  1. Sorry, but this is a thread about the UW band. Its really very simple. Either look through this thread for one of the many times someone has linked to the bluecoats finals thread. If that sounds overly complicated to you, then type something using the words 'bluecoats' 'finals' 'drunk' and/or 'retreat' into dcp's search function, and im guessing you will find what you need. While you're at it, go into a Philadelphia Eagles thread on ESPN.com, and ask them what happened at the 2003 world series. Be sure to let them know that you dont care about their team...if you did, you would just go to the official website

Well someone initially mentioned the Bluecoats. Sorry that I am not very computer savvy. I looked under several things, someone mentioned looking under finals retreat. I didn't realize that their were other corps under fire. I just kept searching drunk, vomiting Bluecoats. Never found a thing. Don't remember what happened in baseball 6 years ago as I was raising 3 kids, all boys, so I do care about baseball, and will certainly look it up. I also have or had a child, a drummer, who marched DCI 4 years, each year he has mentioned something that has happened at retreat, sounded like friendly heckling between corps standing next to each other. It does so happen that he was an ageout with the aformentioned corp this year. He was with our family, stone-cold sober, eating pizza shortly after retreat. In the time frame prior to that he was saying good bye to his girlfriend from another corp. We as a family left as soon as the scores were announced, as we personally find all of that standing around time very boring. I agree with someone back in the August threads that I read tonight, about several things. The most important being, forget the horn players, and I have two sons who play horns, get the drums going, people dancing in the stands and it wouldn't be boring and time for "stuff" going on during retreat. Another, do the drum really play higher and lower "notes" in America the beautiful? And if someone can fire a jolly rancher hard enough to dent a drum corps horn, the maybe "they" should be playing baseball instead of the drums! We found out about the one kid right off the bat, my child wasn't drunk, throwing up, or passing out, so why would you assume that any 21 year old, or group of them has control over what any other 21 year old does.

I just read Dave's apology tonight as well, and after spending two full weeks with them at their training camp, I can assure you that the BC director and director of operations, attemp to run a very tight ship. However if someone needs a babysitter, perhaps they should stay home with their mommy.

  2. The blucoats incident is just one of MANY I witnessed or was told about from no less than 4 other corps. It seems that there is just a shift in general in the behavior of members. Now this could just be a fluke that all of this occured in the same year, unlike previous years where the incidents have been much more isolated, but I don't think it is. I think there is pressure on the administration of corps to have a more "cool" atmosphere and be more hands off disciplinary wise. Doing whatever it takes to attract more talent. Personally, I couldn't stand it. I don't care who you are or how good you are, you get s-faced on corps time and youre in for it. It's up to the corps to balance outside perception with competitive achievement. Unfortunately in this country we tend to react to events rather than spot trends and nip things in the bud. Hopefully, the behavior of members of those corps at finals this year will be the event that spurs those changes. No corps should have to feel like they are sacrificing talent because they have rules.

Wwhhaatt wwweeerrreee the incidents?? Simple question. I don't really care about UW band or I would be on thier website.

  3. I didn't see any links to that thread here. I'm not in this forum a lot so maybe I just didn't see the topic, but if it has relevance to this subject I don't see why we shouldn't. I'm with MK on this, if these were isolated to specific people then those people should be punished. What's really missing here is the details. That would make all the difference.

I sure never saw a link to the BC's "incident". Would you mind pointing it out to those of us who missed it. I searched DCP keyword as well. Not out to get the Bluecoats, just curious what you are referring to.

  4. Geez, your college days were better than mine!

Can someone tell exactly what the Bluecoats did and when? We have been able to read about the UW band, and the New Mexico football players, now that was really disgusting. but since this is Drum Corps Planet, what about the Bluecoats? Is is a secret?

  5. Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you all know that last night I received news that my Mother

was killed in a car accident. My Mom and Dad were celebrating their 50th Anniversary

yeterday with a day of golfing in northern Wisconsin. On their way home, a car heading

in the opposite direction hit a deer, launching it through the passenger windowof my Dad's car, killing

my Mom almost instantly. My Dad is o.k. (a few scrapes) but absolutely devistated,

as all of us in the family are. I'm flying back tommorrow to be with the family and

start the incredibly hard greiving proccess. I would appreciate all your thoughts

and prayers as we try to mend and heal in the coming days, weeks, and months.

