I know Dans was being sarcastic about “DCI has never had a female dm”...but it got me thinking

of some great ones over the years that led with charisma and talent....Kristi Spears Phantom 96-97,

Catherine Clarke BD 91,  Marcia Hanson Phantom 83-84, Becky Woods Star 85-87?, Ashley Tappen Star 90?

    Any I’m forgetting?

go back even a little further, Vicki Drummond Blue Rock.  Late 60s

Many posts ago someone invited me to attend an event in Texas in July.  I replied my acceptance of the offer, but I haven't noticed any email or other contact from the person who posted the invitation.   If possible could that person contact me?  ray@kimber.com

    with kind regards,

    Ray

Are you sure you want to do Texas in July?  I did basic in San Antonio during July and August and it was one of the worst experiences of my life, weather wise.

so...i've been thinking about this. I remember when the move to DE was announced and i was like "wtf?"....then I thought about it.

ID has local contacts, access to multiple facilities, good folks at working grants, and it's also not in an area with 2 DCI corps, as well as cabs and Fusion to fight for bodies. easy access to Philly and all those Annapolis schools, even some south Jersey. some pretty smart thoughts after all. Add in an alumnus who is passionate, well known in the region with a ton of contacts, and also creative when it comes to design on the side. I thought it'd be great.

Then the merger was undone, JP was gone, Bush alumni trashing the ID guys and spreading all kinds of lies...and I just sat back and thought "well, they're ####ed". Guess i was right. I am sure some Bush alum or board member will see this and send me nasty grams, but i'll say this....if the bad news is really true, the current board has no one to blame but themselves. In todays DCA, it's incredibly hard to to come back from the dead.

Forgive my ignorance Jeff but who are the ID Guys?

  5. Avedis Zildjian lived in Constantinople during the 17th century and practiced alchemy, the study of transforming metals into gold. In a stroke of luck in 1618, he accidentally discovered a unique metal alloy made from tin, silver, and copper. Avedis used this new alloy to make cymbals, and was amazed at the powerful sound that was created as a result. Word of his marvelous new cymbals spread, and the sultan requested that he make more for his elite band. As he perfected his craft, Avedis was given the honorary title of "Zildjian," which means "son of a cymbal maker."

For the next four centuries, Avedis’s cymbal making process remained a family secret and the Zildjian business grew. Eventually, the company moved to the United States, and today, Zildjian cymbals remain popular with musicians.

  6. Will DCA be around in 5 years?  I haven't had the opportunity to go through all 66 pages of posts so if I am repeating someone's argument forgive me.

There is a big turd dropping elephant in the room that people aren't mentioning....lack of competition.  There is no drama as to who will win.  l think it was Fran who said not that long ago that at Reading's Spring Preview show you  could watch Buccs show and know 1/2 way through that stage performance that the season was over in May.

What year was your favorite year marching and why? Was there one show that you recall that stands out? What was special about your corps that year? You can have more than one year!

I know this is a DCI thread but I'm going to choose Sunrisers in 83.  The show that stands out for me was DCA finals because we kicked ### that night.  I was a baritone player and there were only 2 3rd baris, me on one side and Ernie on the other.

It was my favorite because, after what happened to me in 82 I could leave with my head up and my pride intact.  I went over to Reading for the 84 season and never looked back.  I'll always be a Buccaneer.

Hey Dan and others - you must remember "Jimmy" Dinkins as well. He thought he was the greatest percussion judge that ever came out of Atlanta. One other thing about Rodney - his wife and daughters were gorgeous. I know at least one of his daughters marched in Spirit's guard - I think in 1981.

5th from the right....is that John Flowers the percussion arranger?  If so he had some killer drum lines with Reading in the early 70s.

Yes, I knew John Aritano. I marched with the Crusaders from 1959 through 1969. I knew that he was associated with the Sunrisers. In fact, after I left the corps some of the younger members went on later on to March with the Sunrisers as well.

I don't know which of the songs were John's but If Who Will Buy was one of them, I was the soloist at the start of the song. We used it off the line in those days.

Token, Who Will Buy was a Hy Dreitzer chart.  I know I marched Manville 68 and 69 and Sunrisers after 4 years in the Air Force.  John didn't come on staff until 71.

Wow... I can only imagine. That place was cavernous.

I will still always associate that stadium with the disastrous "10-Cent Beer Night" promotion at an Indians game, circa 1974.

An idea to bring in more fans, gone horribly wrong.

Fran the idiotic part of the 10-Cent Beer Night is that they did it a 2nd time a couple of weeks later!!!  Honorable mention goes to Comiskey Park in Chi.  The infamouse "I hate disco" night....lol

  11. i know this is a DCI thread but for some strange reason there was a disco out on the south shore that hired us -Sunrisers- to appear at their opening -Inside the Disco!   Oh wait the OP said stadiums!! Sorry ...well I'm going to tell my story anyway.  The manager told us not to play loud.  Well the Sunrisers being the Sunrisers who never paid attention to rules, suggestions, or for that matter orders proceeded to BLOW THE HOUSE DOWN!!!  Dust was settling in all the drinks of those yuppie come latelies and their faces were covered with a very fine soot.  Manager got ###### and then we went out to the parking lot and popped open our Foster's oil cans and had a helluva party.  My favorite venue

well on topic Roosevelt Stadium despite the dust and heat was the best and If I remember correctly we had a show in 68 on our way to Detroit that was actually a rodeo pen with a gazebo in the middle on the 50 with dirt instead of grass.  This was an actual competition!!  Could it get any worse?  Can't remember where that was...somewhere in Ohio..lol

I agree. Fortunate to have grown up there. And to have frequented many diners, many times.

The Reo in Woodbridge, right down the road from the show site... the Edison Diner about 15-20 minutes south of there.... two good ones. I'm sure we'll end up at one of 'em after the show.

Believe or not where i live now their idea of a good diner is Denny's....😝🤬
