Depends which Corps is caught.  A Soundsport group with aspirations to Open class would be DQ'd, but a top 6 Corps would earn a 'wink-wink-nudge-nudge say no more'

Like they do with criticism earning a DQ vs sexual assault of members that earns at best lip service of a member safety policy.

It appears that there are different standards for different groups

$1 for the obscure Monty Python reference.  Nice! 😊

I think the guard issues also had to do with how other corps started using guards - they became integral parts of the story and were used / staged accordingly.

I always felt that Cadets just kept the same formula that worked for them in the '90's  where weapons were up front, flags in the back and weren't fully integrated to the theme / corps drill.

They almost seemed like an afterthought - the entire "Awakening" show should have been a guard heavy concept - but it fell flat.

That said, I do think the guard program is headed in the right direction and that last year and this year - the guard as a whole are much improved - but still lack in total integration

I thought back-flip tap-dancing Jesus was integrated.

Boy you lose one show to BK and the sky is falling.  What happens if they lose to Blue Stars or Mandarins next?

Cadets will be fine but they cannot design along the lines of a Dartmouth indoor show.  Sure it works great in the indoor setting, but not on the drum corps stage.  They need to do better.

I see what you did there

Scouts website lists a BOD of 9 people, including CK. The Boston Crusaders seemed to have figured something out over the past several years. Their website lists an 8 member executive board and a BOD of 35 people! I'm guessing those 43 people have a whole lot of contacts in the Boston financial sector and tech hub -- $$$$ -- and some may be members. It costs a ton of money to successfully operate a top level corps these days and that isn't going to change going forward. Are the Scouts just hopelessly outgunned in this new era?

Most non-finalist corps are, I would imagine.

Questions a board of directors should ask:

    • Are the customers happy? Safe? What's our retention level? What feedback are we hearing from the members, and what are we doing to respond to it?
    • Are the bills being paid? Are we financially sound?
    • Are we achieving our mission?
    • Are we in compliance with DCI policy, board-governance best practices, regulatory requirements?
    • Is the executive leadership accountable to us? Do we have a succession plan in place?
    • How much more money can I help raise?

Questions that a board should not ask:

    • What's the show design?
    • What is our ranking? What scores are we getting?
    • How about those uniforms?
    • Are the alumni happy?

There is one significant point of crossover between these two groups of questions, not only for Scouts but for any corps: The single most potent recruiting tool you have for next year is the show you put on the field this year. So if the show design is hurting your audition numbers, it's time to put the CEO on the spot. But if the customers -- i.e., the members -- like what you're giving them, then the audition numbers will be there, and the board needs to keep its nose out of the show.

And, while good relations with alumni are better than poor relations, the board does not exist to serve alumni. It exists to serve the members. At most, the alumni should have a third-party relationship with the corps. It can be positive, most crucially financially, but the alumni are not central to the purpose of the corps, and as such should not be a central concern of the board.

I would add one thing.  One would have to know what the current by-laws that cover that board/organization give them the power to do.  If the existing by-laws restrict what others are saying they should do (and that is what they as a board have the resolve to do), then it would seem that their recourse is to either change the by-laws, or to resign.

Does anyone have any information on the July 11th 'special performance' in Casper? I'm considering a car camping trip to WY and thought it would be neat to see the Troopers in their hometown. The 2019 show doesn't have much appeal for me but if there's a chance to see a more traditional expression of the corps, I would definitely plan around it. Thanks!

No info about this year, but for the past several years, they've held the Hall of Fame ceremony at Ft Caspar and the corps arc's up in uniform and plays through the show for the public after the ceremony; but that's been it.
