I wonder if at least some of the performance issues may be a part of the seemingly revolving door of staff over the past few years. Seems like the corps has gone through several complete changes of brass staff lately.
A big issue with Crown for many years was that there was a new brass staff every year. Once Matt Harloff came on board and stuck around for a few years, things started to really take off, we see the results of that in Crown's success this summer. The current SCV brass staff comes from the same school of instruction as the crown staff (Bob Chreste, Andre Feagin, and Derek Gibson all taught at crown for several years, and Donnie Van Doren is the "godfather" of the Star/Blast/Crown school of brass playing) but its going to take them a few years to establish a program that starts to build on itself. I hope the corps doesn't go looking for a new brass staff for next year in an attempt to "fix" whatever didn't materialize this year. I believe some consistency would go along way at this point...
