  1. Another 4-valve marching tuba...what a waste.

    I want either:

    1) a 3-valve compensating system, or

    2) a 3-valve system with slip-slide mechanism for 3rd valve slide. (not a 1.5" trigger!)

Both of those systems are cheaper and lighter than a 4V system. Yamaha is so close, but refuses to budge...and why should they? Half of top 12 is using them, and sound great. Is anyone complaining about Crown or Bluecoats tubas? Didn't think so...but they don't exactly "push the chromatic envelope" like Blue Devils either.

    Please,please,Mega Millions, come my way!

    Signed,

Someone with hands-on knowledge of every G and Bb marching contra/tuba out there except the new tuba in the video, and the "1st valve triggered King." (didn't Phantom play something like that a few years ago?)

I would just be excited for the changes they've made to the design for a possible peripheral out of the left eye.

  2. ... and 'they' never will know of the activity since it's no longer publicly broadcast (I discovered DCI on PBS in '88 and was immediately hooked and marching 3 years later), and any attempts by us rabid fans to promote the activity through Youtube with self-made 'in the lot' video's or actual stadium performances is met with cease and desist warnings. DCI is doing everything in their power to keep it all a secret.

I don't think DCI is trying to keep drum corps a secret from the masses, they just want to control the way it's viewed. If Johnny is showed a video on Youtube or any other video online, if he doesn't like it, he's only sacrificed 2 to 5 minutes of his time. If Johnny goes to a show or purchases a DVD or downloads something from the Fan Network and doesn't like it, he has given time and money to DCI.

  3. This is not something new. It just simply means that the line-up is not finalized/complete.

Okay I guess DCI could have worded it better then. More corps to come implies that they have corps lined up to be at said shows, but it wasn't official. IMO it would be easier and more accurate to say something like 'The lineup of corps is not finalized and subject to change.'

  4. So I was looking on the 2011 schedule for shows in my area, and some of these shows like the one in Bridgewater, MA on the 15th of July. We have 7th, Les Stentors, Platinum, the Muchachos, and the Spartans. Also included in the line up are 'more corps to come!'

Unless I've missed something, are there any corps going for evaluation to compete in DCI in 2011? I know we had Genesis, Forte, Platinum and Spartans in 2010, but I was under the impression that the only corps being evaluated on the horizon was Imperial Sound, but it was my understanding they would not go for DCI evaluation until 2012. Imperial Sound folks feel free to correct me on that, but are there any other corps going to be added otherwise to these shows. I hardly doubt any of these corps are WC.

  5. People always seem to write about how bad and lame bands are and it makes me wonder why.

When I was in band we didn't get picked on like a geek. We were well respected in the school on the circuit. As a matter of fact the only time something happened was when several members of my corps were picked on by locals. My band practiced 3 days a week for 5 hours a day. An hour class and 4 hour practice after school from August until the end of November. We did comps sometimes twice a weekend. Never finished lower then 3rd in TOB.

While I understand TOB isn't close to DCI but since a vast majority of us come from bands why the general dislike. There are many bands out there that are on par with corps. Is it simply the fact that they have woodwinds? That they don't tour? What is it?

I feel like the biggest issue is the reason behind joining a band. Some do it for the social aspect, some for a credit requirement, some because they think it'll be an easy class, and others because they love music. Because a lot of people join high school band for reasons other than an opportunity to play music and march on a field, they don't approach the activity the same as those who do. IMO this is why you have the people that don't put in the full 100% effort.

I would hazard a guess that most people join drum corps nowadays because they want to be the best at something or push themselves harder than with their high school or college band. They like performing, they like marching, they like music. These kids want to do it at a very high level. Add that to the rehearsal schedule in the spring training/tour and you get the product we know and love.

  6. As a percussionist, I should warn you that tenor and bass drummers (especially bottom bass drummers) might have a bit of room to complain.

But of course, percussionists aren't whiney sissies... :mat:

    :mat:

Anyone that marches a baritone or higher horn should not complain, as well as any snare or bass drum under 26". Unless they want to get dirty looks from the euphs, tubas, low basses and quads...

  7. Were you familiar with "The Boxer" before Bluecoats played it? I really enjoyed their performance of the song, and especially the big brass feature. But having enjoyed Simon & Garfunkle since childhood (well enough to have long since memorized the lyrics for that song and many others), I found it hard to think of the Bluecoats' version as an improvement. But if I had encountered it that way first, I might view it differently.

    So long, Frank Lloyd Wright.

I wasn't familiar with the original but even after hearing it, I prefer the Bluecoats version if for only the energy in the brass feature. Nothing against the original, I like it too.

  8. If I were the director, or marching member, of "any" OC corps my reaction would be: Great; let's do it! This is why we spent the summer doing this! We get to perform another time before heading home! So, why are you limiting it to the top 5 OC and not all of the OC?

I'm not saying that the top 5 of the OC should go to WC Quarters, I was only supposing that those corps go and the others opt out for whatever reason. I'd like to see all the OC corps go to WC Quarters, I was only expressing concern for the length of the day for everyone involved.

I wouldn't too happy being up at 3am for a 8am performance time but if it meant going against all of the corps combined that would be awesome. I'm upset I aged out right before this rule came into effect.

  9. "Midnight will feature the music of Key Poulan as well as selections from the blockbuster hit movie Twilight, including the beautiful production of Bella’s Lullaby."

    :tongue::tongue:

Well, I have faith that the design staff will be as tasteful as possible with their choices for the show this season. I'm sure the Twilight portion of the show will fit in with the other elements.

That said, I'm much more interested to hear which pieces from Key Poulan they will be performing.
