  1. Count CC out at your own peril. This corps means business and the crowd loves their show...period! Execution is CC's only flaw at this point, but they have a staff that can get it done. Speaking of clean....the harder show (IMO) to clean is Cadets, this is a beast of a design.....however, 2009 was another monster that they never quite got cleaned... mostly because the human body can't do some of that stuff (George :satisfied: ).....it's a matter of physics!

Cavies are having issues breaking away from their present place while the other 3 are forging ahead. Not sure why, maybe performance, dirt, can't say....but again, they have the staff to get it done and it's not nearly as difficult (IMO) as the Cadets insane drill book.

BD on the other hand, was rough out of the blocks due to the early Texas throwdown which took them out of their groove (in California everything has a groove  ). But they have found their stride and although (as you might suggest) their show is a a bit askew of the other 3 in terms of "insanity" (which ironically, BD owned the last 3 years) it is a classic and beautiful design musically and visually and they are the best performers on the field right now....and they will only get better (of this you can be certain).

NOTE: Last night (at midnight) I observed an empty corps bus parking lot in Hattiesburg, save one corps.....BD (all of them) sitting in the dark watching films (played against the side of one of their trucks) of their performance with stop action and a "hot wash" going on. Look in the dictionary for "focus" and you'll see that picture!

Bottom line: count no one out....particularly CC & BD!

Well stated. Any of the top four could win, and BD is doing serious catchup. BTW, BD did the same at the shows here in CA. Should be an interesting finish.

  3. I've been a fan of the Blue Devils for 20 years and I am still a BD fan. I've worked for the Blue Devils. But this year, in my opinion, they are being given far too much credit. It seems obvious to me that at this time, they are a fourth place corps and apparently, the DCI Judges are trading on the BD name and history when they should be putting Crown and Cadets ahead of them. Neither Crown or The Cadets are getting the credit they deserve and BD is being given too much. Dear DCI Judges: I've checked it out and believe it or not, it's not illegal to put Blue Devils in fourth place. The world will not come to an end. Blue Devils deserve all the success they've received up until this year. It is obvious to me that BD simply doesn't have a top three show this year. DCI Judges: please be honest and fair and stop letting corps name and history mark your judging sheets for you. It's just not right, in fact, it's a form of cheating. I'm just asking that you have integrity and be fair and honest to ALL corps. It sure doesn't seem at all like that is what is happening in the standings at this point. Do the right thing, DCI Judges. Do your job the way you're supposed to do your job: be impartial and fair to ALL

Wow, this one wins the recreational whining award so far this year. Or the best sarcasm that I have read. Not sure how to respond.

  4. And the joke was missed by all..... Where's that sarcasm pirate?

in all seriousness, I loved BD 2010 musically. I like the jazz stuff, would have like more brass, less pit, but I'm getting that this year. Each year since '09, they lower the amount of pit breaks, and add more horn parts, and that makes me a happy brass nerd.

sorry, i missed that as well. removed my other reply.

  5. A wiser person than I told me that BDB and SCVC could reasonably expect to be somewhere around Teal Sound. That jives with about 10-12 points. I would love to see better, but my expectations are not as high.

Does kind of argue for Open and World being scored the same. Would make it a bit more like a sport.

  6. BD2010: Quite possibly my favorite show ever... Amazing music, in spite of the not playing tunes that are easily recognized. visually stunning, almost painfully clean, mirrors: unbelievable addition to the theme, etc... No way was another corp close. In spite of those that complain about how easy the show is, it is very demanding.

BD2011: trailing, but I think that they are surprising a lot of people with their show. The music is fun, not dark like the last few shows. Perc line is pretty darn good, and they still have a lot of room to improve...

Some of the other shows are so simple to get that it is kind of like watching or reading a mystery. Good once, but not so good after that. BD shows for the past few years have challenged the audience to watch them multiple times to really appreciate them.

Of course detractors will never like them, but they are not really the target. BD remains on top of their game, and the other corps this year are on top of theirs as well.

    Best to all,

A BD FAN, unashamedly, unabashedly and proud

  7. Well,

first of all, we do lack the flaming nature of the other forum. We have fewer fans, and far more reasonable ones. I actually like the lack of people here acting like the world cannot exist without their expressed opinion. Furthermore, most open class corps have a lighter show schedule than world. In fact, some have already ended their season.

That being said, DCI treats open class a bit poorly. IE Championships in Michigan City, then a travel day to Indy. We already had a thread that included what I think of MC, and I don't want to repeat it here, but even the organization does not treat Open with as much respect. Before anyone lets me know that there are large financial reasons, I understand them. DCI has made Indy their new home, except for Open Class. World is marketed poorly, but far better than Open. Try buying a Bluray or DVD from last year, or ordering one for this year. While I am at it, try watching Open class in a theater... The answer is that possibly you can see your corp on prelims, but after the champion is determined.

Bottom line, don't be surprised to have a lack of responses here. I personally prefer Open Class much the same way that I prefer college sports to professional sports. And this year seems to be stacking up to be a very good year competitively. Just a couple of points separate the top corps, and I cannot wait to see what OC gets on their next competition.

