  1. I'll take that bet.

This time of year the numbers are much higher than you think. A slow DAY is around a hundred. Some days can get up to 200 - 300 e-mails per day, almost all of which have an expectation of immediate response. Topics range from "Can you give me directions to the stadium?" to "I hear there is rain in the forecast, is tonight's Murfreesboro show being canceled? (And, just what is your rain policy?)" to "My dog is sick, how do I get a refund on the spare tickets I bought last October?" to a 20 page manifesto on "How woodwinds are ruining drum corps."

Oh yeah... and dozens of e-mails from Trooper fans about how Quarterfinals order of appearance is determined. (Disclaimer: I am a huge Trooper fan dating back to the early 70's.)

And, do you really want your urgent/important questions being answered by a Kelly temp (who has never even heard of drum corps before)?

Are you speaking from a position of direct knowledge/experience in the front offices of DCI or speculating?

  2. I'm 16 so I am just old enough, I am contemplating marching an open corps but still that would be difficult for location. I've marched with guards and winterguards for 4 years now. So what corps would I likely be able to get into with no previous dci experience? Don't get me wrong, I've been trained well and have been waiting a few years to be ready. And I have a love for it, but again, age and experience, so I don't know the odds, but getting out there and auditioning is my main goal. And I'd do anything to march.

The Troopers currently have two 14 year olds in the guard with no prior DCI experience and it would be a safe bet that they will be recruiting soon. Just another consideration. Get in on the ground floor for something with lots of potential. Good luck!

  3. From your other "Tantrum" thread:

"... Of course at this level, few care... because after all, it's not the top six."

Fight the good fight, Granny. Many, including me, are with you. However, I fear (as history has shown us) that it will fall on deaf ears. Because, after all.... it's only the bottom six, not the top.

  4. From a thread a few days ago...

I guess they only missed it by one performance, Granny

Does anyone know if Academy changed their drill or visual program in any significant way this week? It just seems odd that they would have lost GE visual to the Troopers by 3 full points one night and then turned around the next perfomance and beat the Troopers in that caption. Can this simply be a case of one bad night or did something change?"

Great question. I think everyone who is watching this one is waiting for tonights head to head to respond. Kind of a biting your tongue type of thing. Many suspect what is going on and are waiting for confirmation of the inevitable.

As for me, I doubt a swing that large, in one night, has much to do with "it all finally clicking" or "something changing".

Of course at this level, few care... because after all, it's not the top six. I suspect that Granny cares and is one of those waiting for tonights scores as she is biting her lip, waiting to unleash a new fury?

  5. Pio's ballad sounded pretty good, but it seems like they just can't do anything else with that closer.

Quick question- why are Troopers going on BEFORE Academy when they've been beating them all season long?

It's that "Random draw" within their "group" thingy...... (insert your eye roll here)

  7. "wasn't Troop's DM that year in a military academy??

Mark Crimm, at the time, was an Air Force ROTC Cadet at the University of Wyoming. He has since been commisioned as an active duty Air Force Lieutenant. LT Crimm is currently the tour director this summer for the Troopers... at least until then end of this month, when he must leave tour and report to duty.

Good luck and God speed, LT Crimm. Thank you for you service (on many, many levels).

  8. While it sounds not good, I can tell you that musically things are excellent - well advanced for this time of the year. I know that anyone who wants a world class guard experience will get it with this year's corps in spades. Just because they have holes doesn't mean the guard isn't performing good stuff and doing it well.

I've been pretty quiet about the Troopers because being a honk can be annoying to other DCP folks. But trust me, I'm honkin' loud and proud in my heart. This is going to be a fantastic 50th anniversary year. (another good reason to go march with one of the original founding corps of DCI!)

As a former member and instructor would you say that, ("hypothetically" speaking)........ a guard show that is written for 30, that has to be re-written for 24, that has 18 guard marching by camp, that has the guard not marching the first public appearance because it's being re-re-written into the show, that has less than half of the previous 18 shown in pictures from a second pre-season performance, couldn't help but be reflected on the judges scoring sheets?

I too am a huge Trooper mark and I guess this is why them asking worried me so much at this point in the game. I guess we'll find out in a few hours.

  9. Of course, the biggest complaint in previous years was poor live streaming. I can't remember any stream that went off without a hitch for me, so we'll see how DCI has worked that out. But so far so good. All of these improvements make me a heck of a lot more confident about DCI having worked out the streaming problems going into the season, and I do feel better now than I did this time last year.

Here's hoping for a great season for those of us watching the action on our computers!

Or, given the monies spent, will the addition of the other things make it easier to stomach... should the streaming issues still not be resolved?

  10. What was cool about that era was that the single awesome performance was evaluated on its own - no consideration about who had beaten who the day before.

Actually, that was probably the end of that era....

ps - the Brass-GE judge's tape from that performance is on the 'America's Core' trailer website - I am not in a position to put the link up...

    From another thread...

    http://www.americascoremovie.com/multimedia/trailers.htm

Click on the link Teaser Trailer-First Generation. Good stuff, Maynard

  11. Ah I get what you mean now. In that case, yeah I agree the list of auditionees (shared only with staffs of other DCI corps of course) could help a lot. I have winessed at least a couple of instances where something like this happened (sometimes holes were filled by members calling a friend that they knew wanted to march, etc.).

Not sure how that works in the less endowed corps, but it would also help them in the earlier months (the hundreds of people who audition BD and Cadets etc and end up not marching anywhere, just might decide otherwise if the caption head at corps X calls them and asks them to come out)

It's my understanding that this is exactly how former members of the Cascades and Southwind are currently kicking ### with the Troopers brass.

    edit for spelling

  12. They cut two snares for showing up to all days unprepared and then the next day one more snare blew out his achilles tendon. 7/4/5 is a much better size for them. 10 snares would have been trouble all summer long and even if they got that clean it would be too loud for the horn line to balance too.

    all will be well...

    Cool, thank you.
