  1. I can't remember if it was '89 or '90, but I'm thinking 1989 for some reason. It was on the big screen, the guy was in Star or on their staff, and the gal was in the PR guard (that I remember, because I was marching in PR those two seasons).

That was it. Must have been 1990 because I was there in 1989 and that didn't happen. I wonder whatever happened to them. So romantic IMO.

  2. That'd be great, but PR hasn't beaten Cavaliers either of the times they've met this season. I think they've only met twice, but I could be wrong. And IIRC, the last time they met, Cavies widened the gap a bit. Until PR is able to best or get closer to Cavies, I have a hard time ruling them out of the "title fight" (with apologies to Bloo).

PR hasn't beaten the Cavies since 1997 finals. That's a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time. Hopefully, this will be the year.

  3. Crown has yet to go head to head against a lot of corps recently... last time crown and coats went coats beat them... as of now crown's hope for top 5 seem dim.

edit- AND scv's score is from like 2 days ago.

I would say being 1.3 down from Cadets (in head-to-head) hardly qualifies for Crown's hopes for a top five finish being dim. At this point, 7 corps have a shot at top 5 IMO....and Bluecoats should be worried about BAC.

  4. Entitled to your opinion, but I wonder if we shouldn't count on the judges opinions over yours?

I don't think ANYONE got any gifts at finals.

Scoring trends over the last two weeks might have ruled them out, but this is just exactly the type of disrespect that the Spirit organization gets. You may say it's not disrespect, but to discard the fact that they kicked themselves in the a##es and kicked it into gear at finals sells them VERY short.

AMEN! I hate judging conspiracy's. Like the judges are going to gift Spirit into finals at the expense of all the kids in The Academy. Right!

  5. Kemo, your logic is simple and misguided. BK hasn't had a show since 7/2 (never been judged with a full panel). At their last several shows they were right up there with Colts and Blue Stars. In fact, the spread between Blue Stars and BK (over 8 shows) has never been higher than 1.3 (twice), it's been between .1 and .8. Blue Stars only beat BK once, by 1.3. On 7/2 (BK's last show), they beat Blue Stars by .5. Therefore, there is NO logical reason, what-so-ever, to think they (BK) are suddenly 4-5 points back (from Colts/Blue Stars) and in 16th place. That is simply too simple and incorrect. Madison hasn't beaten BK this season, and until they do - BK is out in front. Same with XMen, Spirit, PC, etc...

You cannot compare scores from different shows or assume that the rankins above are accurate - because all the corps have not gone head-to-head together. Head-to-head is the only accurate gauge, and head-to-head favors BK over Blue Stars (right now).

I believe only the top 8 have locked in their spots at finals. 9-12 is completely up-for-grabs and I do not believe anyone (Colts, GMen or Blue Stars) are locked into finals. We're seeing a 3 point spread between many corps - that is nothing.

  6. I think it's a little too early to worry about anybody. The Bluecoats have been improving with each year since 2000. 2007 was their best corps to date, even though it wasn't their best placement. Essentially, the tied for 4th with three other corps last year. I would expect, 1st or 8th at the end of this season, they will have fielded their best corps to date.

I just have to say, I love their uniforms - look so classy.

  7. I always love it when people use this reference, so I did a little research.

21 times, total, that a Sousa march was played. Out of how many drum corps shows? 12 are way back in the 70's; 4 times in the 80's; 3 tmes in the 90's. Only twice in the eighth year of this decade.

So, where are all the shows with Sousa marches? And do you really think it's all we played?

I HATE Stars and Stripes for ever. Hated it, hate it, will always hate it.

  8. Seriously though, since 2000 I feel drum corps has only gotten better minus 2005 (that year was a big let-down for me). I do agree after 2000 people started watching drum corps differently. I mean shoot, 2000 was maybe the best year for drum corps ever. After experiencing the last 8 or so years of drum corps I can't watch most of those old shows the same way anymore. They sound so...bleh...and are kinda bland visually. Its just music and marching for music and marching sake. I can still jam to them in my car (jammed to 97 phantom not too long ago) but I guess I've been conditioned to react negatively to sub-par-quality drum corps products. I really do feel the par for quality drum corps product (execution and design) is raising every year, which is making it hard for show designers to keep up with new levels of demand and innovation and entertainment, while making a strong competitive show. Maybe thats why some of us feel like drum corps shows are getting "worse"...?

Wow. I consider some of the shows from 1984 (my first year) to 2000 as some of the best shows ever. Sorry, but when I think about shows like 1991 Star and 1993 Star (even 1990 Star) they beat almost anything out there today. Same can be said with shows like Madison ('88 and '95), Phantom ('96, '97), SCV ('85-/'87, '89, '97-'00), BD (a handful of years), Cadets (a handful of years). Sorry, I like the straight-forward drum corps - marching and music for the sake of marching and music. Much of this theme crap today is overdone and is just laughable IMO. I'm very leary about bringing newcomers to drum corps shows, because I am embarassed for the activity often with some of this ridiculous stuff some of these corps are doing. I honestly imagine it won't be long before I care less about drum corps, because it is just headed in such a ridiculous direction...Cadets '06-'08.

  9. One thing I definitely believe is leading to the decline of DCI is the lack (or lesser degree of) recognizable music. I don't know about you, but the first time I saw Glassmen 2001, I was thinking to myself "WTF is this?" It got 5th place and the show may have deserved it for being clean, but I was just golf clapping it off the field. A bunch of music I'd never even heard of. I'm not bashing the '01 Glassmen members by any means, just the show choice.