  8. While they do what they do very well, from a design perspective they take the least amount of risk of any top corps out there.

If your program is strikingly similar year after year after year, what is there really to reward from a design perspective other than level?

Cadets, BD, Crown all take much more significant risks year on year than Cavaliers.

agreed. But the cavies have a rabid following.

  9. Well, IMO, 4th was still too high for that show. Anyone else doing that show even with similar execution levels is looking at 6th or lower, guaranteed! Just so you don’t think I hate all things BD, to me, BD 88 was AWESOME!

wow, 23 years ago you liked the show BD did. hardly an endorsement, especially how this year's entire corp was not even born then. Back to the topic, the cavies are the favorite. No question at this point in time.

  10. So I take that as $2000 from your mom.

    That aint't a bad start.

Cut grass, wash cars, babysit, wash houses, paint houses all make money and in the fall you can rake leaves, chean gutters and such, in winter shovel snow ?

Of course that means less time on the internet and DCP, but, it is what it is.

Most brass and percussion players can seek the answers within themselves, woodwinds, not so much

priceless. First laugh of the evening.

Nice to see a positive review, thanks for posting!

  12. The variety of the shows this year is pretty amazing. So far, I have only seen the shows on the west coast, but each show is unique, and very different than the others.

SCV: Dark, but then they run people around the field... and the ending is really visually good.

Cadets: Turning the entire horn line into guard with them twirling swords. Great Moment.

BD: Love the music this year.

Blueknights: Had to miss them due to other duties, but I enjoyed the music from a distance.

    Open Class,

BDB's show is really really good. Hope they can clean it up.

SCVC: Very strong again, as usual. Should be very clean in another month.

BDC: Cutesy. Corp seems a little older this year, but very fun.

VK: Baseball in a football stadium? Fun again..

Revolution: Great look and huge corp! Liked them a lot. Should be a lot of fun later.

  13. I call it as i see it. BD's music last year was excellently performed crap, and most fans agreed.

    Alex,

You presume a lot when speaking for most fans. I disagree with you entirely. But more importantly, your argument is petulant. Recognizing whining is very easy, but still the whining gets annoying. But, you remind me of a politician that does not have an answer, so refers abstractly to "most" people or most of my constituents. Take it up a level...

  14. Good to know we have are priorities in line here...

Dear kids, all that matters in the arts is whether you win or lose. Who cares that most of your audience doesn't appreciate you, we are winning.

kind of took that way out of context... The comment was about downey "losing" it. Took a long time this year to get a complaint about BD's music, but I guess that you simply cannot make everyone happy.

BTW< I have their CD. Really like the music this year.

If BD does not win, lets congratulate whoever does, and give them the credit. Come to think of it. let's do the same if BD does win.

Great show tonight. VK was fun. Vanguard was smooth as always. But BDB performed with a PURPOSE.

They left little doubt who the top dog was on this night. In my opinion, the spread between first

and second should have been closer to 2 pts. BDB swept every catagory (except for Mus Percussion,

but still won the overall percussion catagory).

Good Luck to all the corps in Concord tomorrow night.

    Cali.

Wish I could have been there. Looks like the NorCal corps did themselves proud!

  16. Ron H. I bet if you go to itunes and download the four pieces used in the show and listen to the entire pieces you will get a better grasp of the music.

All 4 pieces of so beautiful in themselves. And on youtube you can watch Greg Anderson perform The Devil's Staircase. It is amazing to watch him play this piece.

This show deserves to be at least in the top three. Let's hope they get there!!!

top 3??? From 7th? What do you base that on? From what I have seen (saw it in UOP, Stanford, Clovis) the show is pretty dirty, and not very original from a marching perspective. The music is ok, not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate it. I understand die-hard fans supporting SCV and "liking" the show. But visually, the show just leaves me pretty flat.

  17. I think one reason they went with Michigan City was that it is fairly centrally located. I think this is why they have gone with Indy for finals for World Class for ever into the future. Sure, the groups from the coasts have to travel, but it seems to be a reasonable amount of travel. I'm just guessing at this. I just think if you held it on the west coast, you would have lots of groups on the east coast not compete due to the economic realities of a crappy economy and high fuel prices. Likewise, if you held it on the east coast, maybe the same problem occurs for the west coast corps. Plus, if it is going to be this format where they want open class corps to compete in Indy anyway, you almost have to have it somewhere close, and Michigan City is only a few hours away. Now, Maybe the answer would be to try to get a hold of a nice college stadium, and there's plenty that could host a great show in the midwest (Bloomington comes to mind), but I guess that would cost DCI more money, so we make do with what we are going to have. I don't know what the crowds will be like. I know from a playing standpoint we really enjoyed the show there last year. The stadium is definitely loud, I do remember that.

But these are just my opinions.

Actually, I think it had more to do with the Lucas. I can travel to the east coast for hundreds less than Indy... As you might surmise, I live in Northern Ca. As for the rest, I do appreciate your opinions. I think that the stadium is loud because it is tiny.
