  1. LOL!! May be the best post of the season for me

    lol.

i though vanguard got too big of a pass for doing Yet Another Four Seasons show. sure it was done well and the drill was wonderful. but honestly nothing special in that show unless you just want to get all googly-eyed about SCV. (which clearly many DCPr's were willing to do)

les mis, scheherezade ? haven't really liked a show concept since the Devil's Staircase. come on design team, give the MM's something fresh and new!

all of these rehashes -- it's kind of like doing West Side Story. sure you can make it work. but where's the creativity?

  2. Oh wait! Forget it. I agree with everything you say. You're right! :)

And to return the sentiment, as a longtime BD fan, I thought Crown absolutely deserved high guard. I was there, and they were flawless. I was surprised to see the finals guard numbers. Show kicked butt too.

Honestly, I wouldn't change anything. I like that this forces the design teams to play to the crowd. This came from a discussion with my wife last night. She is not a drum corps person, and trying to explain how the corps are adjudicated got us into s lengthy conversation, which ultimately ended in an argument. Ugh. I can't win at home, I can't win here.

Maybe this will help - I LOVED BD's SHOW LAST NIGHT.

    😳🙃🙂😄

  3. I see where you're coming from .... sometimes I miss the ole tick system that went away after ... I think 1983? My point is that all sub-captions measure based on design. So the compositions/arrangements are judged in brass, MA and percussion. Drill in VA and VP, etc. not just a GE caption thing.

So you're actually reinforcing my argument. The "what they're doing" is driven by the vehicle (show) they're given. If a corps is given a bad show to perform, no matter how much they clean it, they most likely will not have the opportunity to win. Not saying this is good or bad, it is what it is, but it makes the competition aspect even more subjective.

  4. I don't think you quite understand the judging categories. Each category, not just GE, is evaluated both on "what" the performers are doing as well as "how well" they are doing it. Brass, Percussion, visual performance break out into Content (what) and Achievement (how well). Check out the actual judging sheets.

Adding up the technichal captions from last night:

    1. Crown 59.238

    2. Blue Devils 58.375

    3. Bluecoats 58.225

Just an observation - this suggests that we are no longer an activity that awards the kids strictly on the merit of their shows, rather, the creative teams on the merit of their design. Of course it takes a great group of kids to execute the design. Question becomes, should we be putting so much emphasis on GE (40% of the overall score) or should we be giving more emphasis to execution? I don't have an agenda, just thought it would be an interesting discussion.

  5. Judges just aren't buying what Thom Hannum is writing.

It's musical as crap, makes use of space and is amazingly coordinated in ways other books aren't, but they apparently want something different. They need someone willing to RAM THE NOTES whether or not it makes musical sense or not. In what other caption does the judge dictate content like that? (answer:none)

And they need to change. Because it's dragging down one of their biggest strengths (Brass and MA).

Maybe have Aungst write the battery book? I dunno.

The thing that bothers me about this is this:

If a guard is 5 or 6 places behind the corps, other visual captions can't help but notice and it will push their captions down too.

If a brass line is having trouble, that trouble will spread to all the other music captions.

If a musical effect doesn't work, the visual effect guys will notice and vice versa.

But apparently in percussion, a line can suck but apparently NO ONE ON THE REST OF THE PANEL is capable of noticing. I guess all those other musicians on the panel are deaf and can't hear the terrible weakness. Or they just know NOTHING at all about percussion.

Because of this drummers end up calling the whole show. Because they're perfectly fine with calling large spreads in a caption that is -- in the grand scheme -- just a "specialty" award. Even the percussionists admit that most of the battery book can only be "read" if you're right on top of them (or falling over them). Otherwise you just can't tell. So the audience and the rest of the judging panel are over-ruled by things no one can see or hear.

</rant over> and it is a rant. i'm not gonna argue. too bad for you.

I'm not sure if I understand ... give Carolina SCV's 1st place percussion score, and Crown's score inches up .3. Ahead of BD, but still not winning. So how, in this case, does this mesh with "drummers end up calling the whole show"?

  6. Wow! What a year! Congratulations to Bloo!!! Being there tonight, you could tell. True innovation! BD ... What an amazing performance tonight and ongoing run ... And 6 golds and 4 silvers for the last 10 years. True sustained excellence! Crown -- best third place show I've ever seen ... And hearty congratulations for breaking BD's 8-year high CG streak. Again, being there, you could tell. Special mentions to SCV. .. Beautiful and Cavie .... Back to form!

And ... Academy! Welcome to finals!

    Awesome season!!
