Just maybe, a legitimate shot for the elusive Stanford in Ft. Mills?

    Be still—wait for it—my beating heart🥁👑😉

I've heard more than a few people say it...

"Other corps have been dreading the day when Crown finally has a Sanford winning line"

I don't necessarily agree anymore as people know I'm a huge fan of the percussion but in the past, there were definitely a few years that they would have been almost unstoppable.

A Tarpon Springs, Florida color guard audition? That's Michael Shapiro territory.

There were some Tarpon Springs vets in the guard this past year (think 5 or 6) so it's not surprising at all really. Florida is a GREAT recruiting ground for guard.

The Rennicks and JD Shaw left Phantom Regiment in back-to-back years for Santa Clara Vanguard. I honestly don't remember any Regiment fans being disgruntled, only sad. There was no talk of poaching, as far as I can remember. Even as SCV passed Regiment competitively, I don't remember any ill will. Just one anecdote, but it has parallels Crown/BAC in some ways (e.g., Regiment was pretty consistently top six at that point and only 2-3 years removed from a title, while SCV wasn't).

It seems that issues with Crown toward BAC are unique.

There are PLENTY of Crown fans, including myself, that have never had a problem with Boston after the staff change. As you said with the Rennicks and Shaw, it was sad to see them go but I was more excited to see what the changes would bring to Crown and Boston. I had the same excitement to see what the percussion changes at Crown this past year would do as well.

I have NO problems at all with people at Crown that consider Boston a "rival" (and vice-versa) as they have been battling each other for the medals for the last few years. DCI is a competition and that type of rivalry is great I think. But those that don't like the other corps because of the staff change from 7 years ago now...come on now! Get over it cause it's like toddlers fighting over a toy.

How much do you think the talent pool for guard and percussion are going to skyrocket for this upcoming season?

I don’t know how either group could have their talent “skyrocket” if I’m being honest. At least on the percussion side, yes it was an ENTIRELY rookie line to Crown this year but the talent level was incredible. I think it was 3-4 age outs in the line but from talking to some of the guys finals week, everyone had every intention of coming back. BK had a very good retention rate on their line during the Jackson years as well (some of those guys are on the staff now) and Broken City also keeps members coming back so these guys definitely know what they’re doing. I know a few of the snares made the Broken City line (not surprisingly) and I’m sure the others are marching other world lines that aren’t on the other side of the country and more around them (assuming they do WGI this year).

Will more people come out to audition for the percussion? Probably. But there are so many great groups out there and all are actually very different so it just depends on what the kids are looking for really. The talent level across the board is crazy in percussion now and there isn’t really a top 12 group with any members that aren’t really good. I’ve said it many times the last couple years but it’s a great time to be a percussion fan in DCI (and WGI)

TL:DR…Crown’s percussion is in a great spot

Drove past Vista Murrieta high school yesterday on my way to the crib. Band was on the field rehearsing, he was out there.

Could only imagine what it's like to be in a high school percussion program headed by Jackson and Shah with other Broken City/Crown staff as your "techs". Just crazy!

#6 bass drum for Crown was a high school kid from Vista Murrieta high school. He just started his senior year last week.

I remember hearing that. Also even more impressive since he joined the line after spring training as a replacement for an injury to the original bass 6.

So this is surprising to me and I'm curious why so few returning ageout vs rookouts? I get COVID year but they still had a crown season so it seems weird that a destination group and not a stepping stone group has that much turn over. I'd lose track of how many people march Blue Stars and then go to Bluecoats (alot of old Bluecoats teched at stars atleast in my time) but then they age out at coats after a couple seasons.

The top corps will almost always have more first year age outs than the rest just because they are a top corps and some kids are looking to finish their DCI careers in a top group. It's more rare to see the 3+ year age outs just because there aren't many 18 year olds or younger that can make these top groups. For this year specifically, for percussion anyways, I don't remember seeing a single returning member in the battery this year. I'm pretty sure it was a rookie Crown line but almost everyone (if not everyone) marched DCI before or at the very least a WGI world line. But they had 3 age outs in the battery so all were "rookouts" with Crown. Young line otherwise though so could get a few 3+ year vets on there if they keep coming back (didn't hear anything from any of the guys saying they wouldn't be looking at coming back either).