    Thank you.

That is really awful. So sorry for you and your family. We will keep you in our prayers. You know you have a huge drum corps family thinking of you.

    Colts and Bluecoats alumni mom.

  6. Hi luvinmydummin,

Welcome to posting on DCP. This is definitely a place where if you ask for opinions, you will get them. Many posters have given you really good, non-offensive answers to your questions. As several have mentioned, strong associations with a group make it extremely difficult to be 100% subjective, certainly if you are fairly new or young to the activity.

I too preferred Madison over Colts & Crossmen. This changed over the summer. Early on I thought Colts to be demonstrating the most maturity and polish in their performances. There were some show issues that I feared would hurt them in Bloomington. Usually, more mature groups handle change the best. I thought changes would be made that would elevate the "what" and Colts would be in finals again with a fun, accessible show. The show changes to me made no difference or little difference. This doesn't mean the staff made uninformed or under-developed choices necessarily. I am sure they are very talented and well-intended. Phantom, BD, and Cavies staff members would tell you that they are too often get too close to their groups, or the activities current taste to know with 100% certainty that their changes are all going to work as intended. As with anything, experience in these areas typically up the success factor.

MANY years in DCI year past, you would have made finals. Too many great groups, and several that would have done anything to be in, including Colts.

So, I really liked Colts. VERY solid show. Lots of fun and recognizable music. The concept was easy to follow. Very well done. Preferred them emotionally to several finalists. Artistically, not as much. Don't look for any specific thing or person for 100% fault of what didn't happen; it isn't that easy and such can mess with your view of your experience. Though my perspective will be different than others, you may notice a trend of repeated dislikes.

Here is what I thought could have been improved:

The original opening was one of my favorite parts of the show, the changed version was too under-developed.

Opening guard soloist was conceptually too campy and very old school for me. Old school influence in a NEW way is great. This just seemed silly to me.

Following guard soloists, same reaction. Not the performers, just the concept. Reminded me of 1980s Dutch Boy years with big hair and Vegas.

Length of standing and playing hurt flow and forward direction of the show.

Swing got better by the brass, but still didn't sell. It is hard, but great when it works. Its is why corps do little to none of it anymore.

Though symmetrical drill is great and can be very effective, there seemed to be too much in this particular show, especially with how the guard was staged.

Not enough surprises. To much predictability.

Guard uni was also too old school and the guard guys should have worn something else.

Perc. book and horn book didn't aways seem to gel.

What I would not have changed:

Impacts were very solid and almost always appropriately supported by the guard.

    Music selections were great.

Show theme was well chosen and easy to follow.

Forms and intervals were pretty clean.

Much of the drill was very well constructed from an engineering stand point, with some good GE moments.

Communication and showmanship were strong compared to your surrounding groups.

    Drum major was very good.

Ballad was very musical and emotional.

Corps uniform looks great and always well tailored. (Not a cop-out comment. Many corps look ragged).

Pride seems to leap off of the field.

Colts got ripped on this deal. Crossmen had no business being in finals, and Scouts while a cool show was very dirty, I won't comment about what we thought about Scouts' guard. Seems like there was just such a big push to get Scouts back in finals, that that was how it was going to happen, just like BD had to get some caption awards even though Phantom was way ahead in every sense of the way. The judges just can't seem to not recognize the favorites in some way. Go Colts!!!

  7. Yup it was Debbie Torch'ya' plain and simple. . .not sure what her beef is, but If I were part of the Bluecoats organization, I would want someone within DCI to look into it/lodge a formal complaint. . ..her numbers for them have been bizarre ALL season.

FYI, she is no longer a WGI judge....she was quietly asked to leave, along with a handful of others

Regardless of the strength of BC guard, why would any judge of any caption, who was quietly asked to leave WGI, be asked to judge anything in any DCI class. Obviously there is a bigger problem there than her problem with BC. Don't know anything about judging, but doesn't sound like good business sense.

