  1. I never knew that my fame preceded me (Ha!). I do have to say, that there's not many things in life that are better than pickniking on the hill, watching the sun go down over the mountains in the background, and having the flesh peeled off your face by Crown's hornline 20 feet away. I so look forward to Crown coming to town each year. It is one of the highlights of my year. Oh to be that age again and have an opportunity to march with a group such as Crown (I didn't learn about drum corps until it was too late for me  ).

Hah, I remember in 07 when we found your post the first time (laptops + GW internet), and figured out who you were. We expected you for late brass block or early ensemble every night (just as the sun went down, of course). Good times, thanks for the support. :)

  2. I know what you mean, but I think (and this is purely conjecture on my part) that part of the body movement is indicative of the whole "grass is always greener" theme (i.e. switching sides, trying something new, etc.). I could be completely off base (I frequently am) but that's kinda what I gathered from it.

Nah T-Mac, you're usually right, and we love you for it. Hahaha. I just remember being on the field a couple times over the past couple seasons, seeing you (and occasionally I think your wife, as well) come up with lawn chairs and sit down, and thinking "Uh oh, T-Mac is here, play pretty guys."

    Heh.

  3. She's pretty awesome! Ashley isn't too social though! Keeps to herself, but is amazing once you get to know her!

True story. We horn guys saw it at show and tells during the camp season, though. Sick-nasty intensity.

As for CC5, they do sound as good playing and moving at the end of a block as they do standing still. Very exciting to see.

  4. Thanks...That was some sweet notes. Very rich. Good to see a girl on snare.

She's ridiculous good, and she has got a LOT of time left. If you watch some of the CrownCast vids, you can see that she's on center in a few of them. Her time will definitely come.

Oh, AND she's a Black Belt. LOL.

  5. One of my favorite moments in drum corps is when motion on the field stops and the corps, using only brass and percussion, tries to push a stadium about three feet off its foundation. Any shows come to mind? Which corps have given fans the most memorable "park and blow?" (Which year?)

    Only 3 feet?

  6. Unless I totally missed something, there's no draft for drum corps members--they are there voluntarily. So their decision to march with a drum corps that is obviously a lightning rod for criticism and hate is THEIR CHOICE.

It would, obviously, also be THEIR CHOICE to not read threads that will typically be critical of the show that they performed.

It's only drum corps, after all--you know, marching band on steroids.

Regardless of this, my statement still holds true, I think.

  7. Well, the whole show was kind of shticky. It's kind of Crown's M.O. Shtick

Simply my opinion: Well-written program, performed at a high level, and easily accessible to the audience. I think that the last detail may lend to the evidence against it for being "shticky." However, I still think a lot of stuff can be artistic AND accessible and not be labeled as such.

2005 BD: I thought it was a great idea having it backwards. Most judges tapes will mention "push to the end of the phrase" or "obvious fatigue in the members is starting to show".. but BD, rather than hiding this by making the end of the show the labored and tired parts, wrote the program for the show to be performed the strongest at the end. That's gutsy, to me.

Cadets, any year 2005-2008: I think we need to sit back and realize that they possibly are changing the activity in a positive way. Look at Star of Indiana. Apparently, in their prime, they were still being booed off the field for doing minimalistic shows (among other reasons of which the members had no control, including money). This era's Cadets may just be the same case. In 10 years we'll all look back and say "That was awesome. Period."

Lastly, sorry it seems as if I'm trying to defend everything you guys are trying to criticize, but I think there's a lot of negativity in this thread and I was just trying to share some positives, even if for the members' sake. I know that seeing your corps criticized so blatantly, and sometimes torn down so hatefully can be really, really disheartening, especially after having arrived home no earlier than 3 days ago from busting your butt for an entire summer.

    Just my two cents.

  8. The added narration at the end of Crowns 2007 Pony Show. The race narration. Dumb. Over the top. Poorly performed didn't add anything significant. Ruined the only good part of that show in my opinion. Ok. We get it. We're watching a horse race. Try to assume your audience is smarter than that.

I was pretty hesitant about this when it was first put in as well, but it has since grown on me.. a LOT. I thought it was tasteful, at least.

  9. Apparently no one at my school has heard of drum corps, as I counted about 7 other people in the theater, none of whom were students. Either way, I thought the Countdown was awesome. The 6 show that they picked were all wonderful, especially Crown's, and that incredible Kingsmen Alumni Corps. I loved what they showed in between the performances, and I thought they did a great job previewing the upcoming seasons of the Blue Devils (no narration ), Blue Stars, and Carolina Crown. What'd you guys think?

I had a blast, it was really a great time. I have a few pics to send to "DC-Eye" now. :)

  10. Sounds to me like a lot of you are over reacting. Yeah, big bottom sound, there is nothing wrong with that but please, oh please, little skinny trumpet players, can you blend to what the low brass is giving you instead of stagger breathing rather terribly here and there and everywhere? It sounds like there are only 6 of you. Six very little trumpet players. Half Teasing Half Teasing.

When people listen to this they hear a lot of Tubas and they shut their ears off to everything else. Inexperienced ears.

No doubt though that they will be a great brass line this summer, as they always are. I think they may almost be pushing the bottom end too much. Fans just need to relax a bit.

I'm pretty sure they put the mics in front of the contras for this recording, judging by the title. Could be wrong, I couldn't make it to that camp. I do like the way it sounds, though.
