  1. I though we knew well enough by now that if you want get any meaning from scores, that the individual number means nothing. It's the spread between numbers that's more significant.

I meant to click the +1 for this, but honestly my thumb slipped!

This is the truth! The number of one corps' score means next to nothing! It's all about how one corps performance relates to the corps before and after it, therefore, the spreads are the key. Any caption scores within 0.3 of each other is a virtual tie. That means that the judge recognizes that if they were perhaps standing at a different spot on the field - or if the corps lined up and performed again - they could have flipped placements in that judge's caption.

If you look at the finals caption scores last year for brass

    Blue Devils:.19.80

    Cavaliers:....19.40

    Bluecoats:...19.30

    Crown:.......19.20

    Cadets:.......19.10

There is an obvious gap of 0.4 between the Cavaliers and BD, showing that the judge believed there to be an obvious gap in the brass performance between the two groups. Between the Cavaliers and the next three corps, there is only a 0.1 point difference between each of them! That judge is telling us through scores that they believed them to be so very close that if they were to line up again, there could have been a change in their opinion of placements.

All of these scores are good! But the numbers don't matter. The space between is where the true information lies.

  2. Thats because Crown doesn't have the tradition that other corps have. They're still the new kids on the block and in my opinion, have huge egos for a corps that hasn't even come close to winning yet.

Second is close. You could have just said "a corps that hasn't won yet." Thats kind of a punk move to say that.

Though I have to say that I agree that they are a relatively new corps. That is a quantifiable fact. (roughly) 20 years is a lot less than 76 years.

And egos aren't bad unless they go unchecked. I haven't personally had any terrible experiences with anyone affiliated with Crown, so I can't say that I know about any "huge egos' they may or may not have.

  3. I know that the gold horns last year were hardly a coincidence, but yes, I honestly believe that entertaining the audience is a very very high priority. I know someone fairly high up in the organization and every year that I ask him about the summer production, he tells me how much he thinks the fans will love it before anything else. I don't doubt that Crown would love to win a championship, but I just don't think that it's the first thing they think about when designing a show. Just my opinion, though. I could be wrong.

I think that both winning and entertaining the audience come into play for everyone. Though, I don't believe that anyone actually thinks "how can we make this boring?" when they're designing a show. It's just that some have different ideas of "exciting" than others. The designers and staff at Crown certainly know how to make things exciting for the people in the stands.

  4. Well, Crown certainly came out strong last year. They had their own little undefeated streak going on until Akron (I think). Of course, the Blue Devils were far, far away.

And the Cavaliers didn't start too hot this past year, but that didn't stop them from ending in 2nd.

  5. A good way to understand the term “accessible” (at least how I believe it's being bandied about on these boards) might be to imagine a conversation of a DC design team laying out the first run through:

Designer #1: “OK, here’s where we visually state the confusion and depression of the musical moment……atonal effects and a dark departure reflected in the dissonance, then….”

Designer #2: “Wait a frickin’ minute….we can’t put that artsy crap in here….no one’s gonna understand it, it’s far too dark and inaccessible! You know these DCI crowds! They have the attention span of a kangaroo rat and musical range of a juice harp!”

Designer #1: “Accessible? You mean like 4/4 time? Look…I’m trying to create a mood here that shows the highs & lows of musical & visual emotion; deep fractures, then beautiful resolve, so……”

Designer #2: “Oh, please! Spare me the Philip Glass interprets Mahler bit….have you looked at the stands lately? That thousand yard stare?….it’s confused brain cells colliding like bumper cars! We need to do the familiar… long phases so their brains can imprint and process the sound!”

    Designer #1: “I quit!”

Designer #2: “Fine, don’t let the door hit you in the ###!” “Now, where was I? Oh, yes…. company front and simple gifts!”

    hahaha awesome.

Way to make a point in a new, fun and interesting way.

  6. If finals were a week later….the heat wave would’ve passed and the dome could have been opened for quarters and beautiful music would have gushed out into the high heavens where is would have reached a plane full of UN delegates who would have been so inspired….that by now we’d have world peace, ended hunger and drum corps would be bigger than Football (American and European combined) and all the DCI corps, marchers and staff would be treated like royalty, given gobs of cash, private islands, reality TV shows and live happily ever after…

If you’re going to dream, dream big !

If only! Life would be perfect.

  7. Stadium lights!!

Not sure they still do this at Regiment, but that was it for us.

It's funny to see all the people mentioning sleeping or napping on the bus on the way to a show. In the majority of the corps I marched with, sleeping on the way to competition was very much not allowed. The reasoning was that they were worried you'd wake up groggy and not be at your best. Not saying either way is right or wrong, just found it to be an interesting contrast.

That's certainly a good reason to not take naps, but I think it just comes down to the individual and how their body acts after sleep. I think it's everyone's responsibility to do all they can to be ready for the show. For some that is taking a nap. For others, it's staying wide awake.

    Whatever works!

P.S. I think our guard wasn't allowed to take naps on the way to shows for a little while because of a few of them being groggy once... or something like that. I don't really remember.

Seven a.m., Hop and Cadets waking up in the morning

Gotta be fresh, gotta get to the food truck.

Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal

Seein' everything, the time is goin'

Tickin' on and on, everybody's rushin'

Gotta get down to the bus for the show

Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends. . .

 Its awesome that america is making fun of that video at every chance it gets. Even DCP!

    love it.

  9. 1. Academy: Little Fugue(Bach) + Lux Aurumque(Whitacre) + Lollapalooza(John Adams) = Potential top 12 show

    2. Blue Devils: I'm friends with a tech over there and he has been telling me that their show this year will be entertaining to everyone and that people won't walk out on their performances this year...

    3. Phantom Regiment: Elsa's Procession to the Cathedrial(Wagner) is one of my favorite pieces.

Has this really happened? ...yikes. I wouldn't want anyone to get up and leave while I perform, so I won't be doing that to anyone else (unless something more important than drum corps is going on and I have a good reason to leave).

  10. I have a few songs that get stuck in my head from time to time.

You know those times your not thinking of much, and BAM, the Sop rip from 1989 Phantom starts playing in your head and you can't stop it.

    The 2 I've had lately are;

1989 Blue Devil opener - that ferocious horn line

2010 Bluecoats opener - just a wall of sound

    What are yours...

You beat me to it! That is one of my favorite movements I've ever performed.