Funny - that was BY FAR my most favorite show of 2001. I thought it was AWESOME!

  10. It's because they are spiteful towards Hopkins yet somehow in their minds embody his ideas and self into the performers known as The Cadets and thus hate the whole organization because of 1 person. I personally wish people wouldn't do that because I had the honoring of marching with several guys that are marching Cadets this year. They arn't marching because they support Hopkins ideas (they actually don't really like them) but because they want to march with one of the most time-honored corps out there.

Rather because they want a chance to win a ring. Period!

  11. people have been saying that the Cadets need to "get over it" because they knew what they were getting into.

I think the spectators (the booers and the yellers) are the ones who need to get over themselves. Most of you agree that it is not the kids, but the show and George you have a problem with. Well the design team isn't the ones on the field. So how hard is it to be nice and show the kids a little bit of reward for their effort? So what if you don't like the show? It's not that big of a deal. Get over yourself and applaud.

Sorry, if everyone against narration (the way the Cadets used it), just got up and walked out of the stadium that would send a message. I'm sorry, I am going to sit quietly at finals during/after the Cadets or leave during their show. Period.

  12. Are you serious?

How convenient. I am not digging The Cadets at this point either, but they, or George, or whoever else people want to blame can't make you act any certain way. We are all responsible for how we act and how we respond to different situations. It really bugs me that some people here want to use George as an excuse for acting like an arse.

It's not about using George as an excuse for acting like an arse. It's about having the right to express your opinion. Hey, have any of you lived in the real world? Come on - the booing or whatever is nothing compared to the crap we go through in our day to day lives in the real world. Believe me, these kids can take it. And yes, if you want to march the Cadets because you have a chance to win a ring, and you know the direction the corps is heading, then sorry - I have no sympathy. You made a choice to march with the Cadets - live with it. It's a good life lesson.

  13. Now Bosly......the kids can't help what the drill is going to be. This mom is talking about the kids/parents and their feelings. What about the corps that comes in last almost every year? Are those kids worth any less because of that? Absolutely not. It's about good sportsmanship, regardless of what is actually on the field.

I'm sorry, but the kids CAN help where they march. Everyone, and their mother, knows the Cadets are probably the most hated drum corps today (because of Hopkins). I give credit to the kids who do choose to march there, but it's their choice. If they can make the Cadets, they can march any where.

  14. To the original poster - I think your son is stronger than you think. I wouldn't worry so much about him. Yes, I hate narration (won't hide that), but your son is getting a lot of support and there are a lot of people who disagree with me on narration - to each his/her own.

I would never do anything other than clap for a corps, regardless of whether it's narration or not. I do not like where George has taken the Cadets, but I still supported their 2005 win, thought they should have been 4th in 2006, and would have supported a Cadets victory last year. Why? Because the qualities they possess that are drum corps, I felt were the best in '05 and '07 and were 4th best in '06.

A lot of people hate the direction Hopkins is moving in, and unfortunately that gets directed at the Cadets as a group. Still, your son has the support of staff, members and fans...he is and will be fine. Don't worry.

  15. This is not the finished product. If the staff realizes something is not working, I am pretty sure they will make the fix where they see fit. Just because YOU say it adds absolutely nothing doesn't make it so. Not to say that it is, or is not, but like I said, I am sure they will fix it.

2000Cadet...think about the amazing show you put out in 2000 - AMAZING! Now look at '06, '07 and '08 and tell me you like the direction the Cadets have taken. Hopkins has taken one of the best and most brilliant corps in the activity and completely transformed it into a joke! What a crime against the activity.

  16. I'd be interested in finding out how many people commenting have actually seen the Cadets show live and in person.

    I'm guessing not very many.

I haven't, and I won't. I want nothing to do with the Cadets. The only time I will ever see the Cadets again is when they're in the finale block. Hate me if you want, but the Cadets are an embarassment to the activity - it's so freakin' cheesy that it's laughable. I am afraid I will laugh during their show, much like I fought not to in '06 with that horrible singer covering up the beautiful brass. I wish they'd leave the activity. Too bad it was Star that left in 1993 and not the Cadets.

  17. Some of you guys sound as if you are blaming the top corps for continually putting out an excellent, magnetic product. I hate to say it, but that is the nature of the beast. If you are not producing high caliber shows, then people are going to go elsewhere for that type of show.

Well it's hard not to blame Mr. Hopkins (as well as the other 16 who voted in favor). Of course, he initiated this. I could have guessed as much. It won't hurt the Cadets, so why not? I'm sorry, but this is going to impact the bottom corps in a negative way, any way you look at it. The number of corps on the field decreases each and ever year. Of course, I have always thought a majority want to march with the top corps - for their chance to win a ring! Mark my words, this is going to really suck for the lower tier corps - as now it is even going to be harder for them to move up the ranks. But, the Cadets are already way up there, so why not George? Is that man ever going to go away?

  18. I'm not even sure why the membership max was increased from 135 to 150, but I was thinking today that it must have a negative impact on lower placing corps. That's 105 members in the current top 7 that could be marching else where, 150 of the top 10. I would have to think this will negatively impact the activity as a whole. Face it - most people go to a corps because of their caliber. You may argue someone loves the Bluecoats or the Cadets or BD or Regiment - but would they love them that much if they were performing at a 20th place level? Enough to want to march there? Doubt it. I thinking how many less corps we have today than when I marched, I cannot but help think this new limit is going to further decrease the amount of corps. More will get into the top World Class corps, more will get into the lower World Class corps, and less will be left to fill Open Class. I think you're going to see the strong corps get stronger and the weaker corps get weaker. Thoughts?