Pretty funny to think back when we were all pissing and crying about the percussion scores. The future is bright with Shah and company!

I confronted as many people as I could about that. People just wouldn’t listen when I said CHILL! These guys are GOOD! Just breathe and let’s see how it all ends up. 3rd in drums in just the 1st year of the new staff? Hell yeah!

Congrats to the staff on such a great design and challenging book, but more importantly for the summer the members got. I got to speak to a few of the guys on the line Thursday and Friday who could not have been happier with the summer and the environment at Crown. Plenty of memories were made that won’t be forgotten. THAT is what it’s all about.

To the members, thank you! That stadium was absolutely rocking because of YOU! I can’t wait to see you guys do it all again next year and in Dayton for that matter!

    CMFC! EAST COAST!

This is why the hype over the Allentown scores was laughable. This was always going to be the result come finals week.

I wouldn’t say it was laughable. I mean until tonight Crown was keeping things interesting with Allentown, Pittsburg and the Prelims show and that was all in the last 7 days. Am I surprised BD is looking like they are headed for #21? Definitely not. Their visual program alone will win it for them (Bluecoats have a great one too but unlucky BD has this program this year).

Just remember, a win tomorrow night will be BD’s first EVER three-peat. They may have 20 wins under their belt but they also have 12 silvers to go with it. It’s obviously very wise to bet on BD, but you will lose that bet every now and then…

Random question, has BD won without winning a caption award before? Going into finals, I thought it could happen this year but they’ll have some hardware. I honestly can’t remember the scores and can’t be bothered to look them up right now but the Brazale must be theirs as will the Angelica as well (maybe others too). Seeing them a few weeks ago, I thought Crown or Boston could upset BD in the Brazale (Crown and the Ott is BD and the Brazale). But wow, night and day difference in those couple weeks! Those feet are CLEAN!

My guess is that one judge is focused on brass and the other is on percussion.

It’s just like GE in a sense with GE 1 and 2. One is a Brass judge and one is a Drum judge but both judge Music Analysis to cover both backgrounds but they judge the exact same sheet. The judge with the brass background doesn’t just focus on the brass and let the percussion background judge focus on percussion. BOTH judge the entire ensemble.

    4.     Carolina Crown 96.975 * (2ndLush horn line and I think I am beginning to follow what the prancing guys are doing.  BTW, I thought King Arthur got stabbed, but he seemed to be OK by the Crown set.  Can somebody tell me the story?

    5 parts:

    1) Arthur taking the throne of Camelot (pulling Excalibur out)

    2) Basically the development of Camelot and it’s Knights

    3) The love triangle of King Arthur, his wife Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot

    4) The “meltdown” of King Arthur into chaos in Camelot leading to Arthur being stabbed and wounded

    5) Arthur is healed back by his people and Camelot returns to its glory

VERY roughly speaking, that’s the show this year.

I read your comment in the show thread and it made sense. Others were just doing it because they haven't liked Crown all year. I know you like Crown this year a lot so it wasn't directed at you

I bet it’s a mix of the two honestly. Some will just not like the show which is fine. Others still have recency bias of Crown being in 4th over and over again so they just go to that I think. I remember a lot of people saying this was Boston’s best corps ever (I actually agree) and they find themselves in 4th… just shows how good this top 4 is this year.

Percussion continues to be a grab bag after Cavies in first. Crown now back to 5th when they had a string of high placements the last few shows.

Honestly I’ll take 5th with Brooks if I’m Crown. He had them 7th back in Texas. Finals will be the real interesting one as Davila has scored Crown high recently so we’ll see. Sanford is 1/3 of the way to Rosemont, IL though…

Agreed. I think BD throws some cold water on the haters by putting .75 or higher on Crown tonight.

I would honestly be surprised if Crown is within 1 pt of BD. I'm hoping they are obviously and think Crown is definitely good enough to hang with BD (as are Boston and Bluecoats) but until BD is beaten, they will stay favorites.
