  3. I voted 2007, great show with a lot of heart behind it. Something 2010 was missing.

Lastly, a word of advice. Stop worrying about designing shows that will win and go back to design shows that win the fans. I don't mean this to sound super critical or that I'm a hater ..... far from it. I love this corps and look forward to seeing you grow and succeed every single year. But, maybe it's time to take a step back and really look at what made your corps so well loved and successful in the not so distant past. Keep playing great .. keep marching better every year and the titles will come ........... but the overall drill design is what's biting you in the behind. Fix this one thing ......... and you will be unstoppable.

I COMPLETELY agree with this statement.

  4. We've learned that increasing numbers to 135 and 150 have hurt the lower tier corps for membership.

We've learned that the top 12 corps have benefited based on their level of execution and performance (arguably the best top 12 I've ever seen ... and I saw some stupendous top 12's in my day.

We've learned that no instrument manufacturer really wants to corner the market by making a trumpet that is modeled after the G Bugle ......... IOW an open, fat, big bore, conical design with a smaller bell flare with larger inner diameter. These instruments would have a massive aftermarket as well.

We've learned that some some directors have been in their position for far too long and should be replaced (regardless of their past contributions to drum corps).

We've learned that the hybrid shows that are heavily influenced by BOA and WGI are being highly rewarded ..... and is taking this activity in the wrong direction.

We've learned that the top gigs are having financial difficulties during the economic downturn. So much so, that they are willing to rop from the rest of DCI just to stay afloat.

We've learned that some directors have finally spoken up about the lobster and seafood buffet's at DCI events for their staff and corps directors ..... it is things like this that contribute to the massive budget of DCI expenses.

We've learned that corps need personal trainers and medical staff on hand due to the marching technique (straight leg) widely used today ... these techniques cause injuries to hipflexors, knees, hamstrings and other parts of the legs that were rarely a problem back in the day (even when we were doing wiplash drill.

We've learned that Pyware has resulted in almost every corps drill being extremely linear and symmetrical. This leads to everyone looking the same and is boring as all getout.

We've learned that some of the greatest brass arrangers in our history have forgotten how to write a chart so the performers play the entire piece ............ let alone a large segment without it ripping motif's and passages to shreds (yet still succeeding with it).

We've learned that some of the judging community have been passed by the genre itself .... and should go back to school or retire before they do more harm than good for the activity.

We've learned that greed and ego are more important than keeping drum corps alive and healthy and growing.

We've learned that some of the rules passed and tested have been huge failures. This being the case, why not revoke the rules?

We've learned that multikey does not project the same as G bugles. King has done a fantastic job with low brass instruments, but I have yet to see a trumpet that can push the same kind of sound as just about any G bugle I've ever played on.

We should have learned that with all the changes put in place this decade ........... the change to the activity has brought the inverse result of the leaderships hopes ............. DCI is going downhill by evidence of corps in existence.

We've learned that a 10 year deal for a finals location might have looked like a great deal going in ......... but has turned into a nightmare that we now have to live with.

I could go on for a few hours ............. but I dont' really feel like it.

I would say overall, we've learned that we're going in the wrong direction. For those who don't agree .......... I don't know when you were born, how well you know your history or what your opinion is of a "successful business model", but DCI is NOT success and has continued a downward spiral since the turn of the millennium. My best wishes to everyone outside the top 12 ..... I hope you find ways to continue your quest and stay healthy going forward. The odds are against you ... and that above all is what I have learned in the past decade.

  5. They were used relatively recently (2008?)and IIRC, I think it was by Glassmen (they weren't "big" balloons, however). I could be wrong about the corps and year, but it was definitely within the last 5 or 6 years and by a Finalist.

Yeah, glassmen '08 used small balloons

  6. Disagree - I think that corps today put on much more visually sophisticated shows (both in guard and brass) and that the WGI percussion explosion has generated drummers that play stuff that we could only dream about back when.

(That said, my beef is with *music* arranging in corps right now, not so much visual...)

    Mike

    Agree 110%!

