lawrence Central (78.95), Avon (78.85) and Carmel (78.30). Lawrence Central won no captions. Does 2001 Grand Nationals ring a bell?!

    Can't wait.

  5. Ronald Regan (sp?) HS has many crossmen staff members. They won BOA a couple years ago.

    Just to clarify....

Ronald Reagan HS has won numerous BOA Regional Championships and placed second at the Grand National Championships in 2003 & 2005.

But yeah, Reagan's staff used to consist of Mark Chambers (Head Director), Kevin Nix (Assistant Director/Visual Director) and Aaron Guidry (Music Design). This year's staff includes J.D. Shaw as their music arranger and Mike Sloan as their visual designer.

  6. While I understand this is just DCP...I am kind of shocked at the number of people who seem to be so closed minded about the performing arts in general. Both DCI and BOA have great things to offer. There are programs in both organizations that offer great product and great education along with something for the fans...just as there programs that would be just the opposite. I'm not suggesting that we all should like both, because we all have our likes and dislikes. Some corps in DCI make me want to go to get a hot. The same thing happens in BOA. Just as there are some outstanding performances in DCI, there are great ones in BOA as well. The activity is not soooo different that we cant respect what each attempts to accomplish...and enjoy it along the way.

    Agreed 100%.

  7. I can't wait until MalletKats hit the field for drum corps. I've heard and seen them over on the field for marching band over the past few years at the Regional and Grand National level at BOA and I love them...especially by the upper echelon bands--moat notably Ronald Reagan HS, TX during their 2001-2005 years.

    GREAT instrument.

  8. Today, while watching my Best of the 90s VHS tape, a thought struck me, "What happened in 1996 after the first ever tie for 1st place? What was the atmosphere like on finals night? Did anyone have the thought in their head, immediately after phantom's performance, that they may have a shot at 1st?"

Basically I just want to know, how did everyone react, both those in attendance at finals, and those who weren't. Were there boos, was there insane celebration?

... also. Does anyone know how to come get a hold of a video of retreat from '96? I do not own any VHS finals other than the one listed above. Was retreat and the reading of scores placed on the finals tapes?

    Thanks

Go to YouTube and search "DCI - ties"

When the search results come up, go to the video that says "1996 DCI Finals Scores Announcement"

  9. A full point different between the drum judges in Allentown Friday for Bluecoats?!?!?! Really??? I know and respect Jeff Prosperie, but who is the other guy? If someone knows, please let me know. I do no want to bash someone I have no info on.

Steve Ulicny is a former Bluecoat, a native Ohioian, and is currently an assistant intermediate band director in Texas.

A 1996 graduate of Kent State University in Kent, OH where he studied with Michael Burritt for percussion and Dr. Wayne Gorder for Instrumental Conducting. Steve has been involved with bands since the age of 13, when he joined the Warren Junior Military Band. Starting in 1988 Steve began his Drum Corps career with the Bluecoats of Canton, Oh where he stayed until 1990. 1991 proved to be a very good year; he joined the Star of Indiana Drum & Bugle Corps from Bloomington, IN where he stayed and aged out in 1993. Once Steve aged out of drum Corps he then turned his attention to the Music Educational aspect of the activity and accepted a staff position with the Glassmen, Troopers and the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps before moving to Texas. He was the former Band Director and Percussion Specialist at Sugar Land Middle School and Stephen F. Austin HS in Sugar Land, Texas, and is currently the Assistant Director at Beverly Hills Intermediate in the Pasadena Independent School District in Pasadena, Texas. He is an active Adjudicator for Winter Guard International and a Judge for Drum Corps International. Steve serves on the ProMark Educational Advisory Board as well as an Educational Endorser and has several published articles posted through ProMark Percussion.

  10. Anyone else have an opinion on the Indianapolis Bucca di Beppo?

I went there during BOA Grand Nationals last year since a friend recommended it to me. I was disappointed by the food. Great service...but the Downtown Indianapolis location isn't up to par like some of the other Bucca di Beppo locations that I have been to.

  11. YOU couldn't be more wrong. You must have been at a San Antonio that exists in a parallel universe. Crown and Phantom got by far the biggest ovations...........

Where did you sit? I was in the upper deck and the crowd went nuts up there. No one is wrong. Maybe it depends on where you were sitting....

  13. MBUI - I like that avatar! I feel obligated to stop at Bucky's every time I drive to San Antonio! (I'll be stopping tomorrow for jerky!)

Haha. Please do! I work at the huge Buc-ee's store in Lake Jackson in Brazoria County. The Luling store is a great one though. But be prepared....Buc-ee's is building a store the size of a Wal-Mart in Madisonville, Texas north of Houston on Interstate 45. It's going to be 5 times the size of the Luling store on I-10. It opens later this year in November or December.

  15. Back to business. There is a show, right? Does anyone know the prelim order and how many corps compete in prelims?

OK. Back to the BBQ talk. :w00t:

The Prelims order won't be determined until sometime this week. Also, the 9th place-20th place corps compete in Prelims. The top four corps from Prelims advances to Finals.
