  1. I don't know.... I feel kinda pathetic at times sitting here hanging on to every tweet when I could be living in the "real world". Its Friday night people! And we are (almost) all sitting at a computer instead of "olive Garden".

well, there is a viagra commercial on. does this help?

  2. Answer honestly....Is it as prestigious as it used to be ? I mean, now what 22 corps on a homogonized tour, all corps assimilating into one basic styl and approach towards show design.

Is winning DCI, or scores in general as prestigious as it used to be.

winning in 1986 was over a huge slate of corps, now its almost status quo. I might not be making my point but if you agree or disagree what do you think ?

    Geoffrey

Sure it is. The whole activity is more demanding now. Look what was being asked of the performers and designers in 1986, and look at now. There are fewer corps, but more contenders for the title. Look at how hard it is to break into top 4 and what has to be accomplished to get there, and tell me that's not prestigious.

  3. I'm not saying the corps are spreading H1N1, because who knows what's going around, and some corps that have had sick members tested have said it is not H1N1 influenza, but H1N1 has swept through many summer camps and similar programs this summer, in what news reports are warning is a harbinger of coming attractions for this coming fall for the rest of us.

The junior drum corps age group has no natural immunity to H1N1, as many of their grandparents do, so it spreads easily among young people. Despite overwrought media reports about H1N1 last spring, it has not so far (this could change) been more dangerous or had a higher mortality rate among infected people than any other forms of influenza (all forms of which kill lots of people, though not many in the junior drum corps age range).

But it would be a very easy illness to spread in a drum corps environment (buses, sleeping in gyms, shared door handles, serving utensils, and so on). And the competitive effect of this is for real. You don't recover 100% from influenza in two days. You're sick for at least five days and remain dehydrated and lethargic for at least two more weeks. Not good at this point in the season if even 20% of your marching members get sick with it.

I can attest to this. I went to San Antonio and Denton and saw lots of folks from lots of corps. When I came home, I had what my doctor has termed "a virus." I was flat on my back for 3 days and I'm just getting up to speed almost two weeks later. If I got what they have, it is for real.

  4. In years past, one company front at the end of a show garnered great applause because it was a nearly impossible feat. Now, I think there's an average of about 12 company fronts per show per corps. What used to be a potent spice is now table salt.

Company fronts are so ubiquitous now, and appear to be so easy to do, audiences barely respond.

Which shows have difficult drill set pieces this year? Are audiences recognizing them?

I think a perfectly straight line that spans yards upon yards is about as difficult to pull off as one can get, considering how a lot of them are transitioned into.

And really? Maybe you're seeing something that's not there. Some corps don't have a single company front this year. Are you generalizing all for what you've seen in about 3 corps?

  5. I was going to go tonight, but I can't justify 6 hours of driving and $50 in gas for being in Centerville for a total of 1.5 hours (the focus of which is one 11 minute performance), only four hours to sleep after the drive back before work, and an exam on friday. Especially the way the radar looks.

But I seriously, seriously thought about it anyway.

What is it about us? We are totally insane or completely stupid.

  6. I'm with the Cadets from Giants Staium to Indy with my group of handy sewing helpers. We apparently have lots of takin in to do with the unis. Losing weight, toning up means more fittings......I'm ready for it!

yeah, really wish I could force myself to burn 3500 calories a day....sigh....Just not the same. :)

  7. If you didn't see this video, you should watch it now.

This kid just makes me laugh. It is pretty awesome.

What instrument do you think he will end up playing? Obviously some kind of drum.

That is pretty awesome. If he marches or not, he's fan for life. And if he's not getting any music education ot home or school, or arts education, or chance in his life to appreciate art, he sure is through Crown.

  8. OK, really dating myself now. When I went to Dana School of Music at YSU, we used to go to recitals at E.J. THomas Hall (its in Akron) - for $1.00 - I saw Sills, Horne, Pavarotti, verrett, Ashkenazy, Stern, and bunch of others.

Yeah E.J. is about a mile and a half from here...a dollar huh!! that can't even get you a smell of a beer anymore....

  9. Hi, Janelle!

We got to see her in San Antonio....she was tan and still looked tired, but she is LOVING the show and music! We are soooo happy she is having this experience for her age out!!

Going to Indy???? We'll be there. Hope to see you. (And I'll have to ask her to see the picture!)

    Patti

Yep I'll be at Indy. See you!
