  1. Not sure where I said otherwise. But the universal solvent can make things slide oh so much easier,

You're deflecting (coincidental, if you're fully aware of the situation) - you mentioned that it's a study in "can your drum corps buy you success" and I think the choices had a lot less to do with the money. Those other factors will have a much bigger impact on BAC's success.

  2. And third, I've never heard great things about the general vibe at lines he teaches at from the few guys I've known who marched under him. Of course, that could be hearsay as much as anything, so take that with a grain of salt for sure. But more generally, I just don't think corps-age guys really want to march under him any more. His prime was a while ago, IMO, so he's not the awesome young guy that attracts the best talent anymore.

Lee Beddis' vibe is good for the whole corps.

  3. It's obvious that Klesch was good for the program... but I never like these situations. It seems like a 'little sister' arrangement... and that's as likely to keep the group out of finals as keep them in, in the future.

I would hope that they will formulate some design independence in the future and consider the biggest boys as peers.

I know it takes time... but there's no better time than the present to start thinking like a super star... just ask Crown.

Not being facetious, but how much time did Bocook spend with Cadets?

  4. If Crown Percussion would have scored 19.6 in percussion, the total score would have been 97.55, that would have put them very close to the Bluecoats. Who knows how that would have affect the other captions. Its possible. I know they brought in Tom Aungst a few years ago, and it seemed they were killing it early in the season got over taken. The question is why does this keep happening with this program year after year. They had it going with Lee Beddis. Its just too bad. Bloo and SCV, how close was that. Wow. Good for SCV for bringing the trophy home.

If you flip Crown/BD Guard scores for Finals (which would be similar to Prelims, if I'm reading right), they wedges them into second (and probably puts them first in your scenario).

  5. Crown's hornline and marching are superb. How well they do depends on which drumline judges they get in finals. Not how well they play. Which judges they get. Caleb Rothe runs the Socal wgi drumline circuit and is a west coast judge. There are a bunch of guys from that circuit marching Blue Devils and Bluecoats. Could that make a difference?

The field drum judge is a "recent" Crown age out (within the last ~10 years).

  6. Re-watched a couple times. Like this vehicle just as much as last years, which places it among 2013 and 2009 for me. We will see if the performance excellence grows to match, but based on the level of talent, I have few doubts.

Love the opening, Roxanne, The Trio and the reprise. Can't wait to see the additions and the cleaning process take hold.

  7. You'd have to imagine that if the percussion were stronger, Music Analysis would also go up, though. The percussion section has cost this corps big time in the last few years. And not for lack of talent - it's a design and instruction issue. Time for a change? Probably. Just my $.02.

It may not have made a difference - BD jumped a half a point in that caption alone over the course of Prelims > Semis > Finals.

  8. I calculated crown's score if their percussion scored a perfect score and the rest of the caption scores remained the same. Here's what it looks like:

    GE: 38.95

    Visual: 28.95

    Music:

    Brass - 19.7

    Analysis - 19.7

    Percussion - 20.0*

    Music Total: 29.7

Final Score: 97.6 ....and what would the final results look like?

    1st - Blue Devils 97.650

    2nd - Carolina Crown 97.600

It wasn't all the percussions' fault. Visual held them back too.

GE 1, Brass, Guard, Visual Analysis, Music Analysis. Those are the most interesting numbers from night to night. The rest seemed at least fairly comparable.

  9. A powerhouse organization like BD has to have staff replacements already in place being mentored and groomed by the current BD staff. No way BD is going to wait till the current staff leaves and then starts replacing. I would be shocked if SCOJO isn't training his replacement, same with TJ Doucette, etc.....

Hasn't this been going on for like 30 years, too? They've got it down better than anyone else.
