  1. To answer your question, Frank, yes this topic has been brought up in the past. It generally has the same results: Nothing.

I agree that if DCA wants to be truly a national organization they will need to move up the Championships to avoid school conflicts, especially for those that need to travel. Our corps has many school music directors and they are saddled each year with paying for plane tickets because they are already working by Labor Day weekend. We also lose most of our newly graduated high school seniors when they realize that our schedule overlaps with their first week of college. It's a shame when people can't do drum corps because of that reason. It's suppose to be a summer activity.

Also, if DCA wants their championships to be held in a football stadium ever again, they will realize that all football programs are in full swing by September. I really don't mind marching in baseball and soccer stadiums, but I think football fields are more audience friendly with the most seats located by midfield.

I personally think that DCA in two weekends would be ideal for everyone, but I also know that DCA will never change. It would be too unlike them. Tradition trumps logistics every time.

  2. You DCPers are cracking me up. If you don't title your thread with something eye catching like "Kiddie Corps", no one will read it. That's why I titled this as such.

Q: How can we make a controversy where there is none?

    A: Post it on DCP.

Now analyze that, you "drum corps experts"!

Come watch DCA corps, they're really fun!!! :satisfied:

  3. Maybe I sent out the wrong vibe (or DCPers provided their own interpretation...which is not too surprising  ). This isn't a jab at the juniors, this is a homage to the other remaining American drum corps circuit. DCA is a beautiful thing (so is DCI, of course). This will be my 23rd year of doing senior corps. After 13 years of junior corps, I had no intention to ever march again, but here I am at 48 still doing it. DCA rocks!

Don't ever be shy about coming over to the green Govie school bus at the championships (or any other show). Come visit me and the Govenaires. We love making new drum corps friends. Come over and see the freak show they call Smoothy.

    ...and bring me a beer!

  4. With the passing of DCI finals, it marks the time where the adults take the forefront.

I am looking forward to a huge push to Rochester. We're finally coming out of hibernation with our 2009 show, Summer of Perversion (or something similar to that), and we've been chomping at the bit to perform in front of real people again. I know that we have fans show up at rehearsal and they are real people, but that was practice. Man, we're talking about practice (Thanks AI).

We return to the competition field next Saturday in Racine and get to see our Kilted friends for the first time (they have been hibernating, too) and the MBI powerhouse. It's going to be a DCA blast! Get out to Racine and dig it!

See you all then, it's been way too long of a break between shows this year.

    I love drum corps!

  5. My point is that you can't base a corps' position on their previous season. It's not fair to the the California corps because they don't have a DCA circuit. It could affect their start time adversely if they have a weak previous season, not to mention wreck the whole rhythm of the show for the audience. The rule is not logical. Every year is different for every corps. Right? That was my only "try" there, Mr. csugrad. Sorry, if I wasn't clear.

  6. It's not an issue of "substituting" full membership. It's an issue of the possibility of a corps that has set a goal of being Class A Champion, a goal that they are hoping to use in their DCI-centric part of the nation outside of the NE to their advantage when it comes to recruiting and fundraising, and not being able to obtain that goal, ironically because the judges see the corps as too good. It's an issue of having different definitions of success. Making 10th place in Open Class seems to be of no benefit if the only DCA show your corps can attend is the Championship. Bragging about being a DCA Open Class Finalist means nothing when the majority of your fans have no clue what DCA is, and especially now will probably equate DCA's Open Class with DCI's Open (ie, lower) Class.

So when you win Class A in DCA, it improves your recruiting and fund-raising. I wish someone told us that two years ago. We obviously missed that part of the gig.

Honestly, it's an honor to go out to the DCA championships to compete against such incredible organizations from around the country. It always amazes me on how similar every drum corps is, no matter where they come from. The brotherhood (and sisterhood) of drum corps is what this whole thing is about. Who gives a flying leap what place the judges put your corps in or what DCA rule affects your outcome? It's about performing to people who don't get to see your corps much. It's about gaining friends and fans from across the country. It's about performing your show for one last time, striving to make it better than ever before. Yes, competition and scoring is important to drum corps because it makes each individual corps better, but if you live and die on where your corps is placed, you've missed most of the beauty of this activity. This is my thirty-fifth season of drum corps and if placements and scores were what drove my drum corps career, I would've never made it out of junior corps. I urge you to go to DCA and have fun as a result of your hard work and maxing out your final performances, not for the scoring.

I just thank my lucky stars that the season doesn't end in the middle of July in DeKalb anymore.

    ps - SCORES SHMORES!!!

  7. Not that it matters, but your "exemption rule" would have us going on after Alliance if we didn't compete in a DCA show this year. It sounds like an incentive to not do DCA shows after a successful season. Or better yet, it sounds like a lame way to slot Califonria corps on their previous year's successes or failures. Not very logical, guys.

But on a lighter note, it's coming real fast and I can't wait for the final drum corps bash of the season! Good luck to everyone on their journey to Rochester and be sure to come by the green bus with the racing stripe and say hello.

  8. DCA has the right to chose its own rules. We have been dangerously close ot being too small to compete in DCA the past three seasons. This past weekend we had 37 marchers at our two shows and that's only because our caption heads had to march this year. If we don't have enough members to compete in DCA, we regretfully bow out and go entertain crowds some place else. It really isn't that big of a deal. Rules are made within every circuit and their members must adhere to them. There really is no reason to believe that the people running this circuit did not thoroughly debate each rule in its doctrine and each corps in DCA needs to respect their decision or go elsewhere. It's not like DCA owns the rights to all drum corps. It's not like audiences of drum corps are unique to DCA. Either abide by the rules or do drum corps elsewhere.

  9. To quote Smoothie...........Scores....Schmores!! All I know is we had the best performance all year on Sunday night and the crowd was on their feet. You could feel the energy on the field and we all had a blast doing what we do.

We're gonna do it again for DCI this Friday night in McKenzie, TN and then on Saturday for DCA at Music City Metal II. The only scores I'm gonna pay attention to are the ones we get on Saturday night, but I plan on entertaining the crowd on BOTH nights!!:shutup:

I'm hearing you! Let your drum corps transcend from scoring. Strive for perfection and understand that scores are the educated opinions of a small minority in that stadium.

...and it's spelled "Smoothy" to differentiate from the drink they named after me.
