  1. Once again the Chase Community Giving Campaine is on. This year the top $$$ is the first place ( most votes) will receive $250K, 2-5 place $100K, 6-100 place $25K.

The winners could definitely benefit with this boost in their finances. It only takes a moment to vote. Go to the following corps sites to get links to vote. Voting closes nov 22.

    Academy

    Blue Knights

    Cascades

    Crossmen

    Colts

    Genisis

    Legends

    Oregon Crusaders

    Pioneer

    Velvet Knights

You have ten votes in all.

    Lets help these folks out.

  2. My first year in corps 1979 I was in the Raiders from San Jose CA. We had no food truck, trailer or anything.

What we did have was an awesome bingo game that made the corps a great deal of money and at mealtime the corps busses would pull up to a bank of restaurants and as you got off the bus the bus mom would hand you cash to go buy your meal! This took an aweful lot of rehearsal time but it was fun for a bunch of kids to go eat out every night...

Back in the old days. Much different nowadys.

  3. And, in some corps, the cook truck volunteers are treated poorly and with contempt by administration and staff.

Sadly, I know that of what I speak.

So sorry you had connected with such a corps as you describe. I do not know of any corps that treat their cooking crew that way.

The corps I am connected with use all volunteers. Two individuals plan the menu and make arrangements for procurement on food on the road. ( delivered by Sysco at housing sites). Crews of 6 or so work for a week and are releived at a major show site. It is very hard work but VERY APPRECIATED by our kids and staff, I cannot remember one meal where someone does not say "thank you food crew".

There are a few corps that "contract out" this job ( the whole thing from A-Z). Either to individuals that have talent in this area or possibly a company.

I am on a quest to find contacts for this feat. Does anyone know of any? I am already aware of the complexity of it.

    KEEP eating well kids.

  4. Not following the question. Can you clarify what you are looking for?

Situation: Most corps on tour feed their members via Food Trailers, Chuck

Wagons, etc. These vehicles are manned by cooks, food crews, etc. These individuals are either parent volunteers or possible paid employees. It is quite a logistic endeavor to purchase food, store it, cook it, cleanup etc.

My question is that there may be a catering business, or qualified indivdual that could handle this feat ( for a price) to take the burdon off the corps. I hope this explains it better

  5. I always wondered why corps do not either rent out their food trailers during the off-season, or go to the larger festivals and such and use them to make $$$ selling food. We have a bunch of festivals here in Kansas during the fall and spring that draw tens- to hundreds- of thousands of people and they all have big food court areas that are always packed. Although alot of it is "carnival" type food (i.e., cotton candy, funnel cake, etc.), they also have staples such as burgers, hot dogs, fries, etc. A corps food truck would really provide a great tool to sell food out of at these festivals during the off-season as a fundraiser. I know Blue Stars always does really well selling brats, hot dogs, etc. at the La Crosse Octoberfest every year.

I really was adressing meals for the corps while they are on tour vs using volunteers. Many corps have the same people preparing tour meals by either being a volunteer or getting paid.

  6. I'm going to be in Phoenix starting tomorrow for about a week. Would love to check out the Academy if I knew what a typical days schedule looks like. I know in the evenings they usually work on music ensemble in the parking lot.

  8. I know this is going to sound dumb, but I am a little confused on WGI. Is this tied in with DCI? I have heard that some of the corps have winterguards, but that there are alot of high school winterguards. So if SCV has a winterguard, is this all the same kids that are members of SCV during the summer? And do they actually compete with all high school colorguards, or are there separate competitions?

I have thought about attending a competition if I can find one in the area sometime. I saw on the Cavies 04 tour dvd the 1980's winterguard show of Bond. Some cool stuff.

So which corps have winter guards? Which corps guards place the highest in these competitions? Any info is appreciated.

The Arizona Academy of Performing Arts ( Academy DBC) has been performing in WGI for several years.

This year they placed third in Independant Open Class. The majority of members are DC members also. They get experience from both DCI and WGI activities.

  10. We just got our tickets for Pasadena in the mail today! Section 18 Row 37 Seats 1-3. I'm a band director and I need to move my camp which for the last who knows how many years has been on championships week. Anybody in AZ know any GOOD camps the last week in July in which it will not be blazingly hot outside. We've been near Heber at Shadow Pines.

Anyway...... GO West Coast!!!!!! BD needs to complete the sweep!