Being a percussionist, I think the percussion books are starting to get WAY too thick.

As far as the guards go, I like it MUCH better than the way it used to be. Makes the shows very interesting.

  7. Have you thought about also auditioning for Blue Stars or Madison since they can't be too far from you? I agree with the previous poster, if you really want to march next season, you should audition for more than one corps.

I would also look at Blue Stars and Madison, both have upgraded their staff this year, and are set for GREAT seasons!

  8. This is ESPECIALLY true with Phantom! With all due respect to them, they do this kind of thing all the time. I've known several people that made it all the way to April or May camp only to find out that they didn't actually make it. At that point, it was tough to find spots in other corps (and let's not even discuss the money they wasted going to all of those Phantom camps).

I'm not trying to bash Phantom. Obviously this process works for them! I just want you to be prepared.

Let me clarify that the corps I auditioned for WAS NOT Phantom, although it was a Top 5 corps.

  9. I plan on auditioning for the Phantom Regiment in the fall on trumpet and I was just wondering if you guys have any tips, advice, practice ideas to prepare for drum corps, etc.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Don't set your sights on just once corps, audition for 2 or three. That is my only regret when I auditioned, I was short sighted and auditioned for a single corps. Got cut in the last round of auditions, found out I was 2 spots away from making it. :satisfied::blink::blink:  :blink:

  10. I went and tried out for a corps and on the first camp they gave you a number 1-4:

    1: Your in

    2: Your on the bubble

    3: You got a chance

4: Most likely not, but keep coming back if you want

After that they started cutting people, so the techs would take everyone individually into a room and tell them what was up. I was told that I most likely wouldn't make it but was more than welcome to come back for a few more camps if i wanted to.

  11. We might just be reaching a point where we can all just make up?

    Really?

    The tables have turned?

The tables really want to make up...well, the new ones do. They want to get to know all of us better over the coming week.

The recently retired tables...well, they are hoping for the new healthcare proposals include coverage for pre-existing conditions and for loss of work. Some of them are hoping they can possibly get coverage from the new GI Bill.

    Please, won't you...help...the tables.

    Wow grow up.

  12. Alot of corps do this for there 8's exercise because it is more relaxing. I know I have my drumline do it because of this reason. The whole point of the 8's exercise is to loosen up, so the more relaxed your body the better the warm up you will get. Now we only do it for 8's, the rest of our exercises are done marking time.

  13. I am at the DCI show in Atlanta on Saturday and I was bored out of my mind. I've marched for years in corps from the 60's up to 2002 plus I attended music college.

To me these corps want to run faster than ever on the field , with no power, since corps back in the day with 30 horns were louder than 70 person lines today.

The music to me seems like a bunch of guys wanting to get their masters in composition. They take a melody and mix it up and twist it so that it hardly if ever resembles what they say it is suppose to be. If I want to hear west side story then play it... Next thing they will do porgy and bess, but make it a happy one, with country and symphonic overtures, with various key changes, Brilliant. Back when drum corp was in the business of entertaining (I know a bad thing) people came to shows to enjoy it and they did not have to be a middle, high or college marching student to understand it, they just came to be entertained. Most at the show were students, people who have marched or parents of kids in corps. People around me said this would be their last show, since they did not recognize one musical piece.

Bring back the entertainment of playing loud and having regular people get excited about watching drum corp.

I agree, all drum corps should play the same exact composition of every piece of music. No no no!!!! It would not get boring...

  14. How about people holding up cameras in the middle of performances?

Phantom is coming onto the field, and two people decide to sit infront of me and my friends for the performance. So, right as Phantom is announced, then both pull out cameras and start recording. So, me and my friends are like "whatever...." and let them do their thing. They then proceed to hold their camera above their heads infront of our faces. So I lean up and politely ask them to put the cameras down. Then she starts taking pictures with her flash on, and starts holding the camera up again. So i then lean up and turn her camera off for her. They then moved to their seats and left us alone for the rest of the night.

Atlanta had the WORST crowd ive ever been to.
