  1. Well...

That's a matter of opinion and taste, and I am certainly not going to debate you on what you like. If you like Zimmer, that is great, of course.

I will respect your opinion of Zimmer as long as you respect mine. :)

Hey, as long as you like Eric Whitacre's music, I don't care what ya like. :P :)

    (I... "kinda like" Whitacre's music...)

  2. I don't see how this is possible, since Mars is in the public domain.

Holst Foundation Sues Film Composer for Copyright Infringement

    By Vivien Schweitzer

    15 Jun 2006

The London-based Gustav Holst Foundation is suing composer Hans Zimmer, claiming that part of his score for the film Gladiator infringes copyright on a movement from Holst's The Planets.

In an email, Peter Carter, a partner at Finers Stephens Innocent, confirmed that G&I Holst Ltd. and music publisher G. Schirmer Ltd. issued proceedings in the High Court in London on April 12, 2006, alleging that part of Zimmer's Gladiator soundtrack infringes copyright on the opening movement of The Planets, "Mars, the Bringer of War."

The proceedings are against Hans Zimmer’s publishers and various Universal entities involved in the distribution of the film and the CD soundtrack.

Composed around 1915, The Planets includes a movement for each of the seven planets (excluding Earth) that were known at the time. Holst wrote music to reflect the characters of the Roman gods after which the planets were named. "Mars, the Bringer of War" is a brashly martial piece with lots of brass and percussion. John Williams's score for Star Wars, to name one example, also evokes Holst's "Mars."

Zimmer, a veteran film composer, most recently wrote the score for The Da Vinci Code. His credits also include The Thin Red Line, Batman Begins and Backdraft.

Do you have the soundtrack? There's a bit that is almost identical.

  3. To the corps vets that have a problem with this thread existing...

I've noticed many times on this forum an attitude towards those who have not marched.

Are drum corps fans not allowed to post on DCP? Am I missing something?

The way I see it, fans of the art should be praised by you. The fans are what keep drum corps alive. If no one came to the shows, well... there might not be anymore shows. The 15 year old baritone player from the middle of nowhere might be on this site, a die hard fan... maybe he's going to turn into a drum corps member someday. This site can be a congregation for members and alumni, but for fans too, as it can be a breeding ground for future corps members and future funding for your art.

    It just bothers me...

    And that's my .02.

  4. Dang it, I JUST saw a video of a div I corps doing this piece on youtube, but now I can't find it. I don't think it was Boston though in this video, it was [i think] another corps playing through it.

    I just can't remember.

    But I do remember thinking...

Can't do this piece without concert french horns.

Nothing will ever compare to the choral version.

  5. Hello...

My name is Rachelle and I'm a music education major at the University of Central Florida.

I'm a french horn player and march mellophone, but in high school I marched euphonium.

I've never marched corps but... the thought crosses my mind more and more everyday.

    :)

  6. "ok tenors, for this next rep i want you to bring that lick down one dynamic."

    (line completes rep)

"all right tenors, this time make sure the innerbeats are a very conservative 3in, and the accents dont go above 6."

    (line completes rep)

"good job guys, but hey tenors, for this rep, just play the accents, and think about the innerbeats."

    (line completes rep)

"all right very nice, now this time just play the part in your head and hear how it lines up with the ensemble"

    (line completes rep)

"ok good, lets try that one more time for consistancy"

    (line completes rep)

"all right tenors, good change... its in." (walks away)

    HA! I like this...

  7. I think you did the right thing here. You took one aside, with great trust I assume in this person, and you didn't blow your cool on the kids. Maybe bring it up a few times more, just to emphasize the severity of it. (In a joking manner, perhaps? "Hey guys, remember to lock the door and flip the electric fence switch...")
