  1. It's been the funniest thing reading as so many of you get your undies in a knot. If this announcement had come out from The Cadets, someone would have made the same comments I did and there would be dozens of people writing in agreeing. But because it is written about the Bluecoats, it's blasphamy. Get the point?

You defend the corps you want to defend no matter what they do and you criticize the corps you don't like (or the corps whose directors you don't like) no matter how good the deed they do. There was more negative reaction to the possibility that The Cadets would play the Elergy than there EVER will be about the Bluecoats show concept.

Something is very wrong with this planet we call DCP!!!

    No, something's wrong with you.

  2. You may be referring to the Chicago Tribune book review section from a few weeks ago. They reviewed the book "American Band," which is a year-in-the-life look at the Concord High School marching band in Elkhart, Ind. The book is excellent, not only delving into what makes a successful marching band, but also looking at the kids, the directors, the parents - just about anybody involved in a great band program.

Or this one on Mitch Rogers

  3. With the timely hiring of Mr. Jeff Wroblewski, hopefully we can "stop the bleeding" this year from a visual design standpoint, and move forward in the visual design area. Jeff is a student of Mr's. Brubaker and Zingali, with drum corps history in the Cavaliers, and Star of Indiana.

In defense of last year...I really would like to thank the guys that were forced to finish a product and for sure they did the best they could. Bobby Patrick filled in the gaps admirably, but it was a tough job to do.

    Donny

    Jeff wrote Bluecoats 1999 right?

  4. A lot of corps do it the same way Regiment does. Really, I can't think of a high brass line that doesn't cover theirs on the top.

When it comes to low brass, I had a hard enough time popping that euph with my hand inside, let alone if I had to jam it in there really quick to get that thing up (it was always a struggle coming up from parade trail to horns up).

I agree with the sentiment that it's a 'to each his own' sort of thing.

Now, let's get really picky - how high do the different corps carry their horns when they're down - what part should be at eye level. :)

I don't think Vanguard, Glassmen, or Bluecoats do it. Maybe Spirit too?

I like the uniform look myself for consistency.

  5. defensive.

well to clarify, who has he arranged for in the past? i hadnt heard about him in that context.

    from dci.org...

"Dean Westman marched with the Cavaliers in 1991 and 1992, taught the corps in ’93, ’94 and ’95, was the Santa Clara Vanguard brass caption head from 1996-1999 and that corps’ arranger 2000-2002. He served as brass caption head for the Cadets in 2003 and 2004."

  6. So, on DCI.org, there's an article about how a member of the Bluecoats front ensemble was on the gameshow "The Price Is Right." At the bottom of the article, there's a link to a video of the episode, and when I click on it, it takes me to the video page, but then it just shows me a picture of Drew Carey and says that the video is stopped, and it won't play. Is anyone else having this problem?

    Here's the article:

    works for me

  7. How is this any worse than for BOA Regional and Finals when school is ACTUALLY is session and football season is in playoffs and other sports are in full swing and 100 or so bands come to town?

Because most of those bands are not staying at schools, practicing 8 hours a day on a field and sleeping in the gym. They're, for the most part, staying in hotels and performing their shows at the dome.

It's much different then the DCI situation.

  8. Where is the evidence that many of those who audition for World Class level corps will march Open Class if cut, or even lower placing World Class corps? There have been many threads over the years bemoaning the fact that those cut do NOT go on and march with what they would see as a "second tier" corps.

Exactly, I can't speak for every corps, but I've been involved in the past in auditions for a drum corps where hundreds are cut. When cutting these kids, they're encouraged to march somewhere else. I would say no more than 5% of those kids would even entertain the notion of going to a open class or lower tier world class corps. Everyone has their goals on where they want to be. Not marching in that dream corps and staying home to make money is the usual decision.

These extra 15 spots won't hurt the smaller corps. If your drum corps isn't good enough to attract enough people, then the solution is to get better, market yourself better, so that people will actually want to march there.

  9. Nothing comes for free, that's a long-standing drum corps myth. People think that "sponsorship" = free equipment. Reduced prices, sure, but nothing is free, and it's still a lot of money.

I know for a fact, a corps in the top 12 last year got their uniforms for absolutely nothing. Deals like that do exist. I've been involved in drum deals that have worked the same way...free.

I'm not saying that Southwind got anything for free, but those deals do exist. Just not for every corps out there.

  10. No cut off age in WGI? Is that correct? I thought there was one? Can't find the rules on the website.

There's no age limit for WGI Independent World Colorguard.

There's still an age-limit for Independent World Percussion.

You can march as long as you're not 23 before April 1st. So you can age-out at 23 if you turn 23 on or after April 1st.

I wouldn't mind DCI matching the percussion age rule, but I think there should still be a limit.

  11. I am trying contact any and all members from the Arizona Sun Drum and Bugle Corps. YES!!!!!!! I know the corps does not exist anymore but I figured with everyone that is out there, all the people still affiliated with DCI....SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE has to have names of former members, board members, staff, volunteers..............anything would help.

I am trying to put together a list in the hopes of planning a reunion.

Please send any information you may have to

    AZSUNREUNITE@YAHOO.COM

    thanks.

There's already a thread on this here.

  12. I'm a DCP noobie, i know, but been reading a while this last semester, hope not to get burned too bad..

I'm really curious to see if they keep Mitch Rogers on as their drill writer. I remember seeing them at a couple of shows this year, once at Centerville, and then again in Denver, I remember thinking to myself that they look and march like BD, in some aspect better, but that drill was lacking to say the least. The Bluecoats are just bursting with potential, some of the coolest drumming (percussion had the worst drill), and some of the best marching brass players, and imo, these kids can march just as well as they play, I mean, you can't play that well without marching that well, and it just plain showed.

Ron sounds like a good guy, but the saying "if it's not broke, don't fix it" applies here. If Bluecoats can find a top notch drill writer this year, you will be seeing them in the top 3 for sure. I kind of feel bad for the membership, they have to learn how to march well (hopefully as well as last year) again a whole different way, it's like going to a top notch trumpet player and saying, great sound, try this new lesson instructor, he'll make you just a good a completely different way, kind of pointless and frustrating.

Yeah, I'm curious about Mitch as well. I wonder if they keep Tim Fairbanks as their visual coordinator? Didn't seem like that helped much compared to where they were in 2006.

  13. IMO, the writing was on the cell wall. Someone has to address and fix the visual issue in order for Bloo to go to the next level. I give Mr. Glasgow credit for shaking things up. IMO, Bloo actually marched very well, but no doubt, there were some design issues. Dave & Co. must be a little frustrated because this drum corps plays and drums well enough to win a title. Maybe he's looking for the same type of SMART approach to visual, (And Guard) that he already has with design, (Drew) , brass, and drums. IMO, these guys are some of the very brightest in the entire activity. (Maybe they should just take over visual too?) The whole running lap thing, etc, and general "tough guy" approach is really pretty archaic, counterproductive, and actually can cause many untimely injuries. Mr. Glasgow strikes me as a guy that is very smart, and will make all the right moves. If Ron is on his game, he could make the difference for Bloo.

    I'm confused too.

    You're basically saying:

    1. They had visual design issues keeping them from the next level

    2. They marched very well

    3. They hired Ron who is there to fix the marching, not design.

Wouldn't that mean they would still have design issues? (unless they're making changes there as well)
