  1. Musically: more "pop-ish," not the traditional ballad we expect from them

    Visually: complexity in movement

Might this be the biggest departure from what we expect from PR since black unis in 1995? Is this bigger? Am I overreacting? Can I ask another question?

    :)

I think PR's biggest departure ever was 2004.

  2. This is one of the biggest myths about DCI scoring. It sound reasonable, but it just isn't true. I've been analyzing DCI scores for years and they are amazingly consistent. Different shows, judging panels, even different numbers of judges, weather, bus breakdowns, flu epidemics, train wrecks. None of that has more than a 5-10% impact on scores. 90% of the score for any given corps is determined by 2 factors: the first score they received and the number of days since the season started.

I agree. Everyone said that we don't know Bluecoats are ahead of Cavies because it was different shows, even though they both had seen Crown/Cadets. When Bloo, Cavies and PR met, it fell right in line with the spreads between Bloo and Cadets/Crown. Furthermore, hardly anything changed last year when full panels were introduced.

Right now, Cavies are in fourth place. If you through BD into the mix, they are certainly 5th. SCV is a wild card. Say SCV is ahead of them - that puts Cavies 6th. That's not even counting the Blue Stars. So to say Academy, Troopers and Blue Knights could be within three points of Cavies, essentially says Cavies could be in 7th - 10th right now, with Phantom in 11th. Not realistic - by the largest stretch! I think saying that Madison and Glassmen are ahead of Troopers, Academy at Blue Kinghts AT THIS STAGE OF THE SEASON is a very very safe bet.

  3. You cannot compare different shows when nobody at one show has competed with anyone at the other. How can you say 'no way in hell BK\troop are that close to cavies\phantom', but yet BK was right behind glassmen last year, who were right ahead of Madison last night. (interesting note, phantom was 2.15 ahead of glassmen at finals last year, and was 2.8 above glassmen last night)

And quite frankly, we dont even know who is really ahead, because the scores we're getting arent even the full sheet, leaving out brass, guard, and visual performance.

I disagree. You can compare different shows in a sense. It is not possible that those three corps are within 3 points of Cavies/PR. Period!

  4. This is the first Bluecoats show that I've really enjoyed in quite a while, way to go. While opinions differ greatly in the drum corps world, I'm finding more to be excited about this season than in quite some time.

Me too. I mean Glassmen and Madison are possibly the 10th and 11th place corps right now and they are only 3 points down from the Cavies. This is shaping up to be one great season. Blooooo's guard is AWESOME IMO!

  5. I don't have any desire to view a show multiple times in order for it to "grow on me" (because chances are that the one and only time I'll see it is at the show) nor SHOULD I have to be "familiar with the source material" as a pre-requisite to enjoying the music. That's a ridiculous requirement. Grab me right away or forget about it. This is the entire problem with way too many Corps today. I don't want to think about the "meaning" of a show or have to have a deeper understanding of the freaking music. Don't make me think, just entertain me........

Maybe you should rethink that. I remember Star '91. I hated that show at finals and was stunned that the Cavies didn't win. A few years later and it was my favorite show and now I cannot believe it didn't win by a larger margin. Best show ever IMO.

  6. while true, it wouldn't make thematic sense if they spread out on the field. they're supposed to be moving as one organism, expanding and contracting as it moves through a life cycle.

Well, I didn't know anything about their show prior to seeing it, and I dont' think the average fan is going to get that simply from viewing the show. It's definitely better than last year, drill wise, but IMO it is not nearly as effective as Bluecoats, Cavies, Crown and Cadets. Time will tell and I wish them well. Musically, it's my favorite show I've heard this season.

  7. I do not agree at all with your comment regarding Myron.

My problem with Myron is it is demand for the shake of demand and a very compact drill. Just look at the complete lack of field coverage. It's not a good drill, at all IMO. Better than last year, but still not as effective as Crown, Cadets, Cavies and Bluecoats IMO.

  8. No, I do agree about the beginning / end - I think the ballad parts are great. It's just the "tension" sections that do nothing for me.

    Mike

    I love those - fierce!

It's going to be really interesting when Blue Stars and Boston get in the mix. Shaping up to be a really good season.

  9. Got to watch the show tonight. It's a tale of two corps, I think -

Visually, this isn't the same Phantom that we've seen for so many years. The drill is complex, engaging and finally - FINALLY - makes logical sense. The body movement is sophisticated, and the new slimmer uniforms make them look like ghostly dancers on the field. Bravo to Myron and the visual staff - brilliant job there. Seriously - it works wonderfully with the show theme.

Musically... the songs leave me flat. Two of the pieces - about 5.5 minutes of music, are nothing but horn stabs leading to a power chord, then a pit run afterwards. When they did that with Spartacus, I totally overlooked it thanks to the story being played out by the guard. In this show, it's kind of beating you over the head. I get it - the hornline is great, and the drumline is  , but those arrangements... are ugly. Now, with that said, the opening / ending ballads are gorgeous and are a worthy addition to their vast library of classics, but I'd have loved to have seen their take on 1000AD (the piece the Glassmen flugel soloist did to such great effect in 2002).

I know the music is personal preference - it either grabs you or it doesn't - but for the first time in a long time for me, it didn't grab me. Yet, it's still early, and I have hope.

