  1. If I'm not mistaken Larrie Dastrup has one of these. DoubleHighEZ you out there? Also one of the late night talk show band guy's play's one of these (can't remember if it's Letterman, Leno or Conan's band). How bout that for impressive insight. From what I've heard this is a great trumpet for the purveyors of higher, faster, louder!

  2. Pink uniforms and Disney music. I was dissappointed with the concept when so much potential was there. But as stated, you guy's performed great and for a first year corps it made it all that much more amazing. Still scratching my head though.....I got a lot of money and Im going to start a drum corps and play Disney music. Did that one ever come up in the "if I won the lottery" threads?

  3. I like the tone that yamahas have, i think the intonation of a horn is for the most part, the responsibility of the player, although the horn can help and that is kanstul's strengths. I like the sound of the kings, but if you ask me they look a little funny, the contras and euphs anyways. I think the kanstul G bari was the best G bari ever made but DEG has made alot more inovations in their horns in the past couple years, especially compared to kanstul.

    I don't know about DEG's latest "inovation" but I have seen a couple of DEG sop's that are about 1-3 years old and I am not impressed with the quality especially when you consider the abuse a drum corps puts on them. I must admit the Blue Devils are starting to get their sound back that I feel was lost at the Bb transition. Kanstul makes a #### of a horn in tone, quality and performance. My favorite horn was the King K20 soprano from the 80's, a Ziggy Kanstul horn as well. I haven't seen or played the new King instruments but Phantom sounded great this year.

  4. To the Renegade sops who decided to take it up two octives in the middle of America, (note: this comes from me and my dad) It did not sound good!!!

    Don't just blame my guys - they were not alone...

    Great review!

    Unfortunatley I was not in the aftershow concert as I was attending to show managment duties so I can't be blamed for ATB skid marks but wait.......there is another in the review

    "Blue Devil "C"

    They even had a signature BD sop tag at the end."

    Guess who? B)

  5. First, thank you very much for clarifying my friend. I was thinking that yet again I screwed up my grammar!! So, cool!

    Second, I AGREE WITH YOU!!! That's for another post I have ready in the works...about the cutting loose part. The "concert band on the field" effect that's bugging me to no end!!! But I digress for now...

    Thirdly, you don't scare me with your Double High C!! I had Maynard Ferguson come stand RIGHT NEXT TO ME at one of his concerts many moons ago, and drooled on me. I mean, he hit really high notes too!!! Don't get me wrong...that whole drooling thing though...sheesh...get it off me!! GET IT OFF!!!!!!!!!! :lol:

    Thanks dude...and you did catch the part in my review where I think you guys rock REGARDLESS of my tastes, right? :)

    Bye for now...

    No problem Ryan, I like it when things get stired up around here!

    By the way, Benny is good man but unfortunatly like you, he's a baritone. Something about hauling the heavy metal around tends to clog your senses . B)

    I sat 3 feet in front of Arturo Sandovals bell a couple months back. Talk about a face peal!! You need to save the drool stained shirt like Monica Lewinski, could be worth something someday.

    Loud is Good

  6. Fear not, it will be clean and tasteful with just a taste a brass to #### you control freaks off.

    :lol:

    Control freak? I KNEW this was going to happen...oh well.

    That really wasn't MY intent in the review to be a control freak, nor do I think Benny's intent was as well.

    Still loving the Renegades...

    Ryan

    Ryan control freak was not meant for you.

    I really enjoyed your review and understand your point. My comment was more torward the curent state of jr corps where corps are afraid to cut loose with their music anymore. One more time Chuck Corea is one of my favorite tunes because of it's flat out in you face style. Yes, the Renegades show was not written in that style this year and some indescretions are being made. Playing like a violin sucks in my opinion. Renegadesl always do things a little differently than the rest of the crowd other wise we should call ourselves the San Francisco Sheep.

    Keep the reviews coming but beware, I've got a double C ready to hit you between the eyes. :P

  7. The Renegades have built a reputation on higher faster louder. Screaming sops are what brought me to this corps and I personally love the aggression of a high brass sound. This year’s show was not written with that in mind and you have a lot of talent trying to hold back. I have not had to deal with such a change in strategy since the 85 Blue Devils but eventually you find your groove. It's a little like the Renegades recruited a group of quarter horses to run fast and now want them to pull carriages around central park! Fear not, it will be clean and tasteful with just a taste a brass to #### you control freaks off. All I can say is the closing statement is being planned and I would highly suggest that an opportunity should be written for the sops to release that pent up energy!!

  8. It's actually quite scary knowing the calibre of talent.......

    Rob,

    It was a tough pill losing you so late in the season but I understand your situation. Maybe when the kids are a bit older.

    There are a few knowlegable ones in each section of the corps that have been there, done that and know what it takes to be great. You were one of those sparks and I hope your short presence in the line will have a lasting effect. Besides, your replacement is a lot easier to look at than you :huh:

    Have a great summer and stay away from the wine and cheese crowd, it's bad for you Evil image.

  9. I'm not Trying to ba a jerk but,

    Writing a Review of your Own corps like this really makes other corps think less of you!

    One Show. who are you to say you're going to Win the High visual award.