  8. i know, those were just my guesses.

crown did win last year, and i wasn't surprised. compared to my other years in my corps, i thought the '07 show was the one most likely to win the spirit of disney, but really though....ponies? kids love ponies. kids don't really like criminals, i dont think....especially when the "candy" isn't real.

I thought Crown was perfect for it last year, and I saw their show for the first time tonight, like the music, I could see them maybe getting it again, but my vote goes for Glassmen. The story about locking the little girl in the box was pretty funny. Makes me like the show better. It is a show I would expect to see at Disney World not DC.

  9. I've seen a lot of cheer threads for various corps and I wanted to get one going for BK.Their show may not be everyones cup of tea, but their performance level is great!!! The way that they've cleaned and improved after the 4th is spectacular. I have no doubt that they can catch a few corps ahead of them and I can't wait to see them again at the end of the week!!! I am so proud of the organization and the performance level of the corps and just want to give a big shout out to BK!!! GET EVIL BABY!!!! WAY TO GO BLUE KNIGHTS!!!!!!

    Wes Perkins

    BK '97 '98

Not usually a fan of theirs because of the darkness, but thought this year seemed pretty soft and mellow. Don't know the title of their show, so maybe I am missing something in just watching.

  10. OK, OK, I'm slow, not paying attention and all of that. But where is Southwind this year????

I was half expecting to see them at Big Loud Live tonight, but when I looked at the actual schedule, they weren't there.

How about Capitol Regiment? Have heard their name a lot this year, and some in the past, but can't find out anything about them.

  11. I am not sure if they have this award, but if so, my guess is:

    1. Carolina Crown - great show, fun, creative, and very well performed

    2. Bluecoats - great show, boxing theme, fun, creative, and very well performed

    3. Glassmen - maybe a bit more deserving than the top two, very creative and has that Disney magic to it, but not as well performed (although still very good)

    4. Blue Stars - great show on bicycling, very creative, great props and music, but not as well performed as the top 2, although still great.

My understanding of the award was that it didn't have to go to a show that was "cute" or representative of all things Disney. But it did have to go to a show that represented a wholesome, creative, and well performed show that exemplified class and entertainment for ALL fans. This is largely why Phantom may not win it. Their show is really for ADULTS, as great as it is (it is my pick to win), and I think people would have a difficult time voting for it on those merits.

If I was picking, I would probably say Carolina Crown. It's the most seamless of those shows mentioned above, with pretty much no major blemishes, very creative, fun for all, and the show just speaks to everyone in such a positive way...and it may very well be a top 3 show. We shall see.

    Haven't seen Crown yet.

  12. It is not a penalty. Every show matters. If you have an "off night" at finals you might get passed, that is the way it works.

Well when you have met head to head 4 times, and won 3 of 4 and tied 1, seems like your are gettting screwed. I am not speaking of a "penalty" literally, I am speaking of scores.

  13. From DCI.org

"The following order of appearance for the 2008 Drum Corps International World Class World Championship Quarterfinals was determined by averaging the scores earned by each corps at the DCI Premier Events in Denver/Orlando (July 12), San Antonio (July 19), Atlanta (July 26), and Allentown (Aug. 1 & 2)."

So if you had one off night but were still marginally ahead of someone else, you get penalized for a show 3 weeks ago?

  14. I'm not sure if this award is still around, but if it is... or isn't..... which corps might you think deserves this recognition?

I believe Crown received something like that with their creative pony show.

This year no doubt it will go to Glassmen with their balloons, and Dorothy running around in her cutsie pigtails. I believe it to be a bit predictable and high schoolish, but the crowd seems to think releasing balloons form your hand or a box is very much like any major fineworks display finale. Just my opinion which accounts for nothing. The crowd loves it, just a bit cutsie for me. But it would fit right in at Disney World Magic Kindom.

  15. Let's face it, the lack of vets is hurting them. You need that peer leadership in a Corps at this level.

I read in another post where someone was talking to a friend in the corps and there was an underlying tone of they were practicing too much.

Yeah, right. Practicing too much the week before finals?

Obviously this member has never had the experience of watching a show after the season and wishing they could have done something better.

The talent level is phenomenal but I'm not sure the desire or understanding is really there.

Time will tell...... but I don't think this year's group will like what it says in the end.

