  1. Maybe Boston will be treated to a rehearsal at Mars :) That would be cool.

Good to see corps coming out west. SF is a beautiful city to visit. Whenever I travel (europe, asia, US), and people hear I'm from the San Francisco area, more often than not the response is that San Francisco was that persons favorite city to visit.

I'm sure the kids in Boston will like it just the same.

Kids can catch a Giants game, eat oysters at Hog Island, run across the Golden Gate, stand on the runners on a cable car as it goes up and down steep hills, catch killer views from Coit Tower or eat at Top of the Mark with their amazing views. Better yet, hang out on the beach, cruise through Golden Gate Park, hang out in North Beach (go to Molinari's Deli and get the North Beach Special).

I'm sure they'll enjoy the city.

  2. Congratulations to the members of the Cadets for an outstanding competitive season. You fought, persevered, and provided great competition with your performances.

To my friends (i.e. the guys I marched with); Steve Bentley and Gino Cipriani. Congratulations guys on instructing the 2011 DCI Champions. I know you worked hard and the motivation you provided came thrown. Nice job and congratulations!!

  3. No worries on the BD haters, it comes with the territory. Without the internet BD was getting hated on in the early 80's when we went back east. Having people come up to us and flat out saying "you guys suck". The east coast is a different world from the west coast, although we have our idiots too. We just dealt with it by striving to win.

Being in BD, you expect the criticism and just have to go out and perform the hell out of the show and let the results speak for themselves. If you lose, no excuses, go out and be better.

Those that are complaining about scores and placement basically are far more concerned with the outcome of a show than enjoying the performances. I think what fries most people is there is no "Pretty Picture Caption" or "Runs The Most Caption" or "Average Beats Per Minute Caption". Until those captions exist, there is no requirement that one out run the other corps. They just have to be better :)

  4. I go to rehearsals once or twice a year. I haven't been to a show in 4 years. I just don't have that excitement to see it anymore for some reason. Would love to see the alumns at the show but I just haven't felt like going to a show.

I'm guess I'm a fossil as well. The electronics and such don't bother me that much. I know the hornlines are spectacular and the shows are complex. It just doesn't grab me like it used too.

  5. I grew up in a town next to where my favorite drum corps is from. Saw them on TV, saw them live, so their competitors and nothing was even close. The uniforms, the shows, the incredible hornline.

I was just #### lucky to live in the town next to Concord, Ca. Even luckier to be able to have marched in the Blue Devils A corps for 5 years. Wearing that cool uniform, experiencing the performances with some amazing hornlines (especially 82 and 84).

    I never considered another corps.

  6. Did you march in a corps that won it all?

    Yes. 1982 Blue Devils

Did you take high Drums or Horns yet fail to win finals?

Yes, several times. Won brass 81, 84, 85 and lost finals. I wasn't in the drumline but they won 83, 84, 85 when we lost finals. In fact, I believe it was the first time that a corps with the highest scoring musical ensemble (drums + horns) did not win DCI (84 and 85).

Would you personally trade one for the other?

Interesting question. Would I rather have won DCI versus winning a caption? Yes. I don't think the drumline would've though. Would I trade winning a caption for winning DCI? At the time I suppose so. Now? Nope.

What would give you the most personal satisfaction and pride looking back on your drum corps career?

Well, I have the perspective of time so I know what gives me the most satisfaction. The pride is the mere fact I spent 5 incredible seasons in an amazing drum corps organization, the Blue Devils. We collected a lot of hardware.

What satisfies me the most has nothing to do with winning. Sure I hear "cool, you won brass" or DCI or something to that effect or the years I marched. The most amazing thing to hear/read is how somebody saw one of our performances and it was their first time seeing a drum corps show, or perhaps just their first time seeing the Blue Devils and the impact it had on their life. They remember that moment. Some wanted to learn how to play a musical instrument because of that moment. Some have said they wanted to be join a drum corps or they wanted to be in no other corps other than the Blue Devils because of the experience of one of our performances.

I think that is beyond cool. That brief moment of performing for a crowd and at the time not realizing that you were impacting one or more kids who looked at the entire corps as something so incredible they wanted to be you or have that experience. To see that some followed through on their dream then later write about seeing the Blue Devils at some random show on our tour and how it impacted them.

That is something beyond the ring.

Coming onto DCP every so often and seeing posts from people I've never met talking about one of our performances. Something we did 30 years ago and people are still talking about it. And talking about it with references that it was the most incredible thing they've ever seen or the best performance they've ever witnessed. That's pretty satisfying.

The experience of those summers, the competition and amazing performances. I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything.

  7. When I marched (early 80's) BD and PR were in the midst of their rivalry.

The rivalry between SCV and BD during that era was a friendly one. The organizations are an hour apart, so it was not uncommon to have SCV visit our rehearsals. The members of the corps often went to high school together and college together. The BD staff at the time either marched BD or SCV. We wanted to best each other, but off the field it was a just hanging out with friends.

  8. Good confirmation, I thought SCV prior to Gail's passing ONLY played CLowns after Pacific Procession and Finals and only if they won.

They typically played Clowns at PP and Finals in the early 80's from what I recall. I do know they played Send In the Clowns at Precision West in 82 prior to leaving on tour (I have it on video). This was Blue Devils home show and the last show in California that year.

  9. Pacific Procession 1983 was at San Jose State University... It was televised by a local station... KNTV? KTVU? KTEH? something like that... These stations are for the most part out of business... Does anyone have a copy of this show or does anyone have any idea where to start looking?

My Dad has a tape of that show. I think I might have a copy of that, will have to check.

  10. on the brass caption side of things. Steve "Stymie" Lenane won high brass 5 times with BD (80, 81, 82, 84, 85). 4 of those years as lead soprano.

    Dave Tuttle won high brass 4 times (76, 77, 79, 80)

    Todd Thacker won high brass 4 times (77, 79, 80, 81)

    I won DCI once (82) and won brass 4 times (81, 82, 84, 85).

Not that any of that matters to the OP's question.

  11. I believe Lee Doebler (Sowers) of the Blue Devils won as a MM in 76, 77, 79, and 80.

    Yeap, along with Dave Gibbs.

Lee marched in the 81 Blue Devils, so she came close to getting that 5th ring. Brenda (can't remember the last name) also won 4 rings with Lee and took 81, 82 off then finished her age-out in 83.

If she marched 82 she would have that 5th ring as well.

  12. There are several stories about the "incident".

From what my SCV friends said the snare line was in a diagonal line, not parallel to the front side line, which gave the impression they were facing BD (drummers were facing front sideline). The drum major had to be on the BD side of the retreat block to conduct so the snares could see him. The SCV sop trio (which is the picture I have) is facing Blue Devils with Garfield in the background. Clearly with their backs to Garfield.

I remember as we [ BD ] trooped Garfield, the SCV DM was in front of Garfield issuing the apology.

We were floored. We didn't know what to do other than applaud.

  13. I can't list 10 things, it's too hard to whittle my list down to that small of a number.

Having said that, 84 Garfield's company front out of nowhere would be on that list.

I can remember going into the stadium many nights just to see how they did that (we [ BD ] toured with them that year). The flurry of motion across the field, visually overwhelming with that great horn sound, movement, movement, and WHAM company front. No idea it was coming.

    That was simply amazing.