    Dude, relax

    If you know anything about the Renegades you will have noticed that we do self promote, get used to it. Lee could have posted anonomosly as say...."Low Notes" if that would help. And he did not say that we would win visual he said "out-of-nowhere colorguard and Jay Murphy drill have potential to put corps on fast track to high visual at DCA". Funny thing about words like potential, they have meaning.

    Now my own review. I think that our staff has written a difficult and fantastic show that’s a kick to perform. Our performance last night was a rough first time in front on an audience show that I wasn't entirely pleased with. We have a whole lot of cleaning ahead of us but this show has real potential. In the end I hope we are able to entertain you cause that’s what it's all about. I'm looking forward to seeing your corps this year too, who ever that might be.

    Renegade

    An outlaw; a rebel.

    ADJECTIVE: Of, relating to, or resembling a renegade; traitorous.

  10. I'm with Strutta - Yes, Blaringbrass,

    YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    (though not from any copper poisoning....)

    One of the Blue Devil Soloist in 82 "Stymie" came down with a nasty case of what he called "brass poisoning". I think he had a cut on his lip combined with a worn mouthpiece. It took him out of commission for most of the spring. He orginally had the Pegasus solo but couldn't hang on to it(disclaimer-what the #### do I know, I was playing 3rd at the time). The cool part was his dad worked at Atari and was able to get many of our mouthpieces gold plated for free.

    And I agree with Strutta. Your gonna die man!

  11. BD soprano soloist are Legend, Larrie Dastrup being one of my favorites. But my attention goes to the underlooked baritone soloist. Eric Shadine (spelling?) was the baritone in the 83 duet for Everyone Love the Blues. Although a duet, he was the inspiration for the phrasing and the style of that tune.

  12. Moment Of Seperation From The Drum Corps Talkers And Those That Know:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    At the end of the Renegades show, the cymbals make a "7" with their cymbals.  People could be heard throughout the area I was sitting in...."what does 7 mean".  The answers ranged from "don't know" to some mystical power that creates loud notes.  I didn't hear anybody come close to the correct explanation.  Perhaps Lee should stand on the track and toss "ham sandwiches" to the first person that can guess the meaning of "7".
    Ahhhh yes ... but did you also know that Precision West was the Renegade's 7th show of the season, we were the 7th corps to take the field that night, and we we're originally scheduled to go at 7:00PM, but the show got pushed back 7 minutes, and we stepped off at EXACTLY 7:07 pm.
    Really.
    uh-oh.
    p.s. Did I mention that we have 7 bass drums and 7 snares? :)
    Let's not forget that Jeff Helms bought a Lucky 7 Lottery ticket at the 7-11 and won 7 dollars before the show!
  13. Funny, Rich.
    Volume by vote.......
    I'll vote for you as loudest pre-show yeller....AAAAAAAHHHHH!
    Rob
    I throw a vote to Rob Brown but only to prove a point.  Here is a guy with serious drum corps creditials and is responsible for untold deaths by mellophone, Yet with the San Francisco Renegades in his back yard he refuses to march?  What's up with that!  Rob, be sure to sit up front and center for the end of Mambo and we will make you the designated Bi*ch for the Loudest Show on Earth on June 22!  http://www.renegades.org/loudmusic/
    "there is nothing mello about a mellophone"
  14. Sounded like a great day.  Now a little evil promotion advise.  You should have posted these performances before hand.  The Renegades are a bit shy about self promotion, but we force ourselves to put a few words out now and then.  I would have driven up from the bay area to see you (a suck down a few jazz fest brews).  You guy's sounded awsome at Loud Music.  Good luck this year, looking forward to seeing you this summer.
  15. My kanstul 3-valve frenchie was supremely superior to the mello I'm playing on now...... (that shall remain nameless)
    the valve response on this horn I'm playing on now, even after it's been worked on, just sucks compared to that kanstul.
    -Terri (kanstul fan)
    Hey hey.....this is about baritones  :yikes:
    Baritone - sorpano.  The only difference I've seen is that the higher the note you play on a sop the more likely the horn won't release with the rest of the horn line.  Never figured that one out.   (:-D
  16. I still play on a king two valve,and even though the rest of the line has three valve degs(or kanstuls) I wouldnt trade it in for ANYTHING.I wove my horn.LOL
    J :P
    I played a two valve King K-20 in the 80's BD.  Without a doubt the best horn of it's time.  I was lucky to come across one last year after starting the year on tin can Dynasty that somehow forgot that a high E was in the scale.  Athough I now play a Kanstul my heart is with my King.  That very horn is making an appearance with the Renegades minicorps in Boston this weekend without me!  I had to work so it went on loan, I hope it has a good time.
  17. I'd have to say Jack Mehan with the early 80's Blue Devils.  In 82 he created one of the most awsome and internally cohesive soprano lines I have ever been a part of, and I've been in a few.  He was instrumental in my early education and giving me the opportunity to advance in the BD organization.
    Wayne Downey,  Awsome leadership and fantastic arrangements.  He's also gone up in my estimation as you know who doesnt like him very much.
    Chris Nalls.  Current Renegade guru.  One of the guy's but still has the leadership and creativity to make a great corps.  Purveyor of loud, inventor of the Infinitrill, keep up the good work.  Were gonna be f@#$ing famous!!
  18. I agree, dutting sucks.  If it was that hard to stay together then maybe the hornlines should bop the whole show.  It's the silence between phrases that makes the music, dont screw it up with dutting snare lines and dropping riffles:)
