  1. I'm not saying it would fair any better than the video of Broken Arrow posted above, but their BOA Nationals finals run was SO MUCH TIGHTER than that encore run video. Still would fair about the same, just thought I would throw that out there.

Phantom's 2008 finals performance was better than their victory run. I'm nearly positive the same could be said of any corps; good point but not necessary or game-changing here.

I marched DCI with people that marched in the very top BOA bands... as great as BOA bands are, the kids I talked to said the level of demand and attention to detail is not even close.

Of course it isn't. The difference isn't in execution (DCI corps could probably win BOA on technical merit alone) but in design.

  2. You know? I was the last doof who started a thread like this and since then I've done some homework and came to the following conclusion. Broken Arrow and The Colts both had the same hit in their show in 2011 from Swan Lake and...well...here...

Check out Broken Arrow's hit at 3:54...

Then check out The Colts hit at :53 ...

I mean, you can't get a more direct comparison than that. The 2011 BOA National Champion and the 2011 DCI 16th Place Semifinalist doing the exact same hit in almost the exact same manner.

And clearly.....THE COLTS WIN! Just listen to the fullness of The Colts sound in comparison to the holes that are in Broken Arrow's sound. Broken Arrow is GREAT (my favorite BOA show EVER)...but the obvious is still the obvious. And this was only mid July for the Colts at a rehearsal out of uniform...and it's still obvious.

    Case Settled!

NO ONE is debating that the level of musicianship, execution, technique, etc. is better in BOA. NO ONE! Now, you might argue a Broken Arrow vs. last place Open Class comparison, sure. No one SHOULD, though.

I'm willing to argue that Broken Arrow's overall design is better than the Colts' overall design. It's evident in the hit; look at what the Broken Arrow kids are doing with that hit visually vs. what the Colts are doing.

I'm a Colts homer, no doubt. But Broken Arrow designs better than even most finalist corps.

  3. If you're able to lift, focus on triceps and lats. Likely, you're not seeing results because you're thrusting your hips forward to compensate for the weight. You won't get anywhere if your hips aren't properly aligned to your heels (not to mention staff will kill ya for it) so be sure you're standing with good posture at all times. Shoes over the bell work nicely. Also, run. Running will help everything. As will core muscle workouts.

  4. Speaking of WC drums, Cadets are marching an all rookie snare line this year. Don't think that is a negative though, these guys can flat out play and have great hands. Most promising snare line the Cadets have had in several years! :satisfied:

Rookies to the organization or rookies to drum corps?

Big difference; if they're true rookies, I'm impressed. If they're just new to the corps, meh.

  5. Whatever, dude. Every corps has their honks. Crown honks, for instance, being among the most annoying and vocal. The Scouts tend to stay in their thread and not run around beating their chests in other threads. The same can't be said for most other corps fans.

As to GTC's comments in this thread, I've said it before and I'll say it again...I hate the Bluecoats with a passion. I haven't enjoyed a product they've put on the field since Night in Tunesia. I find them gimmicky and boring. I especially can't stand when people rave about them as if they're something special. I literally couldn't be happier than if they closed up shop tomorrow and were never heard from again and I don't care what anyone thinks of that.

HOWEVER, despite my feelings about the Bluecoats, I have never felt the need to open a Bluecoats thread and post negative things or troll their fan base. I get no satisfaction from it. In other words, I'm not a dick about it.

    Don't be a dick.

Saying it makes you one. Congrats!

  6. "Hazing" is squirting ketchup and mustard on someone while they are asleep, while another squirts whipped cream in their shoes. Completely harmless and all in good fun. The crap in this above article does not even qualify to be called "hazing". I'd call it GANG ACTIVITY! I mean.......look at it.......

Oh, do tell us! Which gangs were involved?

  7. I'm overly critical of the organization because I don't want to lose the Cadets. They are a great corps with a great history. And I feel like the corps is not in the best hands anymore. Sure he puts a great design and instructional staff in front of his drum corps. And he should leave them alone and let them do their job. And he should concentrate more on running his business more efficiently, than begging people for money every two seconds.

I love the Cadets. I loved last year's show. Historically they are one of my favorite corps. I just wish things from up top were ran better. Especially in today's economy there is very little room for error before things start catching up to you. The business model cannot be the same at YEA as it was in the 90's or 2000's.

And Charlie, you can't always see everything in maroon colored glasses.

Your optimism about all things drum corps is a breath of fresh air at times. But I personally can't stay optimistic when there are certain things in reality holding it back.

I'm sure you have a good understanding of how this organization works.

  8. It simply means that George should not be writing everything (seems there are a lot of great people there, surely drafting a job description like this could be delegated?).

It also means the guys they hire will get paid.

On the topic... this is gold.

Bottom line, if you can't delegate nearly every task outside the core strategic decision-making of the organization, there is a breakdown somewhere... could be the people, could be the system of communication and reporting, could be just control issues.

Whatever it is, CEO of an org the size of YEA actually writing job descriptions is a symptom of a larger issue and demonstrates that the individual and organization are not working as efficiently as they should. I've never seen anyone in my entire life that works as hard as he does, really. But working harder doesn't mean more gets done. It took me a long time to realize that it is sometimes exactly the opposite.

Were I on the YEA board, I would push to limit his working hours outside of tours/camps to 40 hours per week (band stuff should be able to run itself... if it can't, find the right fit of people so that it can). So much more would get done and the company would be much more focused as there would be an entirely different level and prioritization, planning and delegation.

    You're a wonderful micromanager, aren't you?

  9. Heh.

For all the navel-gazing that the show description throws out, I imagine they'll get that in somewhere along the way.

I'm already not looking forward to the inevitable "this drum corps show is deep, dude" arguments.

Hint: Duchamp didn't have to worry about a score, folks.

And an esoteric Blue Devils corps does?