Wonder if the new vis staff wasn't what they thought, in addition to many guard just coming out of hs, the same as the new guard person, and rookie brass. Too bad for the battery. I think they will see what they had to miss out on. They were sick!

  16. It seems that all of the kids that perform are very capable at high level performance and I wonder if for example you pull a top 3 corps staff for a year to instruct oh say Pioneer, pacific Crest or Mandarins to see if the corps would indeed jump dramatically ( I think it would).... I feel all the kids are very strong in abilities and stamina thus leaving the real competition to the Designers, Drum, Colorguard and Brass staff. DCI = Designers Creativity International IMHO

I feel, and have always felt even through my kids high school days, that design staff is a huge factor. Obviously there will be different pools of talent at different levels. However, my husband and I have often talked about having every corp in a specific division (before we went to the two catagories), play the exact same music, the exact same drill, and perhaps even the exact same all around staff, all in matching uniforms, no corp names, would the top 5 always be the top 5? Just how would that play out? There are absolutely some shows that the judges and fans just don't find as appealing. How often has it been said, after listenng to a critique tape, "well they just didn't like the show"? I know of a show this very year that rehearsed a horrible design for weeks, obvious enough for a blind man to see, but the design staff just couldn't figure it out until it was on the field in front of thousands of people. Were all those weeks a waste of time? Not completely, but it certainly set the corp back from where they want to be right now. The kids obviously aren't perfect, even with fundamentals, the design staff are human as well, but they are supossed to be professionals, and I have no doubt get paid a lot of money, you would think they would pick up on a flop a little bit earlier. I can't think of anything more discouraging than these kids in corps or still in hs, working their butts off, and figure out the judges don't like the show the kids had put in front of them.

But if everybody did the same thing it would be boring. We love all the corps and love the competition.

  17. Greg Orwol just plain rocks. He was the biggest reason my son had such a hard time moving on to the Cavaliers. If the Cavaliers hadn't been his dream for nearly all his marching life, he would have stayed right there with the Colts. When the Colts lost a member last November to a car accident and another was seriously injured, Greg was right there helping in any way he could, and probably still is. The pep talks he gave those kids spanned not only marching but everyday life. My son stills mentions "Greg says......." when he talks about his life plans and even things like investing money. I just can't say enough good things about Greg.

Exactly. He is so awesome with the kids and parents. Drum Corps is always about the kids with Greg.

  18. I think overall Greg is a nice guy. I have however heard MANY negative things about him after the 2000 season, when Colts didn't make finals. I have heard that his speech after semis was less than nice, and he basically called the kids a bunch of losers.

I am guessing these were heat of the moment comments, but I do know several sets of parents who were extremely upset by this, and I don't think these were necessary comments either.

But I think the last few years, Greg has done an awesome job, and with all the extra stressful issues that have occured in the last year, I think Greg handled them all extremely well.

Seems like you just cantgetenoughofbeingnegative. Have you ever met Greg ? Or do you just like to stir things up?

  19. Well, if this is just what we want. I would love to see:

    1. Bluecoats

    2. Phantom

    3. Troopers

    4. Boston

    5. Mandarins

    6. Blue Stars

    7. Blue Knights

    8. Glassmen

    9. Blue Devils

    10. Cadets

    11. SCV

    12. Crossmen

not hating. I would just love to see things get mixed up a little. I get flat out ###### off knowing that the same groups will always be in the top 3. I want it to be a complete mystery at the beginning of the season. I don't want it to be like, "Oh my God! Blue Devils in 9th? THE WORLD IS ENDING!!!!" Competition is healthy. Constntly changing finals placements could save this activity. ***for the love of God please take this statement with a grain of salt. I am not implying doom, just saying that competition is healthy. We could use some.***

Bluecoats 1st would be awesome. Bluecoats percussion first would be totally awesome. Bluecoats 1 and Colts 12, would cover my little darlings this year.

  20. My family loves Phantom or PHO RHO as my younger kids call them. I am just an old drum mom, I don't get it about Colts are finished. We are personally involved wth Bluecoats and Colts.

Honestly we haven't seen many of the open corps. My child and his friends have been involved in so many corps, that we have a personal interest in almost all world class. It's all drum corps, so it's all good.
