  1. In closing, I would just like to say that SCV was probably the best overall corps of the 80's

Keep in mind Vanguard's 81 win was by .3. Take away the BD drum score and BD is up by 1.7 points! If BD placed 8th in drums, we won. SCV deserve the win as they were more consistent across the captions due to the BD purcussion anomaly. However, it's a tenuous victory.

The streak I think that's overlooked is Blue Devils 79-84 streak:

    79 - 1st

    80 - 1st

    81 - 2nd (.3)

    82 - 1st

    83 - 2nd (.6)

    84 - 2nd (.1)

6 consecutive years of being in the top 2. The years the corps did not win, they didn't take 2nd by much.

Expand the streak from 75 - 86 and you've got 12 consecutive years of top 3 finishes.

  2. @ FHdork

The posting of the prelims video on "... that site" is me. I posted what is the closest thing to what finals looked like. Just a mere 24+ hours later.

I know there is a finals video around, I saw it a number of years ago. It's a GE box video similar to prelims. We were on fire that night.

  3. I marched in BD that year.

Drums were down by 2 points to the Bridgemen and we lost DCI by .3. If we had Bridgemens score we would've won DCI by 1.7. But, it takes consistency across all captions to be the champion and that's what SCV had.

Blue Devils had a monster hornline that year along with Madison.

    • 1988 - I saw this corps many times and that hornline was just so cool to listen too.
    • 1991 - Again - that hornline was just amazing. The blend, intonation, and timing was incredible. Plus the music was just jaw dropping with that impeccable sound.
    • 1998 - The opening minute was amazing. The swell of sound going from the small ensemble to a field filling sound.
    • 1986 - One of the best drum corps shows of all time. The epitome of a Blue Devil show.
    • 1980 - Amazing horn sound and soloists. The music was too cool.
    • 1979 - Raw power from the hornline and the beginnings of a new sound with the arranging and solo work.
    • 1982 - The best hornline I ever marched in. As Tony state, one seriously ticked off drum corps that had it's sites set on one thing. It wasn't winning per se. It was being the best drum corps of all time that others would talk about as long as drum corps was around. Winning was the result of achieving that goal.
    • 1984 - the 2nd best hornline I ever marched in. Another angry line that had the could rival 82 Blue Devils with the ability to crank out hell on fire performances night after night. And what do you do with angry Blue Devil horn lines? Well, feed it a little La Fiesta and see what happens. We ended the "Concert" era with the best Concert tune possible....and backed up by a killer drumline.
    • 1985 - A refined hornline. One alumn thinks the ultimate drum corps would be the 86 BD show with the 85 hornline. That would've been scary. Too bad we couldn't march.
    • 1994 - Blue Devils return to their winning ways. The show was so new plus the Star Trek uniforms were quite a departure from the previous style.
    • 1981 - Not sure how we did it. But we won horns and almost won DCI. Listening to early season recordings of 81, you would've thought we would be lucky to make finals. Wasn't pretty.

  4. Thanks, that was a fun and very competitive year. Sounds like you were in BDA at that time?

Yeap. Two of my roommates from college were in the SCV hornline that year (Jamie Godwin, Tim Browning).

Yeap, you guys took away any thought of an undefeated season. I think the next time you beat us was at DATR and then after that SC owned BD the rest of the season except for the hiccup in Rockford.

  5. One that sticks in my memory was the 1982 show in Bayonne, NJ.... the long, thunderous standing ovation for the Blue Devils after they absolutely tore the place apart that night.

Yeap. I think we were told that was the best performance ever by a BD corps up to that time. One of our season goals.

From what I recall, the Bayonne crowd treated us to a standing ovation as we entered the stadium prior to our performance. We had that "killer" performance that night that we strived all season for where everything just clicked. Marching, brass, percussion, guard. Every section was "on"....and to a crowd that ate it up the entire show.

We also had an incentive that show. It was the show after Garfield beat SCV and if I recall, was the same day SCV broke the record score at DCI Canada they set the year before at Nationals. One of our season goals was breaking the record score set by Vanguard. One of our staff pumped up the corps in the only way he could...feeding our egos. He wanted us to make a statement that Garfield was playing with the big boys now and we were the only corps they had not beaten. We were going to be in their sites and we had to make a statement that we were going undefeated and by besting Garfield by a large margin, sending a message to SCV.

Aside from the competitive aspect of things. The performance we had that night is something that I hope everybody in drum corps can experience as a member. The level of performance. The crowd feeding off of the show and giving back with their response followed by the explosive standing O at the end of the show that night.

The feeling of standing there and having that feeling you just experienced a performance of a lifetime.....is something everybody in drum corps should experience.

  6. 3. Beating the Blue Devils at DCI Texas in 1985 and realizing I was marching in a drum corps that just beat the Blue Devils. THE BLUE DEVILS!!

That's funny you mention that Jon. I have a vivid memory that night watching your performance. I was sitting in the stadium with two rookies. They both grew up in the BD organization (C - B corps) and were all about the A corps. They were 15 years old on their first tour.

Anyway, we were sitting together and these guys made a comment akin to "SCV sucked". You didn't at all that year. Just the competitive blinders they were wearing that day.

I have this vivid memory of looking at them and saying "think about that statement and how it applies to us. Vanguard just won the show".

Sure enough. You guys won the show that night and deservedly so.

  7. Are you going to deny that BD cut 2 sops at the beginning of second tour in 83?

Are you going to deny that BD sent other members to recruit lead sops from Madison to fill those holes?

    Just try.

Sounds like a challenge that's unknowable.

We did not cut 2 sops in 83. One sop was let go.

As far as sending members to recruit lead sops? What do you mean? Did BD fly members to Madison, have them run over to the buses during tour? I don't understand.

and.....I'll venture to say, the answer is NO!

  8. I can't wait for the moment this thread dies. Seriously, it stopped being productive discussion days ago.

Achieved my goal. Got 10k views :)

At least a couple must've been a corps director. I can imagine at least two corps directors saw this thread based on certain responders.

My message was sent, assumed read. The counter arguments and attacks...well...just made the thread bigger to read.

    Thanks
