  1. I would argue that finding the right staff mix and keeping them is what makes a successful impact. The Troopers are a good example. It is their second year with Dean Westman, Gordon Henderson, Ralph Hardimon, Mitch Rogers, and Daniel Wiles and look at the show design between 2008 and 2009. I can only imagine what this design package will deliver next year.

Another point worth mentioning is that i feel a consistent staff is really what makes a drum corps successful. Look at the Blue Devils. For the most part the educational staff has been the same an the design team has been the same for a while... and look at their success. Carolina Crown is another success story. They have had a pretty consistent staff over the past couple of years and they have been successful.

These aren't the only corps too, but a few off the top of my head

On the "for what it's worth scale"

An article from the Casper paper earier this month said that Fred Morris has already hired back the entire design staff team as well as all of the caption heads.

  2. Here's a reason close to home why... May 19, 2003, combat operations - Shatt Al Hillah Canal, Iraq

Posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain, 1st Lt. Timothy Louis Ryan, a music major in college, joined the Marines to play percussion in the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, an elite ensemble also known as The Commandant's Own.

Judith Ryan said her son loved traveling with the corps to Paris and all over the United States. He also found a new love in the Marines: flying. This was something of a surprise to his mother. "He said he would love to fly things, but when he was a kid he said he would like to be a chef, too, so who knew?" she said.

Ryan, 30, of Aurora, Ill., was one of four Camp Pendleton-based Marines who died in a helicopter crash May 19 in Iraq. He is survived by his wife, Michelle.

Will Lahvic, who was in the high school band with Ryan and followed him to Illinois State University, called his friend an "honest, straightforward guy" and talented musician. "He was into drumming, but he fell in love with flying helicopters, too," Lahvic said. "He died doing something that he truly wanted to be doing."

He was a Madison Scout prior to enlisting.

    RIP Captain.

  3. I'm really hoping that the 6 or 7 guard members that stuck it out last summer are marching this year - to reap the rewards of what had to be one of the most difficult summers ever for a guard!

Of the 18 that were on the field last year for semi's, 8 did come back and will be on the field tonight along with an '07 vet who was injured in all days in '08 and was unable to march last year. :)

Of the 28 there tonight making this piece of history, only two age outs!

    So I'm told.

  4. Anyone who is in the lead at this point (BD, Phantom, Madison, Troop, Mandarins) in the year is getting a push from the system. However, Troop had every disadvantage for most of the summer because they had to go on first. Often they would go on in second out of eight corps when Madison and Colts got better seeding. Time and time again the judges thought that Troop had the better product, which has finally put them in the driver's seat for Thursday and Friday.

It comes down to captions, and Troop just has the edge. I'll give Colts Visual Ensemble, I'll give Troopers Percussion and Field Visual, and the rest of the non-GE captions are a coin toss. I honestly believe that Troop has the show to win GE in this grouping, which will seal the deal.

From the looks of things tonight they will have to do it again... (sigh) Lets hope it is with the same results as most of the rest of the season.

  5. Agreed. Troopers are not performing, executing, and putting in the hard work to beat the Colts, who obviously are doing all those things. And everything the Colts do is perfect, from the uniforms they wear, to their DM and the way he carries himself during retreat.

(Do you see how ridiculous you sound?)

Psssssttt, play nice. Her son is the Colts DM.

  6. Um... Clovis, Glendale, Rio Rancho? BK was 5+ up on Troop each night at those shows.

Tonight was 4.45. Sure, it wasn't 3 or whatever it was last week, but it's holding pretty steady I'd say. This is Troop's best output at this point in the season in several DECADES. I'd say that's something to be excited about!

Trooper color guard .1 behind BK. Some good things happening there?

  7. I wonder what the tweeter finds boring about the Gmen? I think people have cast Glassmen into a "catch phrase of....if they don't like them than they are just "boring". No one ever seems to say why they are "boring"! I think it's a cop out personally. If you are going to throw that kind of a statement out there...please back it up. Yes....I realize that even the Glassmen used the catch phrase "Boring" but come on people that was 8 years ago and a totally different style.

Odds are that the OP was giving his opinion, couple that with your screen name and your post and

    Irony is so........... well, ironic.

  8. ...not so much here....

'twas like watching a film strip with a good soundtrack.

From BK on, I was just hoping for a decently quick upload of the 'on demand' show to watch because the video was so choppy.

...oh well, maybe when the book comes out...

Just how long DO they take to upload them? Is the delay because of the weekend?

  9. I really enjoyed both of the DCI corps at the event.

Troopers looked large, and that was confirmed by Fred Morris, who said that it's the largest Troopers ever. Color guard was dirty, but much more effective than they've been in past years. Drums were on par with last year's line, maybe a touch better. I was really impressed with their brass. Heard some individuals, and like any performance this time of year, there was dirt, but their overall sound is loud and biting. They've got some problems with the marching technique, but plenty of time to work that out.

Show concept was really clever. The mix between classic Troopers-style programming and West Side Story came off very well. I especially enjoyed fusing Rumble from WSS and the gun fight from Billy the Kid.

This is as good as I've seen Troop at this time of year since I started watching drum corps in '96. I expect some good things from them. I'm sure finals will be as (if not more) competitive to get into as last year, but I'd be lying if I said they didn't have a chance.

I'm a Trooper mark (step one of the 12 step program) and I was over at their message board where it was mentioned that the Troopers guard had a unique outfit this year. Could you comment or give your impressions?

    Thank you.
