Hey, Patrick after all those years of marching and with such success do you mind me asking how this season is for you not being on the field?

Honestly, I've missed the people the most. I finally got to see Cadets at rehearsal the other day and though I do miss marching a lot, I honestly felt blessed just to be able to sit in front of them and witness what was going on on the field. I felt like I was watching drum corps for the first time. I just kept laughing and smiling the whole time. It was amazing!

  2. Meh, scores day to day can be pretty inconsistent. Case and point, last year going into San Antonio we were 2nd to BD by only .1 if I remember correctly (we were at separate shows though...) and when we hit SA we were in 5th and 3 points down to them. So we'll just have to wait and see how things pan out!

  3. Cadets need to get their percussion firing on all cylinders. Anyone hear how the injury situation with the bass 1 and tenor played out? I've seen pics of all 5 basses, so I'm assuming the bass drummer is okay. Not sure about the tenor though.

I went and saw them in Atlanta this weekend. During rehearsal bass 1 and the tenor drummer didn't practice the majority of the time. And when I saw the bass 1 afterwards, he looked like he was limping pretty bad, so I'm not sure what is going to happen. I hope both of them get healthy soon!

  4. Anybody else notice that David Starnes judged both GE music and Music ensemble and had CC up .5 and .4 in those captions, which was the biggest spreads (besides perc...)? Just interesting he was judging 2 categories and put CC so far above HNC. Either way, congrats tonight Crown! And keep working hard Holy Name!

  5. I knew Daniel personally...the funny thing is I never got any negative feedback from him. He always seemed, from what I remember, pretty happy to be apart of Cadets. I wish him the best of luck at BD though. If that's what makes him happy, then i'm glad he is there. I do hate that he had a "negative experience" though...

  6. Phantom has the best mello line year in and year out IMO.

Cavies usally have the 2nd best mello line every year.....for what its worth.

Maybe it is my bias, but I can remember before I even started marching that when someone mentioned a great mello line, my mind automatically went to Cadets (if nothing else for their sick runs while maintaining good tone). But hey, that's the great thing about this activity....you can like whoever you want for whatever reason you want!

  7. For me it is Cadets 2005. I remember changing out of my uniform after shows and RUNNING back to the stands to be able to watch it one more time. I loved every part of this show and thought they werea bunch of marching monsters. Not to mention that the drumline, brassline, and colorguard were unreal good....overall one of my favorites!

PS. It was REALLY tough to choose just 1!

  8. though their brass ensemble sound got very harsh during most of their fff sections, including the ending. The middle voices, especially, overblew terribly in some spots.

That was my first reaction when I got done listening to it. I remember the mellos having such an edge, especially at the end, that it was just too much. Other than that, I thought it was a solid musical show but was somewhat lacking visually. Overall I thought it was a great show though!

  9. Yeah, it's different alright. Self-proclaimed "professional" drum corps. If I were a marching member of one of the corps at that show tonight, I would boycott it unless I was getting paid the going studio rate in Vegas.

It's fine to have an "American Idol" format, just don't call it "fair" and don't call it "professional" unless the performers are getting paid.

This model is doomed, IMO, unless members of the future are somehow snowed into thinking this a cool idea, and don't mind being taken advantage of "to be cool."

At the very least, I bet they'll remove the "professional" part of it by next year. I'll keep screaming about it until they do.

I would think that most of the members are just excited to get the opportunity to go to Vegas. I know I would have loved to go do that show and MAYBE get a free day out there. I'm pretty sure BD got a free day....so no. I don't think anyone would ever want to boycott this show...

  10. I respect everyone. Obviously, when you march you have personal opinions about various other corps for whatever reasons. Every corps gets on the bus and says "F the *corps that just beat us* I hate them" and whatever. That's just part of the competition. But in the end, we are all on the same team. Every person who has marched has sacrificed and given up many things in order to do something that we love, and they deserve the respect and acknowledgement for that.

Additionally, everyone has their opinions about certain shows. But when you see people who marched, IMO it is important to remember that every single one of them did the best that they can do with what they were given. The first example that comes to mind is Cadets 05 to Cadets 06. Cadets 05 was obviously more successful on the field, but the people who marched in 06 should not be viewed as inferior (for lack of a better word). And if you didn't like a show, that is your own opinion, but the kid in the jacket didn't design the show. All the kid in the jacket did was work their ### off. Instead of thinking "this kid marched a show that I hated" you should be thinking "this kid, and many others like him, worked his ### off all summer so I could have something to watch."

If someone marched 6+ years or whatever, that is obviously impressive. They contributed a lot to the activity. That doesn't mean that people who only marched 1 or 2 years should be looked down on. You can't go to someone and say "why didn't you march a third year?" If you talk to them and hear their drum corps story, then you can ask, but it is vastly unfair and wrong to assume things about people who marched a shorter time. What if they didn't even know about drum corps when they had 5 years left to march? Are you going to think "haha, this loser didn't even know about drum corps, and I marched 7 years, I am so much better!" I mean, that would probably make you an ########.

If you didn't like someone during the season, that's fine, but in the end you should be more than happy to kick back and share a beer with someone who marched drum corps, regardless of where they marched. I mean, honestly... if the German and British soldiers in the middle of WWI can share drinks, cigars, and a game of soccer, then us drum corps fans can treat each other with respect.

Yeah I agree with this. I think EVERYONE deserves respect. I have always thought, though, that a lot of the guys in the lower corps just get shafted a lot of the times. I marched a lower corps for 3 yrs, then went to a higher corps for 3 yrs. I can tell you that when I mention the lower corps I marched I always get a "Oh ok." response. But when I mention the higher corps I get a "HOLY COW! THAT'S AWESOME!" I just have always hated that people, especially people who are not around the activity, judge so harshly on where you march...
