Guard-ian..... I hear what you are saying..... ensamble being the entire guard as a whole... The CONTENT of the Blue Stars guard is very very hard..
I dont think anyone would disagree with that...... achievement..... again.. some drops.. (like everyone else) but that kind of spread by that judge just
doesnt seem understandable......... but more questionable then anything ! Again... and like many others feel.. this corps is not gettig truely rewarded
for it's CONTENT and ACHIEVEMENT by the judges.......(imho)
Agreed! And I am sure that BS are not yet finished with their visual contribution this year. Time will tell, but I have faith.

I was at the show. The Blue Stars guard did not have a bad show. They had drops, but so did everyone. Glassmen do have a nice guard and they looked very clean from where I was sitting. However, it is hard for me to understand that kind of spread.
Regarding Crown and Bluecoats, if Crown performed their entire show like they do the first 7-8 minutes, they would be beating the Bluecoats. The Bluecoats are very good - great sound and very clean, but the visual beauty and overall show difficulty does not match Crown. Tonight performance beat design. Crown needs to perform the end of their show better. One thing that I noticed, that could keep Crown from challenging for the title, is their drum line seems to be lost during large sections of the show. I was listening to the horns and watching the guard and would not even notice the drums for minutes at a time. That did not happen while watching the Bluecoats or the Blue Stars.
The Blue Stars seem ready to take off score wise. I would have had them in the 84-84 range and was surprised by the 83.3 (until I saw the CG score). I think that will turn out to be anomaly. I am looking forward to seeing where the Blue Stars stack up with Phantom tomorrow and how that spread changes over the next ten days. I have a feeling it will be getting smaller.
The guard sheet is ensemble based. Content and Achievement..both 10 pts. Achievement is directly related to the Content. Content from corps to corps does not always contain the same depth of writing. "Timing" "drops" and "cleanliness" are relative to what is being asked of the performer.

With the exception of California, the rest of the country has only had 5-person judging panels. Once this changes (soon I hope,) all the captions will be judged and this may level things out a bit.

What he said!
For example, Blue Stars Houdini show. What does a key have to do with it? I for one did not know that it is theorized that the kiss his wife gave him prior to each illusion also was a means of slipping him a key to open the lock.
I heard their staff explaining it to one of the judging panels and one judge saying he'd never heard of that story. A crucial point in their show that might not have been appreciated had they not explained their reasoning.

I hear BAC picked up Bruno Zuccala to work with the corps.

Ding ding ding!!!!!
This is the reason for smaller panels in earlier shows. In order to help sustain the number of early
season shows it was decided that using a smaller judging panel would help save the show sponsors money.
They are the ones who pay for judges, not DCI. It's not just the judging fee either, it's travel and lodging as well.
A lot of smaller shows barely break even (and sometimes they don't) so every little bit helps.
I happen to think these smaller early season shows are very important for everyone involved, so if DCI feels
that lessening the burden on sponsors so they keep hosting their show every year is a good idea, it's ok with me.
I don't think I'd have a problem with using full panels at the larger, DCI sponsored events like Normal, btw.
Worth considering.
The sponsors pay the same price whether it is a 5 judge or 8 judge panel. DCI saves the $$, not the sponsors.

I find it interesting that some of the early shows in California have a full panel of judges. Stanford for one on the 26th of June. It was my understanding that there would not be a full panel of judges until after the 4th of July for any of the early DCI shows.
Any clues as to why?

I seriously doubt there are enough qualified GE visual effect judges who can also judge music.

84 Cadets.........Changed the face of drum corps. Pure genius!

After reading all ten pages of posts, it appears to me that DCI will only respond when it affects their wallets. I call it the "Chicago Sports Syndrome." The Bears and the Cubs suck almost every year, yet every game is a sell-out. Why would the owners change the way they do business if they are going to get the fans at every game anyway?

c'mon everybody...close your eyes and think Bruno!
He could be of help to Jennifo, IMO.
I seriously doubt that would ever happen.

I agree. The current college freshman was born in 1991. When the Star staff was in its heyday. I'm willing to bet that many of them never even heard of Star.
-
It's just not their style to advertise everything they do.

This is like the little kid at Christmas who keeps opening presents and yelling, "More!" And wouldn't you know it, there's more.
Boo, full disclosure.....you used to work for Bill Cook

I'm sure the entire DCI board and membership will be extremely excited about the prospect of having this highly vocal and dynamic force back within the fold.
I'm sure they'll welcome him with open arms.................not!

It's not because of how they play or what they play (lately), it is because of what they represent. For every marine you see on the field, there are thousands that don't ride a tour bus but are afraid of a bus coming by them blowing up.... thousands who don't hear drums but the drum beat of artillery.. being fired at them..... thousands who get up to the sound of a bugle playing revielle, go to bed by taps and march to war. I guess that's why I stand up.
Bravo, Sgt.!

There were 12 Apostles?
-
No? As long as you can still generate "general effect," you don't need to have any of those things he listed. They didn't make finals this year anyway, even with a theme, or story, or narrative, or whatever it was supposed to be.
Implicit worth vs. shallow appeal
-
I'm sure if you contact DCI, they will be more than happy to sell you a copy of their rulebook that contains all the score sheets and philosophy of judging. As well as their competitive rules.
-
What's the point of all this?
-
I think they'll have to address their visual deficiencies before that happens. PR got a "bye" in 2008 and I think people (judges) saw that when the dvd's came out. They weren't going to make that mistake again. Sure, it's possible, but until their visual book meets their musical book, I think it's highly improbable

That's "Tim Ochran" on Visual Ensemble.
Info is on the DCI website, but I think it is restricted to judges only and contest personnel.
