  1. Humorous side note: Dennis/Yarmouth High School is located on Cape Cod and the school has a marching band. They had a band clinic one week during August and a vacationer who happens to be a relative called Town Hall to complain. The woman at Town Hall listened to the complaint and asked two questions. "Are you a resident or a vacationer?" when the person replied vacationer, she asked "Own or rent?" when the person said "rent," she hung up!

As someone that is a year-round resident of the Cape I found this particularly amusing.

  2. One thing I think we are forgetting is the other half of the equation: The marchers themselves.

They recognize which staff they want to be around and can make their decision on where to spend their summer.

I've known people that have followed caption heads from corps to corps because they like how they run their caption. I would go so far as to say that the caption heads have a larger impact on an individual's summer versus the rest of the reasons someone decides to march somewhere (distance, money, organization, personality of the corps).

Both years I marched I had two different sets of staff, and while the traditions of the corps and what made it special were intact, the educational experience I had was very different.

  3. With how skewed some of the rankings are, I'm surprised there isn't more discussion going on! If I'm correct, BDB isn't even in the top 3 right now, with Gold and SCVC leading the pack along with Spartans! I want to know more about these shows! What's going on? I'm so excited! :w00t:/> :ph34r:/>

Really cool to see the close scores of Spartans, Legends and Gold. Unfortunately, until most of these corps do their DCI tour to finals, updates aren't as frequent. BDB is sitting on a 65.2, but their last show was on 6/24, and everyone has had at least one show since then, save for BDC

  4. Where is that? looks like a beautiful little town.

Judging from their schedule, I'd say that's from a parade the corps was at in Millbury, MA

Overall, I like the new uniform. I'm not 100% sold on the stripes, but field versus standing/etc.

Musicman, I also am saddened by the change from white to black pants. I'm also an alumnus, and I know how unforgiving white on the field can be. You're either very clean or a millipede.

ETA: here is a better closer picture of the Spartans drum major, with white gloves and a chrome helmet.

  5. I also marched at Nashua, and my last year tuition was $1350. That covered everything as far as tuition, camps, uniform, horn, food, ect. I spent about another $150 on supplies for the summer, and also had to figure in gas to drive to and from rehearsals. Like Spartans87 said, fundraising can help a lot. Through donors and ad space I sold, I think I paid about $300 for my actual tuition.

  6. I think it was BD's home show in 1999.

Blue Devils were partway through the show and suddenly the power went out, plunging the stadium into almost complete darkness. There was a beat where the sound dropped off a bit as the corps was as surprised as anyone, but then they continued full on and played the rest of the show in the DARK.

In what other activity would that happen?

That happened with the Bluecoats in Jersey this past summer. During the last run of the night, the lights went out at the last minute of the show. Everyone there, members, staff and fans hyped it.

  7. Yes, Carmina Burana wasn't a good example.

I think DCI would have to at least try and do something, 15 minutes of silence on the DVD and/or 15 minutes less music on the CD wouldn't be a good selling point.

If "one day in a galaxy not so far away" two, three or four corps play music on the "do not touch with a barge pole list" then we have nearly an hour of silence... and so on.

I'm just curious what DCI would do in that situation.

I marched with someone that was with Fever in 07. I'm not sure which rights it was, but they didn't make the DVD, even if they were solidly in Finals.

  8. I think we'd see more holes if injured members weren't so persistant on working through their injuries. The only time a member would go home, is if they are unable to march at all, or face permanent damage, from what I've seen. Corps are often especially injury conscious coming up to the last leg of the season. Not to mention stretching is one of the best ways to prevent a lot of injuries. Definitely gotta give it to those members who are able to stick it through, despite an injury. Bluecoats hornline had a few people that did that this year, if I remember correctly.

There was a mello that marched with a broken wrist and later a sprained ankle, a baritone that had shoulder issues, and one of the guard members tore her calf I believe?

  9. picky picky! Can always count on the DCP crowd ! :w00t:

    Edited OP (about halfway). :satisfied:

There are also no DCI corps in ME, VT, NH, CT, RI, FL, VA, MD, DE, AL, MI, LA, AR, AK, HI, TN, KY, WV, IN, MI, MO, OK, KS, NE, NV, ND, SD, NM, UT, MT, ID or NY (but there used to be).

There are Open Class corps in NH, TN, and MI. Spartans, Music City and Legends hail from those state.

  10. Wow, I just got a big history lesson on this thread.

Do judges still use tapes with all the digital media around?

Judges do use digital recorders now, and from my understanding, upload the tapes to a website called Dropbox that each corps has. Each corps uses their Dropbox differently, mostly sharing files like music, drill, scores, recorded run-throughs, hen etc. The staff can then listen to the recordings before a critique.
