  1. James,

Not only is the music awesome, but I can definetly hear this as being used in a drum corps show sometime. It is simply awesome.

Also, when I am done marching drum corps, my biggest goal is to become a composer for movie scores, so it is really inspiring to see somebody so involved with the activity doing something like this. I am really looking forward to seeing the movie now, and hearing SCVC when I can sometime this summer.

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Hey Matt,

thanks so much for your kind words of praise. It is great that you are marching in drum corps as it will help you develop the discipline to compose and put in the long hours associated with film composing. You will find that there are very few things in life that will push you as hard as marching corps and you can take that into the professional world and kick some serious ###.

Awesome that you have the desire to be a film composer. Study hard, listen to the classics (especially the 20th century) and develop your own sound. Don't try to sound like anyone else. Know that it is a long, hard road but if you persevere, you will succeed.

    All best,

    James Peterson

  2. Hey Jim (sorry, JAMES)!

Awesome stuff. You should be doing this for a living.

Have you met or talked to Lee Rudnicki? You guys should work together.

I will be down there (with renegades) in mid-July - you should come to the show and we can hang afterwards.

    Hi Chris,

thanks man. I would like to meet Lee and hope to see you after the Renegades show in July. I may be up for the show on June 21st working with the Vanguard Cadets and maybe can see each other then.

    Jim

  3. WOW,

congratulations on your new project. I am a HUGE film/music fan. I study it almost more than the classical/romantic/21st century rep!

A good friend of mine is going to the big film scoring school in souther Cali. I would love to play for ANY film one day.

I just started listening to your work so I cannot tell you how I feel. I am impressed so far by what I hear.

    Matthew

Thanks Matthew. Let me know your thoughts after you have listened!

    All best,

    James

  4. Hello Everyone,

I just returned from Prague having recorded my latest feature film score for a movie called "The Red Canvas." We recorded it in the Czech National Symphony Hall on May 13th and 14th with 84 members of the Prague Phil. As always my music seems to be heavily influenced by Drum Corps as both a member and fan since the late 70s. I have continued my participation with drum corps as the composer of SCVC 2008 show "Perspectives"

To hear some of the music from the movie even before the film is released go to my website www.jamespetersonmusic.com You can also leave comments here and on my myspace MYSPACE

Thanks so much in advance for listening. Enjoy!

Hope to meet you all this summer at the shows!

    All best,

    James

  5. I'm not all that familiar with iWeb, or what it's capable of, because I deal mostly with Windows and Linux machines. I checked one of my client's sites, though (a high school band program), where I have the director's iWeb blog hooked up to the site. It looks like iWeb can definitely do text output, because the director's blog is all text.

It might be due to the fonts you're using. Perhaps iWeb wants to make sure that it looks the same to everyone, so it converts the whole thing to an image? If you try to select some text from the site you'll see what I mean. When you try to select an individual word, it highlights the whole image.

The biggest reason that it's important to have the body content of your site in text is that if it's in images or Flash animations and such, search engines can't read it. They'll basically stop by your site, see a bunch of pictures, and leave, since they can't read (or even know) that the content of the page is written in the images.

Again, sorry to be of little help, but I'm not familiar with how you might change or fix that with iWeb. Maybe a Mac user can jump in and share some insight...

I like the design though! It's very visually simple (that's good!) and easy to find the important information.

EDIT: Ok, I found some plain text. On the Music page where it says "To hear a medley of some...", that's definitely plain text. Whatever you did there works fine.

I will make sure to type future content in iWeb as opposed to copying it from another app. Thanks for your time and tips.

    James

  6. I like the minimalistic approach to the site. Definitely a breath of fresh air.

However, as a web designer myself, I worry about having the entire content of your pages in images, rather than text. From a search engine point-of-view, there's no text that can be indexed, so it won't even show up as a blip on the radar in the search results. Also, for users that use screen readers or have other accessibility concerns, there's nothing for their screen reader to read.

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for this. I am a composer and not really a web designer. I put this together using iWeb. The concerns you addressed are totally new to me so thanks very much. Is there any way to add text from a search engine point of view (or meta-tags? etc.) or a way to convert the output of iWeb to address these concerns? We definitely want to get this in front of as many eyes as possible and don't want to limit our searchability. Any help or tips are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for taking the time to give us feedback. Very cool.

    James

  7. Thanks Daniel. I have a preference for websites that are easy to navigate, that you can find what you are looking for easily, and make logical sense. I also like a minimalist design approach. I am glad that you like the design. I just checked out your website. Very cool to meet a colleague in the band scoring business. Best of luck to you.

I like how clean the page looks. Not obtrusive or too "flashy" at all.

    Kudos!

  8. BUMP. For those who have checked out our website, what do you think?

  10. I think that it would be cool to have amplified strings and winds as a part of the front ensemble. It would add a great deal to the instrumental color and orchestration possibilities. It doesn't take away from the brass ensemble in any way it just adds musical options. It is not about evolution or devolution it is simply about expanding the musical possibilities and giving "drum corps" a real world ensemble relevance.

For what it's worth, I marched two valve bugles in G with the Velvet Knights, the Freelancers and the Santa Clara Vanguard in the 80s and thought it was great! I'm currently composing the Vanguard Cadets 2008 production "Perspectives." I love drum corps and have since I saw finals as a kid in 1977. I am also currently composing the feature film The Red Canvas starring John Savage, George Takei and Ernie Reyes Jr. you can catch a productions teaser for it at www.redcanvasthemovie.com I regularly record my film music work with symphony orchestras and I write for marching bands and wind ensembles. I have recently learned a good deal about the orchestration limitations writing for drum and bugle corps and only believe that the addition of more musical color would only be a good thing.

    Best,

    James Peterson

  11. Hi, sorry in advance for the shameless self promotion... :)