    Mike

Wow, we think exactly opposite. I think the show is musically spectacular - the opening is gorgeous. I absolutely love the show musically. I do not like the show visually. I have never been a fan of Myron. This reminds me of past SCV drills (like Madison '06 did) and like Madison '06 it seems that there is demand for the shake of demand and nothing more. Honestly, I do not see this show catching Crown, Cadets, Cavies or Bluecoats - they (Bloo) were phenomenal and although their drill isn't as demanding as Regiment's, it's much more effective in my opinion. For the life of me I will never understand why Myron's still working - it's rehash after rehash, and demand for the sake of demand.

  10. Without looking anything up, Blue Devils, Cadets, Cavaliers, SCV and Phatnom.

If you add in Madison and Star (starting in 89) they were pretty much your top 6/7 for quite a while, with a few exeptions (Crossmen cracking the top 6 in '90)

This doesn't shock me, there was a reason they were called the 'Big 6', of course Madison dropped out of that in the last few years.

And with the exception of the Kingsmen, Star and Madison, those 5 have won all of the Championships

Crossmen were actually 7th in 1990. They finished 6th in 1992 and 1997.

  11. Personally, I wouldn't have done anything. I mean, really, how good is the quality going to be with the crowd drowning out the corps and from a handheld? While I would never record shows, if someone else does it, I'm not going to worry about it. The guy is likely a fan and I bet bought the DVDs anyway. I know that's an assumption, but if you're going to go to that much trouble, I'd imagine he would buy the DVDs. Plus, you never know what you might be getting yourself into if you confront someone. Imagine if he hit you and you were both escorted out of the show...Not good.

I remember in '87 a staff member brought my boom box in to record Star and Phantom at the Canton show. It provided us enjoyment on the bus, as many of us were fans of Regiment's '87 show.

Lastly, come on - you know everyone on here scoures online video sites in hopes of finding shows during the season. They are illegial as well, but we don't complain, nor do we not purchase the official recordings and DVDs.

  12. On a similar note, I've always wondered why corps are doing a month or more of everydays. Corps are moving in the third week of May now and not hitting the road untill mid-June.

When I marched not all that long ago (2002-2003) we did two weeks. That was it. And we still had the show on the field at a pretty polished level for June. What the hell are these corps doing with their time that they need 4-5 weeks worth of everydays?

I've always wondered that too. When I marched, Memorial Day weekend was our last camp. Our season started the next weekend and our show, minus the very ending was on the field. It boggles my mind that corps today have 4-5 weeks of everydays before the season starts and they can't even have the whole show on the field in time. It doesn't make sense. This especially irks me with SCV, because I feel they are always playing catch up because their staff can't get the show on the field in time. Not trying to signal SCV out - just love them so much and wish they would return to their kickin' butt ways

  13. 87 Garfield. No question.

I was a member at Regiment that summer and got to see Garfield live several times.

That show changed the way shows were written and approached. It was a landmark moment in corps.

The disappearing/reappearing company front is still one of the most brilliant visual moments ever.

You guys were pretty darn good that year too  My God, I loved your show so much. SCV and PR were my far and out favorites that year.

  14. I'll play.

Cavaliers: Likely 5th. I don't see them placing higher. I believe Crown and SCV will improve on last year, with the Cadets and BD not missing a step. Should be an interesting top 4.

Phantom: 6th. Rebounding is not going to be easy. They are certainly not going to jump to a 2005-2008 level after last year. Way too many problems last year to be magically fixed in one year. However, I do think they will rebound to 6th place.

    Bluecoats/Blue Stars: 7th to 9th (with Boston).

Madison: 10th. That staff is just too good.

    Glassmen/Colts: ?

  15. And you concluded that after observing their 12 hours of rehearsals today? And assuming they'll be laying around eating ice cream in everyday's between now and Thursday. With a brief picnic in Rosemont tomorrow, they're closer to Indy already than anyone else with nothing but practice and fine-tuning.

He probably concluded that because BD, Crown, HNC and Santa Clara ALL have better shows than the Cavies this year. They are peaking IMO.

  16. They pulled off an upset (that they did not deserve by the way) by having the audience scream in pure excitement: "Spartacus" It was so exciting that the judges gave them the win. Blue Devils really deserved it last year.

No offense, well ok offense, but this statement is pure stupidity. The judges gave Phantom the win because overall they were the best corps on the field last year. End of story.

On to Vanguard - I love the show. It's nice to see something so true to the original and it is beautiful. The whole thing. I cannot wait to see it finals night.

  17. I really wouldn't be to quick to drop them to the bottom 6. I think finishing as high as 5th is a possibility for them. I don't know why everyone thinks they have a horrible visual program. I'm sorry, but Phantom absolutely has a better drill than SCV this year. I'm not trying to rip on SCV (they are my favorite corps after all), but I'm just surprised everyone is slamming Phantom's drill. Yes, Phantom has guard issues, but I honestly believe they will be 6th (at lowest) by the end of the season. They have a horn line that can challenge the top lines and their drum line is championship worthy. Their musical scores are saving them right now - if they clean up the visual they will easily top Blue Stars, BAC and probably Bluecoats. Personally, I believe they will finish the season in 5th place, ahead of SCV too.
