  1. I hope the TB can make it this year. It was dissapointing that you were unable to attend the O-Fest last year due to the tour you were doing ... where was that again? I think it was somewhere near Fargo. Or was it the fact that you took a left on I-94 instead of a right and simply got lost in transit?

Oh, we were there in LaCrosse last year. We were declared champions without even playing a note. The banquet was held to the blaring trumpet of Molly Busta and the Pettibone campground was rocking with sounds of frivolity. I really don't remember BSA being there though.

  2. This is a great topic. We went through the same thing last season where we had an extremely demanding show and couldn't break into the top four because of it. This year we played much simpler music and won. I think the bottom line is execution and effect is what the scores are made of. If you don't execute because your demand is higher, you won't get the score. If you don't get the effect scores because your book is too simplistic, you won't get the score. It's the drum corps conundrum (conundrum corps?). If the answers were simple, the game wouldn't be as fun. I would rather play the challenging book to a demanding drill as well, but my motto is SCORES SHMORES, so I really am not the guy to tell a drum corps how to do their gig. Winning is fun, but the experience is what this whole thing is about. ...and besides only two corps get to win, so the odds are pretty steep. Good luck to all of you in your drum corps journeys. It is the best times of your lives!

  3. There will be some changes. I will not be performing my trumpet solo during my brass/percussiion duet. I am not that good of a multi-tasker.

It was not Dick's fault...someone else registered me for the duet and they used my real name for that (like people know me as Jim Snyder in drum corps  ).

  4. Yes, the awards have been kind of comical the last few years. They're actually more like gifts because the awards are aimed at the corps instead of their placement. The hose idea actually came from the Pioneer show in Milwaukee a few years ago. We won a garden hose and proclaimed that we got "hosed" and the rest of the season we would chant "Hose, hose, hose" whenever it was the funny thing to do (which was often). Glad to see that you made it back to MN for our show, Barb! Hope you're going to DCA, it's going to be a showdown this year.

  5. Bring it on you Canadians.

    America, F___ Yeah!

Can't wait to go into battle against you cats. You guys have a great organization and it's an honor to have a throw down with you.

Goes for Fusion Corps and Gold, too. This is going to be way too intense! I'm going to need a defibrillator on the sidelines for my sorry, old butt.

DCA is going to be a hoot!!!

    Practice hard folks!

  6. Actually, I was saying that DCA should be scheduled within the next two weekends (not scheduled for two separate weekends). This eliminates every limitation that DCA has. But of course I see that some DCPers do not see any limitations, so I reiterate: colleges generally start the week before Labor Day, thus preventing students from marching in DCA and making the corps smaller (especially for those students who are not already drum corps experienced), teachers already have begun teaching making it hard for them to do DCA (especially those not living in the Northeast), the weather usually sucks on Labor Day weekend (it's hurricane season and almost always rains), and DCA can only get bids from inferior stadiums (football season has started already on Labor Day weekend thus those stadiums cannot be used, therefore no bids can be submitted).

Now if recruiting people to be into these DCA corps, weather, and better stadiums are not important to the activity, then status quo, baby!

I think the audiences will grow due to all these advantages as well: better venues across the nation, bigger and better drum corps to watch, and beautiful summer weather.

Honestly, I'm not trying to be a smart ### (well..maybe a little), I'm trying to help the activity. I think drum corps needs to be completed during the summer for all these listed reasons plus I like the summer. Going into September is not the best way to do this. I really don't think the DCA championships are as perfect as some suggest and when you start believing that, that is when the activity gets stale. Yes, keep the championships away from DCI weekend and yes, make sure there is a couple of weeks for corps to load up, but I think that is all doable and needs to be explored. Then maybe the DCA championships can start traveling around the country and grow into the national organization it wants to become (another topic for another day).
